Let's talk about.......STORMS.....

I'm really enjoying these threads and hope you are too! I thought I'd stick with the tusk theme again....not sure where we'll go from here....

Anyways...STORMS...
* It was absolutely magical to here it live during the Unleased Tour! I loved it!!!

*I do (finally) think this one is mostly about Mick, their secret affair, and their breakup.
"every night that goes between, I feel a little less......."
"I should have known from the first, that I'd be the broken hearted...."

The thought of Stevie & Mick gives me an awful mental picture. What was she thinking??? And I've read before that she considers him one of her great loves. Could you imagine how Lindsey felt when he found out?

So all & all.....a "storm" is another way to describe our girl....which seems fitting in the romance department.....

What do you think??

FMlex 07-14-2009 08:25 PM

(She also recently said that Joe Walsh was her "great love"... hmm I don't think I buy that.)

Anywho, love love love Storms! I was glad that everyone was able to hear it live for the first time on this tour. Sounds like Stevie had fun with it - judging from video/audio of the tour thus far, she's been changing it up and stuff.

"But in those years and the lifetimes past
I did not deal with the road
And I did not deal with you I know
Though the love has always been"

Powerful stuff.

I have always been a storm. Stevie has always been a storm. She never is stable. She kind of thrives on sadness and heartache, I think. Not that that's a bad thing. After all, she writes some damn good songs when she's going through a rough time.

I am loving talking about all these songs!

Storms

Storms is transcendent, I don't believe it's about Mick, even if it is,lol, I think it's about King David and she is his wife, the lifetimes past. However, this has never been documented and (probably never will be,Big LOL)Still,Who knows better than Stevie?

Hmmm. Then, this song should have a lot of meaning for Mark Sanford.

I do believe the every night that goes between part is Mick. And If You Ever Did Believe too (as Sheryl Crow has confirmed). The knowing from the start that she'd be brokenhearted sounds like Mick, in that she probably knew when the romance commenced that it could never last, was ill-fated.

But not dealing with something though the love has always been sounds like Lindsey as does the "not all the prayers in the world would save us." This gets old, but I really think it's about all of them. As she says on tour now, stormy people, stormy problems, stormy relationships. I don't think it's about one couple.

We were frail could mean her and Mick giving into temptation, even though she knew it would hurt Jenny and the children.

However, not all the prayers in the world could save us sounds like Lindsey again. I mean, did she ever really think that hers and Mick's was a forever love? Did she really struggle to make it work? I don't even think they were monogamous between his relationships and his saying she was with Paul. So, I don't think she was praying that it would work.

On the other hand, I think there was a lot of fraying and patching of Lindsey and Stevie's relationship since before they ever met FM. Trying so hard to keep them together, even through the White album, but ultimately they were doomed. With fame, money, drugs and attractive rockers all around, the center could not hold. The "not all the prayers in the world" makes me think BN.

While I believe that Beautiful Child and Beauty and the Beast are completely about Mick, I think Storms is probably half Mick and half Lindsey. Kind of the same thing as Sara...where it's about multiple things that were going on at the time.

Powerful stuff.

I lost some very important people when I was in high school...to circumstance, time, space, etc. Storms...especially those lines, really helped me make peace with the situation.

equeen102289 07-15-2009 03:34 PM

In an interview with Jim Ladd from 2005 Stevie said Storms was about Mick.

Storms is another one of the Tusk songs that I just love. If I'm really sad or in a crappy mood it's the song I like to play on repeat.

I never thought I'd get to hear it live, and after I did, I realized I wasn't really missing anything. Now if she would have sung it on the Tusk tour, I might feel differently about it.

This I did not know...hmmm

It took me a while to get into Storms actually, but now I love it. I often find that with the best songs or albums you have to work at them and then all of a sudden it just hits you how great they are and it's totally worth it.

I think it's about Stevie's relationships with men in general, and also a great bit of self-reflection on her part.

BellaDonna 07-16-2009 04:55 PM

I have loved this song since the first time I ever heard it. I am SO glad they are doing it on this tour. I loved hearing it live. :] It was awesome. It has really deep meaning and I love the words. Very cool song. One of my favorites.

For anyone who hasn't heard the unreleased/unmastered version of Storms, please download and listen.
The last 45 seconds or so are awesome! Intense. I love the two Stevie voices going on at the same time.

Storms has never meant a lot to me (yet----sooner or later Stevie's poetry does soak in) , however, it means everything to a few Stevie fan friends I've made and that is what makes it special to me.

