"Everyday" with Dean Karr

It was a tremendous honor to Direct Stevie Nicks music video for "Everyday". I had a great time collaborating with her on every level! My favorite scene was the black hedges with the two black swans. She looked KILLER at this location. Someone just this morning asked me to elaborate on the story Stevie told on the "Crystal Visions" dvd about me asking her to lie in the swan pond. It took me a minute to remember this, but I was after a performance of her appearing as if "floating" weightlessly on top of the water, as I shot it from directly above her while she sang her lyrics. I knew it was a stretch, but hey, at least I asked her.....It was a two day shoot and I remember being so excited to get to set each morning to make beautiful images with her. I've compiled a truly rare and intimate "Behind the Scenes" book, which I'm making available to fans of hers and mine. If anyone has questions about the shoot or is interested in obtaining one of these cool books email me at [email protected] they are $175 each + $15 insured shipping and handling. Payapl is best and I will get out to you the same day I receive payment via Priority Mail, which usually takes to days to get to your doorstep.

very cool shots, i love this video & the black swan part is one of my favs in the video, along w/ her in the peach dress~

BTFLCHLD 03-25-2009 11:05 AM

The director of "Everyday" has visited The Ledge?!

Great work!!! I would love to see more BTS of this video shoot...cool shots below...are there more??

Jill, refresh my memory, did Stevie say she liked that peach dress? And, didn't she make a comment regarding the dead-table and tree-waiting concepts?

RockALittle250 03-25-2009 11:09 AM

Thanks for sharing these with us Dean!

By the way, since you directed the Dave Matthews Band "Crash into Me" music video, what do you think of Stevie's cover of "Crash" that's on her upcoming CD?

The peach dress wasn't a "hit" for myself or Stevie. It was made by two costume designers and wasn't available to preview until on set. The outcome dampened the day for a moment, but we got back on track.

nailatixela 03-25-2009 11:13 AM

I thought producers get paid enough money so they don't have to sell stuff like this? However I might like something like this for the best music video in the world - Gypsy. I know you already sold all of these pics on ebay Dean - thankfully a fan posted them some time for us all.

Stevie said she hated the peach dress.

It also sounded like Stevie and Dean didn't get along very together very well.

I have to say, of all Stevie's videos, with and without Fleetwood Mac, Everyday is my favorite. It just captures her essence completely. Those pictures are beautiful... any Stevie fan would love to have them!

So was the theme for the video your idea?

Is Stevie as much of a diva to work with as she'd seem like?

 oh, I'm not really into the costumes...as such.

My favorite parts of the video are stevie 'grayscale', the dinner table present/haunt, the black swans and rock visuals and that verycool thingy that happens at 1:18...hehe. :D

Dean thank you so much for sharing these beautiful images. "Everyday" is a gorgeous piece of work.

Besides her Tusk look, Stevie in the peach dress has been my favorite look of hers. I don't know why she didn't like it?

It came down to the wire as far as nobody knowing how exactly it would fit till we were on set. Thats just the way that it goes sometimes with production, especially when record labels don't award the jobs until four days before shooting. The couple who made it needed every last hour to finish it. When it arrived on set it was a combo of Stevie and I being unhappy with the color and the ruffles. We expected a little different hue and the fit of the dress needed to be re-adjusted a bit on set. We overcame it and moved on, but it was a bit of an issue. You could always ask Nailatixela she seems to KNOW quite a bit, I didn't know she was on set......

I for one would be very interested in this book. Please let us know when it's completed how we might get a copy. I thought the video was breathtaking and loved all the hard work you put into it. Thanks for visiting us here on The Ledge.

Would you mind letting us in on the inspiration behind the video. I know it's been discussed here before but it would be really interesting hearing it right from the horses mouth, so to speak. :)

HejiraNYC 03-25-2009 01:01 PM

Dean, I have to join the chorus of well-wishers here. A much belated "thank you" for producing such a stunning piece of work. It is by far the most vivid and haunting of Stevie's videos, as well as the most creative. Regarding some of the imagery, I can't help but wonder whether you drew inspiration from Carly Simon's "Boys in the Trees," especially the part where the boys are, um, up in the trees. I have been trying to find the hidden meaning behind the big feast, the rodent invasion of said feast and the subsequent dozing off (or death?) of the guests of said feast. Well... even if there is no real meaning to any of this, the imagery is still breathtaking and surreal.

Also, I love the B&W shot you chose for the cover of the book. Can this be purchased as a large-scale piece?

