Lindsey "Under the Covers"
This sounds like Lindsey makes a cameo on Susanna Hoffs' new album Under the Covers. I wonder what he's doing. I hope he's singing and not just playing the guitar. I can't recognize him on guitar, so it doesn't do me much good to have him make an instrumental appearance only:
Wilmington Music Examiner, April 7, 2009 http://www.examiner.com/x-5237-Wilmi...der-the-Covers The remaining trio is planning to record a new album, but fans won’t have to wait too long for new music from at least one of the Bangles. On July 22 Under the Covers, Vol. 2, Hoffs’ second collaboration with power -pop icon Matthew Sweet, will be released on Shout! Factory records. The new album follows Under the Covers, Vol. 1, the critically acclaimed collection of 60s hits released in 2006. Sweet and Hoffs, otherwise known as “Sid & Susie,” are pulling a bit of a Barry Manilow – following one compilation of decade-centered cover tunes with another collection from the next decade. Produced and recorded by Sweet and Hoffs in Sweet’s Lolina Green Studios in Los Angeles, Under The Covers Vol. 2 features the pair’s perfectly harmonized voices on favorites from the genres of power-pop, glam, classic rock and even prog-rock. They get a little help from Lindsey Buckingham on their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News,” Dhani Harrison plays on George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness,” and Steve Howe guests on their version of the Yes song “I’ve Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People.” |

Does Matthew Sweet still tour? I bet he does an occasional LB song in concert. He has listed Mac as an influence for years, & has done studio work with Dashut. |

Hopefully he'll do something different for the solo. He can't just play it the way he plays the song himself. Of course, maybe he'll just sing "do it, do it, do it" between the verses. Ha.
Now, I would be so into him performing NGBA with Matchbox Twenty, joining in their take on it. Beauty. To me their cover is metallic, a bit robotic and distancing and sounds like someone who has removed themself from love, after being burned. Lindsey's rendition is more in keeping with his stated explanation for the song (that he found pleasure and joy again, after thinking he never would) -- which doesn't exactly fit in with the lyrics. Obviously, Lindsey's version is perfection, but I'd love to hear him approach it from the other direction. With Rob Thomas? Yes, indeed. Take me there. Michele |
Has anyone seen Dhani Harrison? He looks SO MUCH like his dad, it's eerie!

That was a little irrelevant, but you did ask. Incidentally, if anyone is interested in checking out how Dhani looks/what he's doing he's in the new issue of "Blender" magazine. :) |
I'm really excited to hear about this album. The first Under The Covers Vol.1 is an amazingly cool album. I just love it.:]
I really like The Bangles (i.e. Susanna Hoffs). I'm not as familiar with Matthew Sweet, but I know he is a much lauded talent in the music industry. He's had a big hit (that I can't think of at the moment) that I like alot. His influences are impeccable, his knowledge of music is vast, and his production skills are impressive. There's a live performance of him performing Magnet & Steel (Walter Egan song?) that's so good...and if my memory serves me right, Lindsey is a guest player. They chose some great songs to cover. It's not surprising that a Fleetwood Mac/Lindsey Buckingham song would make the list. |
I'm excited for this too, loved the first Under The Covers album

Matthew Sweet is a massive fan of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Buckingham so it doesn't surprise me he and Susanna have covered Second Hand News on the new album. |

The version I have is from this CD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sabrina-Teen...9298650&sr=1-1 (And yes I am admitting owning a Sabrina soundtrack) I assume Sweet got to know Lindsey through Richard Dashut, who produced his album Altered Beast. Here's an old thread about Matthew Sweet btw http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=9882 And here's an interview with Sweet's band The Thorns where he talks about Lindsey and FM as an influence: http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/1471...3/thorns.jhtml |
Sorry to bump this thread but I finally dug up the Sabrina CD and the version of Magnet & Steel by Matthew Sweet (with backing vocals and lead and rhythm guitar by Lindsey, say the liner notes) is definitely a studio version, like I said. It says it was recorded and mixed at Ocean Way, Los Angeles and Susanna Hoffs also sings backing vocals.
I can post it for anyone who doesn't have it wants to hear it. |
Hmmm.....
This is the first time that I've seen this thread. Very interesting. I am actually going to this Bangles concert next month in Dewey. Already have my tickets. I've never seen them before, & I've always like them, so I'm really excited. My brother wants me to take some pictures, mostly of Susanna Hoffs; thinks she "hot".
I've never heard of this Matthew Sweet though before. I may get this Under the Cover, Vol. 2. I don't have Vol. 1. Is it any good? Lee :) |

