NBC Los Angeles:
http://www.nbclosangeles.com/around_...n-the-Mac.html Macking on the Mac, May 27, 2009 By ALYSIA GRAY PAINTER Though it may be tempting to write "The Mac is Back!" when referring to 1) Fleetwood Mac coming to town for a concert or 2) the band having another mega-hit, we shall not. Not that we don't like the rhyming-ness of it, but because we're sure many other people have tread those same waters before us. But, we would be wrong to not acknowledge the iconic band's Los Angeles date. They're playing Staples Center on Thursday, May 28, which has us thinking of all the super things about this supergroup. 1) The way Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham would sing "Go Your Own Way" to each other on stage. Oh boy. Talk about hot-hot backstory. 2) Stevie's amazing, witchy, mystical clothing choices. The lady swirls. Nobody has been able to swirl like her, before or since. Oh, and those platform boots from her solo "Stand Back" era. No matter that we couldn't possibly stand in them, much less stand back, but we did covet them so. 3) That Mick Fleetwood and John McVie both play on Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London," the lycanthropiest rock song of all time. 4) "Songbird," the final song on side one of "Rumors," is just so, so sweet. A tear jerker, that one. Kudos to Ms. Christine McVie. 5) That the USC marching band appears in the "Tusk" video. Definitely an early forebearer of marching-band chic. |

Staples Center Show
Was off the hook. I know it's been said that Stevie has looked lethargic on this tour but not tonight. She was full of pep and singing better then ever. Lindsey was getting off and the whole band sounded tight as hell. And believe it or not, the L.A. crowd was into it.
Didn't buy any shirts, they were pretty pricey but got a poster with the L.A. date printed on it. Great night. Worth the 30yrs I've been waiting to see them. |
Definitely the best of the three shows I've seen this tour!!!
|
Show was great. I think I liked the Anaheim show best, but that could be just because it was the first time I'd seen them in awhile.
Saw a couple of luminaries in the audience: Kelsey Grammar and our own Carlos Rios! For Gypsy, Stevie said that they lunched with Santana and that the whole San Francisco scene was just as electric as you can imagine and just as romantic as you can imagine. She then said, "I'm back to the floor that I loved, Lindsey's and my bed." While, she's being so pointed with that one, she might as well grab Lindsey and give us a re-enactment, right on the spot. For Big Love, Lindsey dedicated it to Kristen, Will, Lee Lee and Stella and said they were all in the office. He said the meaning of the song is now merely an echo of what it had once been. It used to be about alienation and now it's a testament to the power of change. Stevie dedicated Landslide to "My brother Christopher who is being very, very brave." After the book signing one of you reported that Chris was diagnosed with cancer, so Stevie was referring to that. At the song's end, after she and Lindsey played their "snow covered hill" game, she clasped her hands and bowed in his direction. At the end of GDW when Stevie turns her back to the audience to form her silhouette, Mick points his drumstick at her, his eyes wide and bulging. Stevie moves in time with his stick. She jerks each time he points. He's her puppeteer and she doesn't freeze until he does. There's no problem with the digital voices during World Turning this time. Lindsey's voice is heard for the "get back on the ground" part and Stevie's voice isn't forming any words. You just hear her "Ahhhhh" over and over again. When the real, Lindsey and Stevie return to the stage, they just stand there in front of Mick and watch his drum solo continue, staring as if mesmerized, as Mick drumming gathers speed. Becoming his audience and increasing our focus on him through theirs. This is new and is not how they performed it at the last two shows I saw. Lindsey waits long moments after the song ends, panting and catching his breath before announcing, "Miiiiiick Fleeeeeetwood." When he rises to present the band to us, Mick mutters that he will get slim, even if it kills him and he slumps over, before saying he's just kidding. When Mick introduces the band, he points out that Brett plays both lead guitar and rhythm guitar, concluding, "ooh, Lindsey is threatened." Lindsey adopts a scandalized expression in response. Mick says that the guys are on their best behavior around Stevie, because she knows all of their secrets. Stevie walks up to John and gives him a menacing look, indicating that she will tell all, if put to the test. The show really seemed to go fast tonight. I couldn't believe we were already at the end. Outside, I got a couple of pictures of those tambourines, since someone had asked to see them. Here they are. I'll post the band pictures below. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...Staples076.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...Staples077.jpg Michele |

David, I don't know if I would say it was her best vocal performance of all time, but from the videos I've seen of the current tour, I would say it seemed to be the best. Her voice sounded great, the wail on "Gold Dust Woman" was awesome, she held a few notes that she hadn't been holding. She just seemed on her "A" game last night. And she seemed really happy and into the show. Best of all time? Maybe not, but I would list it as pretty close.

May 29th, 2009 Lindsey Buckingham takes spotlight on Fleetwood Mac tour If the name had not already been taken, Fleetwood Mac might be more accurately known as the Buckinghams. Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, dubbed the veteran rock band’s “mentor” and “maestro” by drummer and co-founder Mick Fleetwood, poured on the highlights during the Mac’s 2-1/2-hour concert at the Staples Center on Thursday. Clearly invigorated by his tour last year to promote his latest solo album, Buckingham wowed the 18,000-strong boomer crowd with flashy, pick-free guitar work on such tunes as “Go Insane,” “I’m So Afraid” and “Big Love,” which he dedicated to his wife and young children in the audience. Co-conspirator Stevie Nicks was off stage for the latter two songs, but she won over fans with her gravel-voiced take on “Gold Dust Woman” and show closer “Silver Springs.” Perhaps the loudest roar was reserved for her synth-laden solo tune “Stand Back.” Not all of Buckingham’s tunes worked. The brassy climax of “Tusk” could have benefited from a guest spot by the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band, who performed on the original recording and are based down the road from the venue. Instead, some deft playing by a touring keyboardist had to suffice. Singer/keyboardist Christine McVie was also sorely missed. The writer of such tunes as “You Make Loving Fun” and “Little Lies” retired to her English country estate a decade ago to focus on her culinary passions. But that did not prevent Buckingham and Nicks from trading verses on two of her best-known songs “Don’t Stop” and “Say You Love Me.” Fleetwood Mac are touring without a new album — “yet,” Buckingham told the crowd. The idea is to “just go out and have fun,” he said. But for the first half of the show, Buckingham, Nicks, Fleetwood and bass player John McVie barely acknowledged each other, firmly keeping to their designated areas of the simple stage. However Nicks embraced Buckingham after she finished singing “Sara,” and other bonding moments soon occurred. By the end, it looked like a major love-fest among the various ex-lovers and combatants. The souvenir stands did a roaring trade in $40 tambourines (what recession?), though this led to a lot of unnecessary accompaniment during the show. Mick Fleetwood wigs might be a better choice on the next tour. |
