Demo of Trouble In Shangri-La That I Have Never Heard!

I was on youtube and ran into this acoustic demo of TISL, and I thought I'd share it with you all!

Enjoy!!!!

Wow, thanks for calling this to our attention! I must admit I have not heard this particular demo before, which is much better than the rather "lumbering" electric guitar demo that I've heard. And that's even though she wimps out on the "dawn of separation" note. :p Especially loving the vamping at the end... such a rarity from her in the modern era. :distress:

Thanks for sharing this! I never heard this before:thumbsup:
I like how raw it is

Very interesting! I like it! It's cool to have an acoustic counterpoint to the more digital/synthesized TISL. I must say I especially love the soul and passion in her vocal  .

Amen -- In fact, I think the obvious (to me) use of the vocal manipulator (pro tools?) on TISL in many ways ruined her otherwise very good vocals - the difference on the demos is stunning to me. I will say this though - her album but of It's Only Love was pretty stellar.

Who's singing background with her? Lori, Sharon?

Here's the Demo. It's been out there for awhile, not sure where I got it... but yeah I like it better then the other demo too.

WOW I had never heard that version. Trouble in Shangri La the song is Stevie's best solo song ever next to Edge of 17 but I always thought it was all but impossible for her to do it live. This accoustic version could've been done. I love the show me the way back to shangri la part. Stevie should've done like Neil Young in Tonight's the Night and opened and closed the album with two different versions of TISL with this longer accoustice version at the end.

I have to agree that it is waaaaay up there (though I might put Wh (the song) in second place). I remember hearing the song TISL and reading the lyrics and thinking that La Nicks had lost none of her writing talent. TISL (the song) is epic.

Although it's not a favorite, the lyrics to this song are righteous. Pure poety in motion. I can definitely relate to the "the ones who walk away, try to love again" line. Boy, how I've been there.

This was one of the earlier songs written for TISL? Correct? I can't recall the story behind it.

I think she said she had Love is written after the end of the SA tour - then, the writer's block/pall -- then Petty's pep talk - then TISL the song in like 1995 or 96.

You guys are welcome! I'm just glad I ran into this online!!!:)

very nice! I never heard that version. Like most of the songs on TISL, the demo vocal is far, far superior to the record version in terms of range, emotion and pretty much everything else. I know the expensive, studio vocal is supposed to sound the best but her demos are amazing. IMO her voice on the demos sounds like she did years ago.

I know Stevie said a big inspiration behind the song TISL came from watching the OJ trial. Seeing how someone could climb to the absolute top, stratosphere of their career and existence, and lose it all. And she kinda fashioned the whole theme of the album around that... having it all, and realizing how easily it can crumble.

If you would have said that to me 8 years ago, I would have disagreed with you heartily. But listening to TISL now, it's very production and polish heavy. Some songs have aged extremely well, and others, not so much. I tend to like the demos to most all of her songs better than the finished product, because the overproduction kinda took the soul out of them. I still think the song TISL is fantastic though, and songwriting AND production wise, up there with anything she's ever done.

That is a great version of TISL. I love the ending. So many times her demos are better than the finished product.

starshine 05-10-2009 04:33 PM

I heard someone mention this before but this is the first time I've heard it....its different & longer....sometimes her voice on this reminds me of some of Mirror vocals a little bit.....just a thought.........its nice to finally hear it. I wish we had other demos too (not outtakes since they are not the same) like to Standback or WildHeart etc.....all that haven't leaked out which is alot really.....outtakes & alternates are really finished songs......just somewhat different versions....at least to me.......thanks for sharing....cool!!!
