Whitney covers Stevie

According to NicksLive, Whitney Houston recorded HAEWAFY and may include it on her new CD, which drops in September. Here's hoping it's on the CD!

strandinthewind 07-14-2009 09:10 PM

If this is true, that would be incredible. In fact, what it would do is put a lesser known Stevie Nicks song on what has the potential to be the comeback record of the decade - with sales well over 5 million in the US alone. Moreover, if it became a single, it would be huge for La Nicks. I mean, she made several million dollars (allegedly 5) on the Dixie Chicks' Landslide alone. And, this is Whitney Houston. Finally, much like WH's cover of Dolly's also much more beautiful original (I Will Always Love You) - WH could do Stevie's song justice as this is right up her ally of shining like the sun on beautiful ballads.

This HAS to either be on the record or be leaked!

Easy Christmas money.

I know -I remember the Smashing Pumpkins bitched about how costly it was for them to obtain the right to cover Landslide and La Nicks said something like the fee paid to re do her pool in Phoenix (or something like that).

Dodfather 07-15-2009 03:13 AM

Sorry. I hate to be a dissenter but if this is true I dread it. I really don't like her version of I Will Always Love You and if she brings the same histrionics to Has ASnyone Ever Written Anything For You it will ruin the song. She might not though and it might be great, but I'll be uneasy about it until I hear it.

Sanne2 07-15-2009 03:24 AM

I used to be a HUGE Whitney Houstin fan so I think this is great! However, I'm not sure this new album is going to be the amazing comeback that most people want it to be, her voice just isn't the same anymore, damaged by "habits". Anyway, I'm curious to hear what her version will sound like and bring in the cash for Stevie!

wildheart048 07-15-2009 05:07 AM

IF she does it well, this will be amazing...Whitney has a fantastic voice, and it could be an IWALY type smash...HAEWAFY certainly has the potential to be that...it will never make me forget Stevie's own version(s), just like no one can sing IWALY like Dolly can...but I still see it as a good thing...

HejiraNYC 07-15-2009 07:50 AM

If this is true, it would definitely be huge for Stevie, even if it never gets released as a single. I could definitely imagine Whitney injecting a gospel-y call-and-response motif into the song, especially during the bridge, where she could sell the "if not for me, then do it for the world" line for all it's worth. If nothing else, I think this would establish that Stevie (along with umpteen co-writers) can write timeless, universally appealing songs.

That being said... I also do not think Whitney's "comeback" album is going to be the force of nature that everyone is painting it out to be. The world is a much different place today than it was ten years ago when Whitney had her last hit. She's middle aged. Her bad behavior is legend. Her voice may not have withstood the ravages of abuse and neglect. Adult contemporary power ballads are no longer charting, e.g., Celine. But more than anything, the recording industry is collectively in the crapper, and anything that manages to move even 500,000 copies today would be considered a major hit.

I think I would feel more confident if Whitney's comeback was being presided by someone more relevant- like Akon or even Jay-zee. But Clive Davis? N*****, puhlease.

Whitney singing

Love to hear this. I am a fan of I will always love you, I, I think Whitney will do a good cover of HAEWAFY. The ballads really show off her beautiful voice.

I heard about 17 songs on the version of the CD that I heard in May. I did not see "song titles" or "credits." The number 1 song is written by Stevie Nicks called "Has Anybody Ever Written Anything For You" ---ballad cover, but my date said it may not make the CD. (For the record I love this song made famous by Stevie Nicks-DS)
http://dereksheldon.blogspot.com/200...ou-leaked.html

I guess it didn't make the final cut, I found this tracklisting of the leaked version:
Quote:

01 - I Look To You - Born Again
02 - I Look To You - Nothing But Love
03 - I Look To You - If You Really Cared
04 - I Look To You - I Look To You
05 - I Look To You - Open Your Eyes
06 - I Look To You - Never Give In
07 - I Look To You - No More Tears
08 - I Look To You - Truth Hurts
09 - I Look To You - When You're Like This
10 - I Look To You - Teach You A Thing Or Two
11 - I Look To You - True To Me
12 - I Look To You - The Force Of A Woman
13 - I Look To You - Naughty Sexy Licious'
14 - I Look To You - When Where Who?

i would love to hear the version of that song.

