Stevie Backstage Video - 1983

So we've all seen the songs from this concert, but I had never seen this backstage part before. I thought it was pretty funny, so I'd thought I'd show others who haven't seen it:

Stevie and her stuffed animals...!

I believe the concert was in 1981 - for Bella Donna.

I also love her Lucy Ricardoesq humor about the gifts.

Finally, that intro. ballad form of Rhiannon is out of this world!

Macfanforever 07-02-2009 02:58 PM

This is a classic from 1981 HBO special wich aired in april 1982.
yes i do remember the guy yelling, hey mother bleeper in it.I remember my localPBS station back in the late 80's or the early 90's aired this HBO version with the backstage footage intacked with the cursing.I was shocked hearing it on the same channel as big bird is on.

Such a beautiful performance of "Rhiannon" - so much emotion.
And then the tears at the end... so sad yet so lovely.

yes, I think its Waddy yelling that but then what does Stevie say in response? I"ve never been able to make it out, after watching it for all these years.

petep9000 07-02-2009 08:24 PM

I hear her say something like "wuaaaahhhhhh?" and then possibly "whu'd yew say boy?"

I'm fascinated by the makeup artist, how can she expect to do Stevie's makeup if Stevie doesn't stop moving? Stevie could lose an eye! Also, Lori puts on a cloak, but one of the mistresses has a blue one for Sharon which terribly nervous 1981 Sharon seems to have forgotten and I guess it was too late to try to catch her. You can hear them call for her "Sharon......"

She got a lot of goodies. It must have been fun back then when she would pick up the gifts herself and carry the mountain back to the dressing area.

great videos .thanks.

the live video of rhiannon seems really sad though, she is crying at the end and seems very different from alot of the rhiannon videos I have seen.

I remember her saying she didnt really get to enjoy bella donnas success much because of her friends death from leukemia[ robin{robyn?] anderson .

would this video have been from the same time as her friends illness?

Yup. Apparently, Robin died the day that Bella Donna hit #1 on the charts.

I really, really want this on DVD... anyone know if its still available? That clip is hilarious, and I've always adored that version of "Rhiannon". That song is at its best when she's completely coked out/insane (Rosebud), haunting and full of mourning (this version) or somewhat reserved but shaking with passion towards the end (The Dance).

I wish she still sang it like in The Dance. It may not be like in the early days, but at least you can feel it and see her feeling it, too.

I love stuff like this!!! She reminds me of how I get when I'm nervous and antsy before doing something like that- just talks and talks!!!

I would love to see some footage like this from Unleashed, that would be cool!

strandinthewind 07-03-2009 08:50 AM

I think it is more likely that the main reason she is appears sad and weepy is that it is the last night of her first solo tour, which is why she exclaims "I'll never forget you either" apparently in response an audience members shouted statement. But, certainly RA could have been part of it as she did die in that general timeframe or she was very sick and would soon die.

It also is interesting that five or so minutes before this, she was laughing and joking backstage. So, it appears it was something she thought of while singing the song.

Alright, now I get it! That was another element in the backstage footage that I never quite understood, that whole Lori cloak confusion. For some reason, I find it very alluring when the girls don extra layers for a song or two. I think probably the last time they did this was for Rooms on Fire during the Mirror tour. I just think its really cool!

Stevie has said in print interviews and the Rhiannon print in her own handwriting that she learned of Robin's illness on the same day she found out that Bella was going to #1. I can't recall the exact time of Robin's death.
Also, funny anecdote in Danny Goldberg's book about how Bella became #1.

That's right. I remember Mick talking about seeing her at the US Festival and how frail she looked.
