No more workout songs

I've noticed that the Mac no longer do any of the "workout" songs. Songs like "Not That Funny" or "Sisters Of The Moon". "Rhiannon" is one these workout songs, but even it has been toned way down over the years. I have to say I am surprised that Lindsey still does what I consider to be one of his masterpieces, "I'm So Afraid" since that is one of the workout songs. BY workout songs I just mean the longer, tougher songs to pull off. I seriously doubt we'll ever see "Sisters" done live ever again. To do that song properly Stevie has to really put herself in a different frame of mind. I don't think she likes going there anymore.

michelej1 03-12-2009 12:56 PM

Well, you still have EO17 for her solo shows. That's a work out.

HejiraNYC 03-12-2009 12:59 PM

I think the live versions of "Go Your Own Way" and "Tusk" are kinda like "mini-workouts." If anything, I am glad that we didn't get more workout songs, e.g., "Come." They're just too long, too self-indulgent and kinda get grating after a while. And I know I will get lots of heat for this, but I don't think Lindsey is that kind of guitarist, i.e., a master improvisational musician who can do articulate, innovative fretwork for ten-minute stretches. Lindsey starts out strongly, but his solos tend to devolve into cliched, predictable licks and sloppy riffs, albeit, performed in a larger-than-life manner; it's definitely much more interesting watching him perform than to listen to him. Lindsey's strength lies in his ability to render short, highly-structured pieces, playing both bass and lead melodies, and providing sympathetic counterpoint to the lead vocal. But as a soloing musician? Not so much...

I'll trade your EO17 for four other short songs.

I'll see your 4 songs and ask you what other showstopper are we going to close the show with before the encore? Not Stand Back, because I'd rather drop Stand Back than EO17, wouldn't you? So . . . I guess enough people in the audience know I Can't Wait and Talk To Me or it could be Seven Wonders. Although Seven Wonders is more soothing and we need a "tear the house down" number right at the end.

Wild Heart would have been a contender back in the day, but not anymore.

I guess the only other optiions are Whole Lotta Trouble or something from RAL. In that case, the sad little audience would be leaving the venue disappointed and befuddled.

Don't they still do "World Turning." That's a major workout (compared with the rest of the set) for the players.

I don't know what it sounds like these days with all those peripherals (human & machine) onstage, but it used to be Lindsey's finest picking & Mick & John's finest drony pocket. Even Christine used to rise to the occasion, incorporating bits of Chopin into her riffs.

Rooms On Fire, I Can't Wait, Whole Lotta Trouble, Planets Of The Universe (extended version), No Spoken Word, & Long Way To Go would all be great closers before the encore, IMO.

Sistahs of the F**kin' Moon! I would toss folding chairs if I heard that.

you know what, stevie is not gonna do sisters of the moon again. sisters of the moon represents fleetwood mac at a certain point of their lives and they've moved on from that, and i think that's good. ACCEPT THAT. i'm so sick and tired of hearing people whine over sisters of the moon. get over it and be happy with what you got. a full set masterfully performed by sixty year olds! that in itself is awesome.

Take a chill pill, yo. We are just speculating on the Stevie Stock Exchange here. I think we have already accepted that SOTM is probably never going to be heard again, but the fact remains that it would hypothetically kick EO17's behind to the curb. Anytime. That's all...

I've never wanted to hear SOTM past the Mirage tour.

People wanted Storms and they got it. I think that was a wise choice. It's taken on a certain poignancy with Stevie being older. I don't care if they don't sweat it out onstage anymore. Lindsey's World Turning on the GoS tour was long enough for me.

Who's whining? He just said it would be a kickass closer.

I think Stevie would have kicked the sh** out of SOTM on the RAL tour. Stevie was a smidge manic, but still pretty much in control for the Mirage tour. But Mama was rip-off-the-Lee-press-on-nails batsh*t on RAL. It would have been a disaster (maybe), but it would have been hardcore!