Not sure I'd trust that listing....

This is from today's Billboard. Whitney and Clive were in London last night for a listening party... 9 tracks played (not Stevie's song). Unless the titles have been changed, only two of the 9 played match your list - not even the possible lead single is there..

Billboard

Davis - who worked with Houston for the first time in 10 years on the album - stressed the album is "by no means done," while many of the songs played were still in unfinished form.

"We didn't try to fit Whitney Houston into the market," Davis said. "The copyrights associated with Whitney in the 1980s and '90s are part of the fabric of music today."

Nonetheless, collaborators on the album read like a who's who of contemporary pop/R&B, with songwriters and producers including Alicia Keys, Diane Warren, Stargate, R Kelly and Akon, who duets with Houston on "Like I Never Left."

The tracks played were "Million Dollar Bill," "Nuthin' But Love," "Call You Tonight" (which Davis said was a likely lead single), "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," "Like I Never Left," "For the Lovers," "I Look to You," "Worth It" and a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You."

The overall feel of the album was notably contemporary, while retaining Houston's trademark vocal flourishes. The up-tempo songs "Nuthin' But Love" and "A Song for You" received the best reaction from the invited audience of international media, while Davis particularly praised slower songs like the Warren-penned ballad "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" and R Kelly's title track, hailing Houston as "the premium balladeer of our time."

JazmenFlowers 07-15-2009 11:47 AM

this is exciting. I agree that I don't think this album will be what a lot of people are anticipating, but I still love Whitney's voice and I hope she recovers from the past few years' turmoil. if HAEWAFY doesn't make the cut, hopefully it will be leaked.

I totally agree with everything you said..especially about the nature of Ms. Houston's "comeback". I hope her new record does well but there are many factors in 2009 to deal with, many of which you mentioned. But the prospect of her doing HAEWAFY is very exciting!!! Hope it comes true. I remember when I Will Always Love You came out and everyone said it was a Dolly Parton song and I had never heard of it. I can see the same reaction occuring with Stevie's song.

David 07-15-2009 12:14 PM

I hope she sings it! I hope she sings it! Yippeeee!!!

GoldDustOrphan 07-15-2009 12:37 PM

Two tracks have already leaked: Like I Never Left, a terribly dull "duet" with Akon, and I Never Knew My Own Strength, which is an old school Whitney ballad (minus the vocal show-boating).

petep9000 07-15-2009 04:16 PM

The 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength' song is showing signs of a lot of vocal change in Whitney. She sounds scratchy, raspy, out of breath and not in top-form. We'll see how the rest of the album sounds. It didn't make me feel very excited.

belladonnadream 07-15-2009 05:13 PM

Hmmm... this would be interesting to hear!

gypsy4life 07-15-2009 06:27 PM

..I'm glad Whitney is doing better...she looked SO bad for a long time. I usually CANT stand Stevie covers, but, it'll be worth a listen..

strandinthewind 07-15-2009 06:56 PM

This site http://www.singersroom.com/news/3191...arrett-R-Kelly indicates:

My friend send me this tracklist.....Tha`ts true? 01 - I Didn't Know My Own Strength - Produced By David Foster 02 - Can`t Help Who You Love - Produced By Akon & Giorgio Tuinfort 03 - I Look To You - Produced By R. This site has it as a possible track list as well http://whitney-fan.com/forums/index....st=75&start=75 - but I think it is just quoting the one above.

Time will tell.

