My meet and greet with Mick Fleetwood Ottawa

So I got to meet with Mick Fleetwood. It was just me and my friend Janet up on the stage talking to Mick. We Met Steve Rinkoff who was setting up for the show. Basically I asked allot of good questions and got some good answers.

1. I asked about why Bob Welch was not in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and Mick said that he has lobbied to get his name on the list and they said no. He was very upset that Bob isn't in the Hall and told me that he didn't understand why he was not included. He also mentioned that when the band was inducted he had no formal paper or certificate like the other members had to say he was now a member and so he asked them time and again to send him one and nothing happened. Then a few years ago when he was asked to vote on new members via a ballot in the mail his wife blew the horn saying to someone at the hall that her own Husband Mick doesn't even have his formal certificate and someone said they would look into it. As a result he got his certificate.

2. The Sheryl Crow thing was according to Mick was pretty much as Stevie has said it was with the band planning to start rehearsing and she had all of these things going on and in the end she said no I will have to pass.

3. He said that the UK leg which will include Australia is going to start hopefully in Aug. They are working on the logistics to see if it will work. Then if the band is still wanting to play and the North American fans are not sick of them they will do another round of shows next year in North America.

4. He said that they rehearsed Hold Me in the early stages but when it got down to serious business they dropped it. Lindsey didn't want to play Monday Morning as per Mick's suggestion but when they found a clip from the Tusk tour where it was the opener it made Lindsey realize the potential and he agreed to do it this tour. I asked about SW and SOTM. He acknowledged the songs (even saying that SOTM used to be done quite often)and did say if the tour goes longer they will be changing up the set.

5. During the Dance tour without actually saying it was over, they kind of got the vibe from Chris that she wasn't having any fun and then she did eventually say she couldn't do this anymore. He said that twice they put out an olive branch to see if she was interested in the last album and she was coming around ,but when the tour was mentioned it was a deal breaker.

6. I asked about the possibility of a one of show with all former members past and present playing together and he said that was something he thought about but never spoken about till my conversation. He thought it was a great idea. At one point he said to me you should be our Manager. He was also impressed with my knowledge of all of the history of the band and when songs were last performed etc.

7. He said that the reason there is no backup drummers and no Carlos was because as he said jokingly I fired them all. He also said that why they started adding back up players was to reflect the multi layerd guitars and vocals on the album tracks and so they wanted to try and be as close to the album versions as possible.

8. The reason why Stand Back is in the set all these years is because they have allot of respect for her solo success and she has fun with it and the audience enjoys it so much.

I think that covers all that I talked about.

The show was great!!! My seats were in the 2nd row. At the end of the show I had a run in with a fellow fan. He was some guy in a nice suit who got a guitar pick and then took the setlist from the stage even after I told him that the band and stage crew had said during my meet an greet that I could have it. He said something very stupid about "I'm with or I know security". It was his tone of voice like one of those rich snobby people talking down to you like you are second class or something. Then he walked away with a smirk. Luckily near the entrance was a security guard who had two setlists in his pocket and he gave me one.

I guess that puts paid to the Glastonbury rumours then? Made me giggle how it says UK leg (which will include Australia)

Glad you had such a good experience!

I was in the 2nd row and my brother was in row 10 so he filmed the show in some parts.

Wow, that was a great read. You had some good questions, it really would be AMAZING to have a "Fleetwood Mac all-star one-time" show. Peter Green, Bob Welch, Rick Vito, and Mrs. Mcvie back with the band and playing. Also, Im glad that Sisters of the Moon is still on the radar at least and not totally forgotten. Theres still hope. Thx for posting.

LikeAWillow 03-24-2009 01:24 PM

Wow, sounds like an amazing conversation! Thanks for relaying all the details

Sorry about that. I just asked about the UK leg and he threw Australia into the mix saying it would be included.

...or an "all-star" album...

Thanks for the details, Matt! Your post convinces me that next time 'round, should I have the opportunity, I will also do the meet-and-greet. I have lots of questions. My only disappointment is that all this touring suggests that it will be longer til the next album (of course, all this touring could provide plenty of material for new songs).

MacMan 03-24-2009 01:37 PM

Wow Matt... That was excellent... Thanks for the details.

Wow, you really grilled him... that's awesome!! I'm so glad you asked about Sisters too... maybe, just maybe they'll finally get the clue that we're all dying to hear it before the band sings their swan song. Asking Mick about Bob being omitted from the RRHOF took some big cajones... I couldn't have done that LOL. I asked John the same question a few years back via the Penguin's Q&A, and he gave me a much more philosophical answer (ie: they couldn't very well have inducted all 16 members, and that it's highly subjective as to who should and should not be included). The only thing I wish you would have asked about is a new album! I fear them dragging this tour out too long, and getting sick of one another, and not going into the studio. I'm trying to keep positive though!! :blob2:

Test4echo 03-24-2009 02:42 PM

I can't help but feel an enormous amount of of jealousy and hate for you at the moment.
I'll post back later when my envy wears off....

