SN: Maybe Band Can't Afford Europe

[This excerpthttp://www.nj.com/newsflash/index.ss...ent&thispage=1 is from an AP article about bands offering deals and bargain, faced with the soft economy]

But with this year's economic uncertainty, promoters could have a tougher time filling seats.

"In a crowded marketplace in difficult economic times, you want your show or event to stand out as something people recognize as a deal," said Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of the concert industry publication Pollstar.

Rocker Stevie Nicks, who's currently on a reunion tour with Fleetwood Mac, said times are so bad, the band doesn't know if it can afford to go overseas: "It's so expensive to do that that you put people out of business to go play for them. It's affecting everybody."

People need to drop their going rates all around, not just the band members - but everyone all down the line... Things are too inflated.

Maybe if they stopped gouging prices, more casual fans would go to their concerts. I'm not sure if that would make more money, but it's a good idea anyway.

Are there a lot of unnecessary "extras" that could be eliminated to lower costs? I imagine this band travels in a manner I can't even imagine.

As a HUGE Man fan in the UK I'm getting fed up with the uncertainty - haha! I wish the band would just announce dates or either issue a statement saying that the tour will be US only. Keeping everyone waiting doesn't seem fair. Does anyone agree that in the economic times they keep mentioning it is more responsible to give people as much notice as possible so they can budget for a trip as best as possible etc?

I really doubt that there won't be any European/British dates. There have to be - I couldn't handle the disappointment if there weren't - haha! But seriously, half the band are English after all so it would be VERY bad form for them not to come to the UK/Europe. In fact, if they didn't come to the UK/Europe after all of this I'd be GUTTED and would be annoyed with them for not rewarding their fans! I'm sure there are plenty of people who agree?

I dont think they even give enough notice here either, It was like, i found out theyd be touring one day, and even though my show here wasnt for months and months, the tickets went on sale 2days later. Not NEARLY enough time to budget that in. Im still going, but seriously, it should be different.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make it to Europe- same reason Stevie hasn't come to Europe to perform since 1989. It's all about the $$$ , not just now but always has been.
The Say You Will shows in the UK were well attended, but in Germany, the biggest music market in Europe, they most definitely weren't. Several shows even got cancelled. So unless the band scale down their operations and agree to make less money per gig than they do in the US, I'm afraid we're going to have to do with the Unleashed dvd if that ever comes out...

Wasn't it only one Germany show cancelled?

Stevie, your band put two promoters out of business and drove a municipality into bankruptcy in *North America* on the SYW tour. Just FYI.

It wouldn't be so expensive to play Europe if Stevie (and the others) backed off of their established fee. Just another BS excuse.

If they hit the festival circuit (as they've been rumored to), that cuts back on a lot of expenses right there. I don't think they'll skip Europe entirely... but would they play more dates if they gave up the G4 and if Miss Nicks took a 10-15% fee cut? Of course. But they won't.

that little factoid never ever gets old.

I would be seriously peeved if they didn't do Europe. I get that it costs money to tour the band, but it also costs money to see the band - and we don't have as nearly as much money to burn in our pockets as they do.

I never really understood why they didn't tour worldwide during the Mirage tour, and it's kind of a kick in the teeth to the worldwide fans who never got to see them, yet bought their album.

I don't believe money can be such an issue, especially when, collectively, they are worth as much as they are. If you're that into playing music, you ditch the unnecessary crap and do what you love. There's no need for excess, anymore. And, I really think touring before new materoal hasn't helped. If they release something after the tour's over, I'd seriously have to question to point of the tour to begin with. Not everyone has money to burn in their pocket, but at least with new material, we'd be getting something other than what they've been re-hashing for years on end. I'm really surprised that nothing from SYW is even in the set list. And, if no new material appears, this tour will seem like it was just for the sake of touring, and it may seem like a waste of money.