But, Dave Foster is interesting in that I think La Nicks very recently - and likely around the time this track was in production for WH - talked about wanting to work with Dave Foster

darla 07-15-2009 07:57 PM

I so hope this is true. Yes this song will have a new life of its own, just like Whitney
did with Dolly partons. And it will showcase Stevie again as a wonderful songwriter.
I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Darla

A Song For You? Oh, God, no! I love that song and the only cover that does it justice (which in fact is just as great as the original) is the fantastic version by the Carpenters. I have a feeling Whitney might oversing this and just make it really loud...no!

Black_Moon 07-16-2009 04:24 PM

There's a part of me that is thrilled someone as famous as Whitney Houston is choosing to cover "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You", because of course if this album does well it could bring Stevie a wider fanbase. However, knowing Whitney Houston's tendency to have big, over the top ballads where she shows off her vocal technique (and similar to Mariah Carey, can have a tendency to take away some of the emotion from the song because of this) I've a feeling that she may over-dramaticise the song.

Phew, and there's my first post over with!

:wavey: Glad to hear from you Back Moon!!

I have a strong dislike for Whitney as imo, she is very snotty and overrated. However, she really did a wonderful job with Dolly's --I will Always love you. So I am hoping she finds a way to get HAWFYL out on the air waves and get some more eyebrows raised for Stevie's sake. I think she can do it.

While HAEWFY is not one of my favorite Stevie compositions (I think the fit of the lyrics and melody is a bit awkward), this may be one that could work well interpreted by an artist like Whitney. If she can control the temptation to oversing, a "soul diva" interpretation could be interesting.

Of course, a lot will depend on the state of Whitney's voice. I fear that too much vocal damage may have been done. I think we can expect all the new Whitney tracks to be auto-tuned within an inch of their life.

I hadn't heard her recent voice, but out of interest at you and a couple of others in this thread mentioning the state of her singing, I YouTubed it. Yeah, I can't believe that this is the same woman who sang on "The Bodyguard" seventeen years ago. I know I have to allow for ageing and things, but wow.

SpyNote 07-16-2009 09:06 PM

It sounds like a song she might cover. I can hear her knocking the hell out of the bridge (Do it forrrrrrrrrrrr the world!). I hope it happens. It would be nice to hear a cover that isn't Landslide or Dreams or Stand Back.

Phoenix 07-16-2009 09:31 PM

I like Whitney Huston alot. but i would HATE IT. Im still trying to explain to people that Landslide wasnt written by the dixie chicks OR the smashing pumkins.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: THe good that would come of it is that stevie would make TONS of money off it Enough so that she would stop touring (where the money is) for ten minutes and do something new.

GoldDustOrphan 07-20-2009 08:30 PM

Today, the track-list was officially announced on Houston's website, www. whitneyhouston.com

I Look To You (available Sept. 1)

1. Million Dollar Bill
2. Nothin' But Love
3. Call You Tonight
4. I Look To You
5. Like I Never Left (feat. Akon)
6. A Song For You
7. I Didn't Know My Own Strength
8. Worth It
9. For The Lovers
10. I Got You
11. Salute

She did record HAEWAFY with producer David Foster, who also produced I Didn't Know My Own Strength. There were other songs that didn't make the final edit, but I expect the usual iTunes pre-order bonus track or deluxe digital edition bonus tracks, major retailer bonus tracks and bonus cuts on CD singles. International versions will have one or two non-U.S. tracks (usually Japan and UK).

Daughtry's new CD features 12 tracks, but seven more tracks available as various bonuses, deluxe ed., website exclusives, etc. That's pretty considerable.

Black_Moon 07-20-2009 08:37 PM

^^

It'll probably get leaked anyway. I'm apprenhensive of it when it surfaces - I don't know how good a job Whitney will have done. But, you can't deny that the exposure Stevie would have got for that particular song (never a single, pretty unknown outside of fans) if it had been on the album.

It actually was a single but not a big hit. Reached #60 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #31 on the Adult Contemporary Charts.

I distinctly remember wanting to buy this single because it was like 30 seconds longer than the album version! Of course, now I realize all it was just a little bit of extended synth-y goodness tacked on at the end.
