Nicks - My Boots Are Killing Me!
Stevie Nicks -- future Canadian resident?
Winnipeg Sun Don't laugh, the 60-year-old singer just returned from performing Fleetwood Mac shows in Montreal and Toronto and really likes it up north. And there's still three Western Canadian dates in May. "It was fantastic because we actually got to be in Canada for a while instead of just flying in and out," said Nicks, down the line from New York City to chat up her new solo releases, the Live in Chicago DVD and The Soundstage Sessions CD, released Tuesday. "I really like Canada, and I think it's really friendly and we laugh because we think it's more romantic than the United States. I'm sorry, United States, because I'm from here but we see more people walking around holding hands there, we see more of an intimate relationship going on there than the hustle and bustle of the United States. Of course, I love my country, but it's kind of like I think, 'Gee, you know when I'm done with all this maybe I'll just get a really cool penthouse apartment somewhere in Canada.' " Just 17 shows into the Fleetwood Mac -- Greatest Hits Unleashed Tour (and 40 to go) Nicks says she's enjoying herself. But Nicks says performing as a solo act, as she does on both her new live CD/DVD, taking on covers like Dave Matthews' Crash Into Me, inviting singer-pianist Vanessa Carlton to join her on stage and telling an incredible story about writing Dreams in Sly Stone's black velvet studio in Sausalito, Calif., is quite different than being part of the group. "When I'm in my own band, I'm really talkative, I really try to tell stories, I really try to relate to the audience and I become more who I really am," said Nicks. "When I'm in Fleetwood Mac I become that more mysterious, quieter creature. 'DO A TAP DANCE?' "And that's always been since the very beginning. People have said to me, 'Well, you know you could get out there a little bit more since Lindsey (Fleetwood Mac guitarist Buckingham) is running around the stage like a crazy whirling dervish.' And I'm going, 'But I don't do that.' What am I supposed to do? Do a tap dance? Or cartwheels? Or jump down in the splits? What should I do to keep up with Lindsey? So I don't try." Nicks, meanwhile, said her bum knees and hip have improved due to some serious workouts on something called A Power Plate, developed by the Russians for astronauts. She actually fell on stage during a solo performance at Casino Rama in 2007. "It's kind of this vibrating plate and you stand on it and you just do little yoga positions and it's all of 14 minutes. But I've been doing this every other day for a year and I have really fixed my knees and my hip and I'm in pretty darn good shape. We took it with us on the road. It's this big ass machine and we built a big case for it and we roll it in and we use it." That doesn't mean her signature high-heeled suede boots aren't a pain to put on every night. "It is a very big pain because I don't wear heels in my regular life," said Nicks. "So putting on the platforms again to walk around for two hours and 20 minutes -- well, it's horrible. From the time you put them on to when you take them off is about three hours. I may be donning my Canadian black fur suede wedge boots in the future because I'm just about ready to throw all those boots out on the street because they're killing me. They're taking my mind off my singing because my feet hurt so bad." Nicks said she may even revert to the platform tennis shoes she wore on previous Fleetwood Mac tours. "You know what? They worked. And I wore the velvet leg warmers that covered up half of them and I mean I thought it was really important to the fans to wear the boots. But now I'm starting to think, 'You know what? So I'll wear boots for the first four songs and then they get to see them. And then I'll put them back on at the end.' " |
It is as we thought
Thanks for posting. |