Oh come on, everyone on here whined about Sisters of the Moon. It's all I heard about since the moment Unleashed was announced til the day of the first show, and even after the setlist was confirmed after the first show, all I saw was "so disappointed, no Sisters of the Moon." I mean honestly, if that's not whining what is?

macpai 03-12-2009 04:28 PM

I guess Oh Well would be an overworkout song. It was for me!

Stevie should sing SOTM in this tour.:lol::lol:

Ok, no jokes, but yeah she could sing it in a softer way like she's doing Rhiannon. Rhiannon of today is far different from the live album. and if it's because SOTM represents fleetwood mac at a certain point of their lives ... well something similar I read when people asked why Stevien didn't sing Sara anymore, however she started to sing it again since SYW tour. So... who knows if we hear it again some day.

No joking, I'd like to see SOTM (as I'd like 7Wonders, Affairs of the heart...) included in this tour but if it's not.. I'm glad with the current setlist.

Yeah, for the players. It doesn't do much for the audience. Michele

It must be one h*ll of a drag that this man still is screaching around your big Mama, isn't it? He's predictable, can't sing anymore, his guitarsolo's are boring, he's walking on that stage and noone in the world is understanding what he's doing there musically. Why the heck is this man in this band?

Don't forget the inevitable pawing of the guitar 4/5ths of the way through- you know, to show he's "on fire", and stuff.

starshine 03-12-2009 05:22 PM

I think this is an interesting topic....Personally , I wish Fmac & Stevie solo stuff for there tours/live stuff....I wish in there setlists that they would've been alot more spontanous......unfortunately there not....it is what it is.....I mean would it have been so hard for them to have sang some songs that aren't the 'singles' back in the day.....or 'b' sides or something not only to shake them up musically but for there fans. How cool would it have been if on Macs tour for Rumours they'd done.....well IDWTK or sang Crystal or during Tusk if than Stevie had sang Storms or BC back than.....or during Mirage sang That's Alright or Straight Back (although we have the one rehersal that we know of.....) or any of Lindsey or Christine's rare more unheard of songs....Now for Stevie solo....I think her best tour of songs was for the short BD tour.....heck she sang practically all of BD and than some. Like Blue Lamp & Gold & Braid.....Just think she could've added Sleeping Angel to the setlist or during WH she could've done...Violet & Blue or Garbo.....or WH itself....or Sable On Blond...RAL: The Nightmare/vocal version....RAL long version/One More BTR&RS/Battle of The Dragon/Mirror: Long Way To Go...this was a single and she didn't sing it...what a shameReal Tears/Doing The Best That I Can./etc.........so many options and opportunities lost....its sad they/Stevie solo had to get into some rut of a song list.....in the long run its really hurt them......but with saying that and it is IMO too.....it is what it & we can't change it....or it really won't change much.....so I guess we all will enjoy the past live vocals that we have.......at least thats something....or at least we have them.....from the 70's-now that is......just some thoughts......:nod:

You're whining about everyone else whining.

The only song I would give anything to hear/see live is Angel. I think Stevie could pull it off, I really do.

I completely agree that Angel would have been amazing this tour. I think the song is great for Stevie's current vocal range. I love the live version from the Tusk documentary, and I was so hoping to see how they would do it now. Second leg maybe?

Hi to everyone by the way, I'm new to the board!

A

Hmm. Yeah, maybe. I thought about that last night when I was watching the Tusk doc. If she ever did it again, nothing could top that performance, even though I'd like to see her try dancing the Charleston now. ;)

It's all you've heard about? OK. You haven't heard anyone talk about Storms? Or Go Insane? Or how they wish they'd do Little Lies or Hold Me? Are you only reading certain threads?

I agree, there were several posters in that opening night thread commenting on their disappointment that they didn't do SOTM - but there were also plenty of us posting "why did you think they were going to do SOTM in the first place?" People expressing disappointment does not seem like whining to me, but you're entitled to your opinion.