Yeah, well I'm the kind of GUY who doesn't talk to much so you must not have noticed me. :p

Stevie has talked about this video before - that's where I learned she didn't like the dress if you are upset over that. Thank god you and Stevie overcame the dress. I just got the feeling you and Stevie didn't get along good from her video commentary for Everyday, that's all. She said something like you must think of her as a female black swan (or some other animal, I'm clueless) because she was grumpy.

Ghosty 03-25-2009 03:05 PM

I love this video. A book would be very cool. I love the black swans, and the black dress is amazing. From what little I have seen of the ivory/white dress, that is quite beautiful too, and I love her hair in that scene. Even though there is no wedding cake or anything on the table it always reminds me of Great Expectations. The peach dress always struck me as an unusual choice, but now I see it wasn't what had originally been intended. It reminds me of a bridesmaid's dress gone awry. But - Stevie Nicks seems to be able to pull anything off, even that. :)

HEY DEAN!!
First of all...WELCOME to The Ledge =)
Second...I must say that "Everyday" is such an AWESOME music video!! Too bad you and Stevie didnt like the peach dress. I really liked it on her and thought the color looked great on her. But hey Stevie knows best =P Also, I think video outtakes from the shoot would be awesome ;)

I'll be dropping you an email shortly about the book :wavey:

I agree, the video is one of the best produced video she's done. Too bad it's for a song she didn't write, and one she has completely forgotten. It's pleasant and just a little generic. I wonder if she was given the song and told to record it for the sole intent of having a hit. Granted, it did get fair air play, but it's one of her songs that you'll never see on any future compilations.

I love this video and have wondered about the "men in trees" and other imagery as well. Would love to hear more about the inspiration..and those wonderful black swans.

It's my favorite part of the video. It's almost like a representation of former her lovers. I also know that some people thought that Rappacini's Daughter was a big inspiration in this video.

Mama poisoned them all :D

whitewingdove73 03-25-2009 07:29 PM

Thank you for sharing those pictures with us Dean.

I have to disagree with you in one thing.

I thought Stevie looked gorgeous with the Peach dress. She looked kinda liked she looked back in 1982. The hair, the color of the dress...everything. So believe it or not I adored that style the best from the whole video.

I loved the swans too btw :p

Bella Figura 03-25-2009 07:32 PM

Hi Dean, thank you for sharing your pics and thoughts about working with Stevie on her Everyday Video...it's also my favorite...I will add my name to the list of those interested in a book compilation...thank you again!!

silversprings62 03-25-2009 07:33 PM

Hey Dean!
I don't know about anyone else, but I would love a book with behind the scenes stories about our girl. We get so very little of this kind of information, it would be a treat to have a first hand account from someone who was given the privilege to work with Stevie. So I hope you get a lot of positive responses and thank you so much for posting here!

sleepless child 03-25-2009 07:42 PM

Thanks Dean for showing us the great photos from your video shoot. I loved the video and would also be greatly interested in the book. Any tidbits about the shoot you want to share? :D

PoetofRhiannon 03-25-2009 07:48 PM

Wow. I would love to have a copy of such an awesome book!
:]

Add me to da list!
:D

"Everyday" is a beautiful video right down the line, from the production, to the abstract imagery. And Stevie looks down right gorgeous in it!! By far her best video, in my opinion since "Gypsy".
Kudo's to Dean for re-capturing the mystique of Stevie in all her glory!

That black and white also comes in a color version, I will post those later or tomorrow. They are both editions of 25, with 5 artist proofs and available either through my gallery in Maui or directly from me. Probably cheaper through me....they are massive prints (20x24) $600 + $15 insured Priority Mail. I could also email you a small jpeg.

Dean, have you heard Stevie's version of "Crash into Me" yet from her upcoming CD? I'd love to know what you think of her version.

Phoenix 03-26-2009 12:26 AM

The Everyday video is PERFECTION. It ALWAYS wins here on the ledge when all us fans take a poll to rate our favorite video from her solo career. I used to live in Australia and there used to be black swans that lived in a pond across the street from my house. I miss seeing them. When i saw the video it was really heartwarming to see my all-time favorite artist and black swans!!! (a random paring i never thought id see!)
Awhile ago i had purchased some of the "everyday proofs" that are Stevie in that infamous peach dress in "the forest" that are beautiful, do you sell larger reproductions of those? Again, i want to tell you that I LOVE the song Everyday, and your video and concept made it even better! (also, i hear ur a Rush fan, so that alone means u rock!)