OHNOOHNOOHNO...NOT THE PLATFORM SNEAKERS...anything but those...I mean what about the 'witch boots' from the RAL cover? Those are cool, low heeled and, perhaps most importantly, not the platform sneakers! Or barefoot...or sandals...hell, arthepedic shoes! but, Stevie, in the name of all that's holy, do not bring back the franken-boots!!!
 |
I agree with her proposal to wear the boots at the beginning and at the end- I can live with that compromise. But can't she find something other than those Frankenbocks? Maybe a de-uglified version of Uggs?
|
LOVED this interview Stevie is so cute!!
I dont mind if Stevie wears the "Franken Boots" for a few songs during a show. When Stevie's comfortable she rocks out better. I just hope she doesnt throw them out!! Or else I might have to dig through her trash for a pair  But I like her idea about the boots at the begining and then comfy boots and then boots at the end. |
I want to know which street and when she's going to throw those boots out because I'll be there picking every one of them up and running away!!!
Thank you Stevie for enduring such pain for the fans. Did the leg warmers pulled over the boks really look better? I don't remember seeing a pic like that. Works for me. Something I've been pondering: The Sly Stone black velvet room mentions of late... am I old or has she said red velvet in other interviews? (maybe I'm confusing Sly with Elvis) I've been meaning to look that up, but finding time for such things is becoming harder and harder. |
I wonder how ballet flats would work for her.
And if she loves Canada so much - she should do some more dates in the prairies. Hint hint. :p |

Yeah they really did look a lot better with the leg warmers. That's what she did on the 2005 Gold Dust Tour, and I actually sort of forgot she had them on. Without the legwarmers it looked like little skinny legs with big bricks on the bottom like on the SYW and TISL tours..but the legwarmers made them work. |
so the truth finally comes out! Geeez, I was hoping she was fine with the boots but apparently not. I say whatever takes Stevie's mind off her singing and performing is not a good thing. If the boks need to come back, then bring 'em on back. I was actually used to them after the first couple of years. And the legwarmers did help tremendously.

why cant SOMEBODY create platform boots with ugz like inside...so theyd look great on the outside, and super comfy on the inside? i cant believe there arent a pair of comfy boots out there somewhere!
|
In the dancing sequence in the ICW vid, it appears she is wearing black suede flat boots. In the beginning when she marches up the stairs, it appears she is wearing boots with a small stilleto.
I like her idea of a wedge, better than the Frankenbocks. |
At 60 years old and still going strong, that woman could wear pillows strapped to her feet if she wants to. After the tumultuous 90's it's so nice to see Stevie enjoying herself in her performing, why torture her by expecting her to wear shoes that kill her feet. At 40 I find I have to be way more careful about the kind of shoes I wear when I'm doing a lot of walking or standing on my feet. I miss the days when I could throw on my converse sneakers and go. I just can't do it anymore. Stevie, I feel your pain. And dare I call it... the agony of defeat. (get it?)
|
It's funny because she really answered all the boot questions people have asked her here.
She should stop spying on us! Michele |
I think Stevie should endure the pain. After all, Lindsey's fingers bleed all over his guitar (according to Carol's book).
|
Take off the freaking boots and have some fun, girl! (some brave soul should hold up a sign saying that at their first concert back--alas, that would not be me).
Any interview that refers to whirling dervishes and big-ass machines is okay in my book! |

I love the idea of her wearing "Canadian black fur suede wedge boots" as opposed to those franknboots...and from the sound of it that is what she wants to do....sooooooo....she should!! :woohoo: |
ooh this was a good article. you know the lastest batch of interviews really made me think that somebody from her camp frequents these boards, LOL! At this point I dont care what she wears as long as she starts to move around more and I would love to see her do some cart wheels!!
|
Although I'm not a fan of those tennis shoes she's worn - especially when she was wearing a dress.... I think the tennis shoes would look fine if she brought back those sparkly pants she had on during the 07 tour, the ones where it looked like they were leg warmers at the bottom - and she wore what looked like a mini skirt over the pants.... That would look alright, then she could bring out the boots for certain songs during the show, or at the beginning of the show, the middle and the end... Just switch it up abit if she can't handle them...
|
Another good interview. If Stevie wants to move to Canada, she better toughen up and not let alittle pair of boots hurt her ;)
|
i like the idea of beginning and end of the show pulling out da platforms
but doesnt SOMEONE here know a shoemaker? and could send Stevie a sexy size 6 shoe for her concert going :D i dont mind the frankenbockers but i'd really rather not see them |
I will never understand why she feels she needs to wear either 6-inch platform boots or Frankenbots.
No shoe designer has ever struck a nice, happy, flatish medium? Comfort doesn't have to be ugly. But, I'm hoping her spies will read the boards, give her our blessings over losing the shoes (because, really, does the casual fan care at all about her choice of shoe-gear?) and let her relax and enjoy herself up there instead of being in pain. |