http://cart.shoutfactorystore.com/st...2666311306.jpg Under The Covers Vol. 2 drops July 21, 2009. Details: Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs delighted rock and pop fans when they teamed up as Sid n Susie to record an album’s worth of ’60s classics called Under the Covers Vol. 1. In the three years since, people have continued to ask us when Vol. 2 will come out and what it’ll contain. Well, the wait is over: Under the Covers Vol. 2 finds our heroes moving forward through rock’s back pages to take on a other ’nother decade: the ’70s. From the power-pop like The Raspberries and Big Star to the soft-rock of Carly Simon and Bread, and from the classic-rock of John Lennon and Derek and the Dominos to the prog-rock of Yes, Sid n Susie offer a pretty thorough survey of the state of rock, just before the Sex Pistols. 1 Sugar Magnolia (The Grateful Dead) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 2 Go All The Way (The Raspberries) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 3 Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 4 Bell Bottom Blues (Derek & The Dominoes) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 5 All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 6 You’re So Vain (Carly Simon) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 7 Here Comes My Girl (Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 8 I’ve Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People (Yes) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 9 Hello It’s Me (Todd Rundgren) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 10 Willin’ (Little Feat) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 11 Back Of A Car (Big Star) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 12 Couldn’t I Just Tell You (Todd Rundgren) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 13 Gimme Some Truth (John Lennon) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 14 Maggie May (Rod Stewart) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 15 Everything I Own (Bread) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs 16 Beware Of Darkness (George Harrison) Matthew Sweet / Susanna Hoffs |

When I know Lindsey is there and I hear a guitar, I figure it's him. Also, at the concerts when I heard the acoustic stuff before the show, I knew it was him. But no. I can't recognize his fingers on stuff. If you played me 3 things and asked me to pick which was Lindsey, I could probably do that. I think I'd score high on a multiple choice. But if I was just sitting listening to The Devil Gets More Credit Than He Deserves and I didn't know already, I wouldn't just say, "That's Lindsey. I'd know his sound anywhere!" Michele |
From an interview with Susanna and Matthew
[I'm rather annoyed that Lindsey is called "one of the original guys" with no indication that he also wrote SHN. I mean, knock, knock, hello?] http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2009/0...matthew-sweet/ MAGNET: Why did you move to L.A. from New York, Matthew? Sweet: I came out here to record Altered Beast with Richard Dashut, and Dashut severely turned me on to L.A. He was like this magic leprechaun that showed me all the groovy, classic L.A. factors. He took me to all the different areas. He showed me the old clubs on Sunset Strip and took me by where Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and him rented a house together (when Dashut produced Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tusk). And Stevie would go down to Ben Franks on Sunset Boulevard and work all day, and they would sit at the house and smoke pot. He turned me on to the California dream sort of thing. Any feedback from the original artists on your Under The Covers sets? I know Mike Nesmith liked “Different Drum” from the first one. Who else? I’m sure the Raspberries will be thrilled (with “Go All The Way”). We met them when they played out here about a year ago. It would have been great to have had Wally Bryson and Eric Carmen play on that. We did get one of the original guys to play on the Fleetwood Mac song and the Yes song, and that was really fun. We got Lindsey Buckingham to play on “Second Hand News” and Steve Howe from Yes to play on “I’ve Seen All Good People.” He played a Portuguese 12-string and the crazy electric lead. |
Got the new CD 'Under The Covers vol 2', which so far is quite good.
The Second Hand News cover is interesting and Lindsey's lead guitar is super cool. Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs had this to say on the CD liner notes for FM's cover: "Speaking of sex...'lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff'? We're there! Lindsey graces this with his guitar genius. Our friend, our inspiration, we bow at your feet. For yea it is written: the prophet Buckingham is a true rock god who wields the power of Zeus through his fingers and voice!" |
From an interview with Hoffs:
Pennsylvania Daily Times, July 24, 2009 http://www.delcotimes.com/articles/2...7339108060.txt To complete the latest “Under the Covers” dish, Sweet and Hoffs brought some pretty big name chefs to help out, like Lindsey Buckingham, who plays guitar on the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News.” “I know Lindsey because our kids play together, but also because Matthew and I both played with him on something back in the ’90s,” Hoffs said. “He just came over to the studio the day before he left for this recent Fleetwood Mac tour and was just such a sweetheart. He came in, put any guitar in his hands and it’s Lindsey Buckingham playing and it’s just sort of otherworldly. “He doesn’t use a pick, I don’t know how he does it, it’s so natural to him, and we just said, “Go crazy.” And then he just does his thing and it’s magic.” |
You can listen to it, and several other cuts also, on their myspace:

[Is Lindsey playing at childrens' birthday parties now? Do kids really prefer him to bouncy balls?]
http://www.masslive.com/entertainmen...thew_swee.html Excerpt from interview with Hoffs and Sweet The first "Under the Covers" CD featured songs from the 1960s, while the new one hits the 1970s. The record spans the wide range of styles that met in that decade, and includes such diverse offerings as The Raspberries "Go All the Way," George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness," and even a progressive rock track, "Your Move/All Good People" by Yes. Yes guitarist Steve Howe even sat in on the track, as did Fleetwood Mac's Lindsay Buckingham on a version of "Second Hand News." "We both knew Lindsay a little bit, I met him in studio years ago and and one of Sue's kids goes to school with Lindsay's kids," Sweet said. "And he ended up playing at Sue's birthday party, so we asked him if could do it." |

One of the worst cuts on the album........do yourself a favor and get VOL. 1...MUCH better!!!!! |
Excerpt from Morning Call interview
http://www.mcall.com/entertainment/m...1.story?page=1 Getting guitarist Lindsey Buckingham for Fleetwood Mac's ''Second Hand News'' was easier. ''We know him from a ways back, both of us, and also one of Sue's kids goes to school with Lindsey's son,'' Sweet says. ''He was at Sue's birthday party last January and she's like'' -- his voice lowers to a whisper -- ''Ask him about playing on it.'' |
