SYW: standard or limited?

Hi everyone,

I am finally getting a copy of Say You Will, and I would like to know your opinions on which version to get.

Should I get the standard release, or the Limited Edition? What extras are included with the Limited? Is it worth it, in your opinion? I really like the cover to the standard, is that photo included in the LE?

Any additional info will be greatly appreciated!

michelej1 03-06-2009 12:44 AM

Yes, that cover picture is included in the Limited Edition. It's the first page when you open the book. Michele

I mean, the standard version is perfectly fine. But if you get the Limited Edition you get some live songs and some song by Stevie (forgot what it's called) and Lindsey's cover of Love Minus Zero...which I love. I love it more than the original (o.m.g. no she did not), but the live songs kinda suck to me. I hate Peacekeeper and I DESPISE Say You Will live. But maybe those are songs you enjoy...so go for it. It's probably $3 on Amazon at this point.;)

I really love Stevie's Not Make Believe.

Get the limited edition. And when you open it up and things fall out and the fold out picture won't fold back in the right way, throw it against the wall and stomp on it. That always works for me.

Michele

Not Make Believe...that's the name! Yeah, I liked it when I heard it but now I have forgotten it.

I really love Say You Will (the album, not the song). I think it gets a bad rap for no good reason. There are some really awesome songs on there and I guess I don't mind if it doesn't sound cohesive.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I've also seen a version that says 'DVD Audio'. What exactly is this, and is the type of audio the only difference? No video footage, right?

CADreaming 03-06-2009 07:34 AM

Get both. If you're a collector, it's worth it.

chriskisn 03-06-2009 07:48 AM

You too can hear Lindsey butcher a Dylan song...Why not indeed? You've heard Stevie do it, you've heard Dave Mason do it, and you've heard Billy Burnette do it. Now you too can hear Lindsey do it. :-)

P.S. Sorry I'm a Dylan purist...

Funny. I can understand, but I dig Lindsey doing that song.

Say You Will is a great album, so any version will do for the layman. However, for the Mac fan, it's more than just "having it all" to own the Limited Edition, it is to hear a totally knew and unexpected direction the band could have gone in. "Not Make Believe" has this drum thing in it that is just exhilarating and "Love Minus Zero" is positively shimmering -- the best produced song of the century.

kathy1 03-06-2009 08:20 AM

i never knew there was a limited edition of say you will.

Enchanted_Stevi 03-06-2009 10:54 AM

I have both of them...lol

mylittledemon 03-06-2009 11:39 AM

Def the limited edition, despite the higher price tag. The two extra songs (especially Lindsey's Dylan cover) are worth it.

Hmmm...but Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, The Byrds & Jimi Hendrix DIDN'T??? (according to your seemingly fickle standards for Dylan covers)

I think the "Limited Edition" isn't worth the extra bucks. Sure, the two extra studio cuts are nice to have (the live cuts are just redundant), but, I think they should've released the full DOUBLE disc set that Lindsey originally wanted as the "Limited Edition".

Ebay has the limited edition on there for a pretty good price.
check it out

I think the limited edition is absolutely worth it for Not Make Believe alone. I hate one of Stevie's strongest tracks in decades was relegated to b-side status though :distress: . Love Minus Zero/No Limit is great too. I'm not a fan of the Macsters doing covers, but this one is very likeable and tasteful.

Any guesses as to what extra songs that would have included?

iamnotafraid 03-06-2009 03:00 PM

There are four versions of "Say You Will",
not counting promo versions.

1. Pre-order version with autographed poster.

2. Standard version.

3. Deluxe Edition (2 CD).

4. DVD-Audio Edition. (Best sounding version by far, 2.0 or 5.1)

Means it will resurface one day just like Silver Springs did. Michele

In what way did Linds 'butcher' the Dylan track(s)? I accept that Stevie's cover on Street Angel didn't work as well as she might have wanted but I like what Buckingham did.

Villavic 03-06-2009 03:31 PM

R u a mac fan? Yes? Then buy the limited edition

R u not? Buy the standard

This forum is full of mac fans, so yo can see all fans choose the limited edition

Lindsey did not "butcher" it. The guy admitted he's a Dylan purist, so he probably can't hear anything without a biased mind. I think some of us can relate. Objectively, coming from someone who was raised on Bob Dylan's music and has been listening to him for most of my life at that, Lindsey's version is better to me. I love it more because of the pop sound. Dylan's sounds a little harder, but of course I love it. I mean, hell no do I love everything that Bobby has done...I'm not completely blind, but his great stuff can not be reworked to my ears. But this one can, and was, and I enjoy it immensely.

Don't know what extra Stevie tunes (other than "Not Make Believe") that would've been on it, but a track list that was discussed in an interview with Lindsey in Guitar Player magazine around the time of SYW's release also mentioned "Down On Rodeo", "I Am Waiting", & "Gift Of Screws"...the interview took place before the SYW final tracking was done.

I'm a "purist" of many artists, but I will admit when somebody does a cover that out-shines the original.

A few Dylan covers that bury Bob's original (or "Why does Bob use their arrangement when he plays these songs now?"):

My Back Pages - The Byrds
A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall - Leon Russell
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Eric Clapton
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
I Shall Be Released - The Band
Seven Days - Ron Wood

and, the best cover of a Bob Dylan song:

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - Eric Clapton (backed by Booker T & MG's)

I picked the Ltd edition version. I think I have 3 versions but not the dvd audio yet. Is it really worth it? I have the Rumours dvd audio....? Just wondering?