Matt-You got some great detailed responses from Mick, some that the "professional" interviewers never get. That's exciting that he said they'll change up the setlist if the tour continues.

Thanks a lot for asking and for remembering what he said too!:)

What happened was the I Love All Access lady Cory said I have 1 question left to ask and I couldn't think of one so she said you must have 1 question you have been dying to ask. So I did ask about Bob.

I forgot to mention that he did say that he felt that SYW will eventually be remembered as fondly as Tusk has in the years since it's release.

Fantastic questions! Thanks for sharing those with us. So if EVERYONE mentions SOTM to Mick, do you think he might catch on and realize we really want it? I laughed when someone called it your "interview" with Mick

Nicks Fan 03-24-2009 02:53 PM

I also asked him about all of the members past and whether or not he sees him and his answer was the sam old one that he always gives about seeing so and so occassionaly or talking to so and so on the phone etc He never really got into specifics regarding anybody particular.

macpai 03-24-2009 03:00 PM

No. 6 was an amazing question. Good on ya!!! Boy if that came to fruition we'd all go happily bonkers.

I was surprised at No. 4. Monday Morning is a spectacular opener, it really gets it going on the right foot.

Cory is Cory Buckingham, niece of Lindsey I believe.

Thank you, Matt. For me, that is the most interesting tidbit of them all. I'm glad to hear someone speaking well of that album from inside the band.

I'm in end-of-decade mode so I started making my list of favorite albums of the decade so far (I know, 8.5 months still to go, but you know. . .) -- and when I took a look at the list so far, I was kinda surprised that SYW ranks as the best American album of the decade -- but, on second thought, of course it is! For all of its flaws (it should have been a double-cd), no other American album this decade can match it for ambition, scope, consistency, inventiveness, and overall musical excellence.

(The American albums it bests: David Morales' 2 Worlds Collide, Iris Dement's Lifeline, R. Kelly & Jay-Z's Best of Both Worlds, Justin Timberlake's FutureSexLoveSounds, Jay-Z's Blueprint, Lindsey Buckingham's Gift of Screws, Missy Elliott's Under Construction, Aaliyah's Aaliyah, Timbaland's Shock Value, Beyonce's I am... Sascha Fierce, Bruce Springsteen's Magic, and, maybe, Lindsey Buckingham's Under The Skin)

HejiraNYC 03-24-2009 03:27 PM

But you forgot to ask him what it was like to record Rumours while all of the couples in the band were breaking up!  :p

I'm glad you were able to "keep him honest," as it were. You really can't BS when you're being grilled by someone who has monitored your every career move for the last 40 years...

Nicks Fan 03-24-2009 03:27 PM

I cracked up whern he said he said "I fired them all" when I asked about the other back up band members

I can just imagine a Ledge thread in the year 2021, where everyone will be complaining that they won't do classics like "Silver Girl" in concert.

So Mick used the words UK and Australia, or was UK something you mentioned and he added Australia? Just trying to figure out whether they will only be hitting England or if they might hit some other countries too. :)

No worries, I'm certain these dates are not for 2009 since vinodates most likely are scheduled to occur on weekends and these dates correspond to Tuesday and Wednesday this year. These dates fell on Saturday and Sunday back in 2007 so I'm sure this is just out of date information.

jmn3 03-24-2009 11:15 PM

Wow what great questions you had for him. Good job!

That sucks about Hold Me. It would really be nice to see a good representation from Mirage and Tango, there are some great songs, and well known songs, on both albums that consistently are overlooked. I think Mick would love to expand the set a bit and it seems he's actualyl lobbied for SOTM in the past but for whatever reason, presumably Stevie says no.

Lindsey's hesitation on Monday Morning just proves again (to me anyway) how little faith they have in their fans. Seriously, they really think that people only want the Rumours songs, one or two off of Tusk, Rhiannon, ISA, Landslide, Stand Back, and a few fillers to take up time. Newsflash, a LOT of fans know the less popular numbers.

If they really wanted to change the set a bit for extended lengths, they have to have some additional post-1980 songs in the set and obviously, open up the Buckingham Nicks tunes a bit. It's unfathomable that they still haven't played Frozen Love anytime in the last 30 years. Considering the band is basically Buckingham Nicks w/the MickeyMac rhythym section, it just doesn't make any sense!

Yes, you did - a hell of a lot better than people asking "what's Stevie really like" or "What's your favorite song to play live?" :p Great questions, thanks for the info.