first the new record murmurings now the bootage *thinks fast* what else do we want answers to? {besides the burning SOTM Q lol} |
Good interview and I will be the first to say I love the boots, but if that is what is causing her to look "bored" or something... enduring the pain... I will gladly want to see Stevie in more comfy shoes if it will mean she will be happier and rock out more.
It is nice to hear she is doing it because she knows the fans love the boots. Oh, and yes... Stevie, if you don't want the boots anymore, contact me, okay? I will be more than happy to buy them from you. :D:nod: |

As for a comfortable pair of boots, she should get those shock absorbant Clarks ones. I have a pair, got em on ebay. 4 inches. Black suede. Beautiful! |
She should wear whatever she's comfortable in. Bless her heart for wearing those boots for so long when they hurt her. I've got knee problems, arthritis in one, and it hurts like hell sometimes. When it's damp out, like when it rains or whatever, forget it. I cannot imagine how it would be to try and dance in heels like that. I'm not even 50 yet, and I can't move around like she can, lol. I wouldn't love her or her performance any less if she chucked the platforms.
|
So on her next solo tour she can do fabulous t-shirts that say "The Frankenboks are Back!!".
I know this isn't funny but it's just my warped sense of humor coming through!:laugh: |

I wish she could compromise a bit.
Not as great as the boots, but not as bad as the sneakers, what about some clogs? At least it's 70's style, sorta... They have black suede, even burgundy to match her new dress...even a crushed velvet look...and they are very comfortable. (new at trying to insert a pic...hope this works...) And then there are some that remind me of some of the shoes she wore in the 70's when not on stage...(pic #2 below) I have never worn the high heeled ones here, but Dansko is suppose to be a very comfy brand... |

Stevie should take the boots off if this is how they are making her feel. Gorgeous as they are, her comfort and the resulting performances are what matters. I mean, one does not wear the 'Boks as a fashion statement, so it was always obvious she was wearing them out of neccesity, and then brought the boots back just for us. You don't switch to the 'Boks, age another ten years, and then suddenly find the boots wearable again. I'm sure her boots are custom made, so they are probably already as comfy as 6" platforms can possibly be. I think the 'Boks look perfectly fine with leg warmers or pants. But some hip wedges could be a great middle ground. I'm only 30, and I'm a fan of the wedge!

stevie could still do the boots with wedge or flat and still be looking good...

;) I suppose, to each their own. I'd rather see regular sneakers than platform ones though. But whatever she feels comfy in. What about if she switched to pants for live shows, would everyone miss the dresses? Her leather pants and her "Janis" pants? Then other shoes and sneakers would fit in better, rather than trying to pair a chiffon dress with sneakers. She could save her beautiful stuff for photo shoots and videos. I figure as long as she's still singing and performing (and making new cd's and dvd's), I could settle for her wearing a Lane Bryant moo-moo and still be happy hearing her sing. Where as some fans would probably rather go blind. But seriously, I wouldn't mind seeing her in casual clothes on stage. Some of the candid photos we see every now and then, she looks great. And the stuff she wears when like visiting the soldiers in the hospitals, and things she wears to radio interviews and such. And give her a stool to sit on during the slow songs. Lindsey and John too. Nothing wrong with that, and it'd give them a little break during the show. I'm like half their age, and my feet are killing me some times after a long day (when not in my clogs, lol). She shouldn't have to "suffer for the love." ;) They could slip in a little acoustic part of the concert, like she did during Enchanted, and they could sit and chill out for a bit. We got one more great show from her in her boots on dvd right now. And some great fan photos of her from this current tour in her boots. I can understand if they go. Just as long as she doesn't go. |
I wouldn't care if Stevie didn't wear the boots anymore...I want to see her like this again:
|
Yeah, I've never cared if she wore her boots. It never bothered me one bit when she was wearing the boks. I did like on the CV tour when she wore her orange boots on Rhiannon, Dreams and Sorcerer, but its not a big deal. I don't know why it matters so much to so many of you.
