Wow. I wonder if Elton and Bette Midler gross more or less than Cher when they perform at Caesar's. Wonder how Stevie did in comparison when she was there.

I am surprised that Anita Baker is that high up. I didn't know she could attract a crowd like that. I guess I just thought she fell by the wayside after Rapture.

After Mama's first residency at Caesars, I believe they dubbed it a "sellout" even though eyewitness accounts suggested otherwise. The official box office receipts were put at something like 1.1 million- not too shabby, all things considered.

I suspect even Celine would be playing half-empty shows in this economic climate, so I think Cher is doing exceptionally well, all things considered. I suspect Bette is seeing some empty seats too.

wolfontherun 03-18-2009 03:25 PM

Stevie Nicks is a huge draw. Without her there would be no FM. Just sayin!

MacMan 03-18-2009 03:44 PM

I'm surprised they didn't show both Rosemont shows combined in that total. They usually do that if there's multiple dates at one venue one right after the other.

Without a doubt! They would still be up Europe's creek without a paddle.

This is true. But, methinks that no one involved (FM/Live Nation/venue) wanted to acknowledge that only ~4500 tickets were purchased (including the discounted ones) to the Friday show.

LukeA 03-18-2009 04:12 PM

Generally speaking, the tour appears to be running at 60-65% capacity... and that's even with the deep discounted/unpublished ticket prices for almost all the dates.

John Run 03-18-2009 05:33 PM

Azoff built this deal and if Live Nation does not want to admit mediorce sales then too bad...However the band is doing just fine. Their guarantees are substantial considering the current economic climate and competition for the entertainment dollar. Live Nation may be taking a beating, but Stevie, Lindsey, Mick & John are doing just fine with this tour.

kak125 03-18-2009 05:36 PM

If I remember correctly FM sold more tickets this time around in Pittsburgh than they did on the SYW tour so I am sure they are doing good. Billboard updates this list every week so it will be interesting to watch the numbers from week to week. Not sure why they are about 3 weeks behind though.

hey thanks for posting that, i didnt realize they sold more tickets in 2003 here in pittsburgh but after thinking about it that makes perfect sense. i remember on the syw tour they sold seats behind the stage and this time the whole section behind the stage was empty. it makes sense though since there is no way you would have been able to see anything from back there anyway.

Kelly 03-18-2009 07:55 PM

It has always bugged me that Caesar's claimed those 2005 shows were "sell outs".

Um, no. There were lots of empty seats in the upper sections. Much of the floor were comps. I think she did ok, but not as well has she had hoped. A semi permanent residency was something she seemed to really want at the time. ;)

louielouie2000 03-18-2009 08:36 PM

$250+ to see Paul Simon and Cher??? Wow... we only thought we had it rough with FM's ticket prices.

You all will pelt me but I saw Paul Simon in concert and I would absolutely pay that amount to see him again. His show was unbelievable. Cher? I'd only go if someone invited me...and that's if they were cheaper too. I'm not really into her.:sorry:

Capacities listed in Billboard/Pollstar reporting are often manipulated to make it look like a show sold out clean (or didn't bomb as badly as it did).

skcin 03-26-2009 11:52 AM

I am actually pretty impressed that they're making this much - most of the other acts on this last were either for more than 1 show, or for more than 1 band on the bill.

Yes, as an eyewitness to this, I can tell you that I was upgraded from my upper level seat to a $150 lower level. This show, while I felt was the best of the 12 I saw, was also probably the most poorly attended. Some of this can probably be attributed to the terrible weather in the Detroit area that day, but not all.

Doesn't that mean there were only 1000 empty seats? Am I misunderstanding it? I don't think that's that bad. Boston had like 5000.

Well, what happened was that when they upgraded me, there was a entire 3 section area in the upper level opposite the stage that was blocked off with a curtain save for like the first 4 or 5 rows.

Capacities are easily manipulated. The actual capacity (in the seating configuration that FM was using) at this venue is closer to 18000-18500.

The average ticket price is ~$71, which shows just how many tickets were sold at deep discounts.

Still, Luke, you have to admit: these first series of shows were NOT the embarrasing disaster saleswise as you predicted- or even hoped .

The band still has some credit. Because they touched A LOT of lives through the years. Even if they are not what they were once (and who is after all those years), they still have some worth, even commercially.

"Hoped"? I resent that, Gerald. I've never wanted or hoped this band to fail at anything.

One show was canceled, several (Rochester, Rosemont #2, Auburn Hills, Toronto (3/17)) were disasters, most underperformed, and only a couple were truly successful. It looks like the second leg will shape up the same way.

I don't see that they underperformed. They got very positive reviews, the rythmsection and lindsey did not underperform AT ALL, Stevie had to grow into the tour, and the overall energylevel impressed a lot of people: let's be fair, this band is a 59.5+ band and they play for 10.000+ people per show.

You resent my assumption that you almost "hoped" they'd fail, but the way you look at it is as far from objective as my point of view. I'm critical too, but for Buck's sake, give them the credit they deserve. They make a million every night. People go home satisfied, so it seems.

No, they are NOT innovative anymore, Live.
No, Stevie's not in her best phase in her career, but who is after 60?
No, they should NOT have agreed to these ticketprizes, those are ridiculous.
No, they are NOT better live without Christine.

But given today's facts, it is quite an achievement to bring on a 2 hour and twenty minute show with this energylevel. I LOVE the fact that they play more vulnerable and raw than during the SYW-tour, and Mick, John and Lindsey kick major instrumental *ss.

They ARE having fun. At least 3/4th of the band.

I agree - moreover 90% capacity is pretty darn good inthis economy - not to mention it was DETROIT

True (I have been there) - but not all the peeps came from there  And, if they are auto execs in there, which is likely, they are hurting.

In any event, a 90% capacity crowd in likely the hardest hit city in the nation is not a bad shiow by any def. IMO.

Disaster? I don't know if I'd put it that way, but it's subjective & you're obvioulsy entitled to your opinion. When you consider the 3/17 Toronto show was announced several weeks after the 3/26 show in TO, I think it sold pretty well. Even if it was only about 2/3 full 3/17, the 3/26 show was close to (if not) sold out.