I think Stevie was writing about Mick/Lindsey/and relationships she had in general.
Being a rocker chic in the 60's-70's had to have made her emotional. She had to push twice as hard to be respected. Once she got some respect , she probably was confused on which direction and whose direction she would take it from. just a thought,.,

Ghost_Tracker 07-16-2009 05:53 PM

Storms. Hmmm. How to describe Storms... ???

Most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Black_Moon 07-16-2009 06:18 PM

It took me a while to really appreciate "Storms". I'd always listen to it and think, 'Yeah, really beautiful song' but then skip it whenever it came on. One day it hit me, which I think often happens with Stevie's songs, and now I consider it one of my utmost favourite songs she's ever wrote.

She said,
"Everynight he will break your heart"

I think this part is about Mick, and someone who Stevie held in high regard - Robin? Even Sara Recor? - warning Stevie off the affair. Obviously, it wasn't going to end well with him being married and things. Generally, when Stevie says "she" in a song, I think she's talking about herself but I think in this case it's someone else speaking.

Two Stevies are definitely better than one!

Since my first listen to Tusk, Storms has been my favorite Stevie song. I love how a song called Storms can be so vulnerable.

Did I ever really care that much? Girl, preach.

I think it's the lines at the end that really connect me to this song. The feeling you have when a relationship ends, or you lose someone...and you feel so stupid for believing it could never happen...that things would all work out...when it was right in front of you the whole time.

I guess that's the theme of the whole song, in a way.

I agree, and reflection like someone said earlier. Stevie reflecting on the endings of all of her relationships, how they left her broken hearted. Unsurprising, as I think Stevie seems to be a more of a "think with your heart, not your head" kind of person, particularly in romance.

GypsyBlueEyes 07-16-2009 09:33 PM

I always felt that Storms was mostly about the ending of Stevie's relationship with Mick, but I think she used lines that refer to her relationship with Lindsey to draw similarities to what happened with Mick:

(lol..and don't laugh...this is just for the sake of conversation...just for fun...dime store psychology at its best )

The whole beginning of the song is about Mick up until:

I haven't felt this way I feel
Since many a year ago
But in those years and the lifetimes past
I did not deal with the road

Maybe she is saying that what she was feeling about Mick she hadn't felt since her relationship with Lindsey had ended. True or not, the reason I thought this was because I haven't ever believed that Stevie and Lindsey have ever had any kind of closure between them (no matter what they may say at any given time :p )...I think she is saying that she didn't handle the Lindsey situation in a way that gave her any closure.

And I did not deal with you I know
Though the love has always been

Then turned around and did the same thing with Mick even though she loved him...

So I search to find an answer there
So I can truly win

Perhaps she was saying that she was using what happened in her past with Lindsey to figure out what she should/shouldn't do in regards to the end of her relationship with Mick...she wants to bring closure to the relationship with Mick in a way she hadn't been able to with Lindsey

So I try to say
Goodbye my friend
I'd like to leave you with something warm

Maybe she is saying that she made a real effort to gain closure with Mick instead of ignoring the situation the way she had with Lindsey

But never have I been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm

But ultimately she couldn't break the cycle...and therefore didn't get the closure she was hoping for

We were frail
She said
Everynight he will break your heart
I should have known from the first
Id be the broken hearted
But I loved you from the start
Save us...
And not all the prayers in the world -- could save us

Maybe that part is her telling herself that she won't ever get the closure she wants and that she should have known it would end up that way...that she would get her heart broken...but she took a chance with him anyway because she loved him...even though they were doomed from the start and there wasn't anything that could have saved the relationship.

Wow...sorry guys, that really turned out much longer than I had intended

daniellaaarisen 07-17-2009 02:02 AM

I'm not gonna lie. I think that a vast majority of Stevie's love-related songs relate to Lindsey AND I don't say that just because I'm a huge shipper (to my own disgrace, of course).

I think that if you look at her lyrics closely, they always come down to a "love that's always been". I don't necessarily think Stevie's songs are always written with that intent, but I think she compares each one of her romantic "intanglements" to their relationship. In the end, if you date Stevie, you're fighting Lindsey Buckingham and his total appeal to her, despite the hatred that has bounced back and forth for so long.

I'll write more about "Storms" when I have time (its midnight in a hotel lobby). But yeah, its one of those songs that stuck to my bones during the hardest time of my life (much like "Love Is" and "Beautiful Child").
