Stevie's next solo CD: "An orchestrated record of...old standards."

This is a year old, but I saw it today for the first time.

Stevie on her next solo CD:
"An orchestrated record of some of the old standards...Etta James."
"I want to do it with David Foster."

Wow, we've talked about her doing that, but I never knew she was considering it. Nice find.

Yea, this is from March of 2007.

I think she got her "wish" of doing covers with the Soundstage CD.

Macfanforever 12-11-2008 08:30 PM

That sounds like Linda Ronstadt's album years ago.I really like to see her do a country record. She might get a better chance of more radio airplay on a country stations then on top 40 radio . unless she records a rap tune.also she make appearences on The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville like Jewel and Hootie and the Blowfishes Darius Rucker and some others.

Thing is, when is this going to happen??? Along with this idea, she's also mentioned wanting to do a Christmas album, a country album, a duets album......yet, it's been 7 and a half years since TIS!
If she goes into the studio with Fleetwood Mac after this tour (still up in the air, but a stronger possibility now that Stevie and Lindsey seem to be on the same track!), we probably won't see another solo album for AT LEAST three more years, which will put us at a DECADE between new releases!!!:distress:

Stevie has given us 3 new releases in 8 years (TISL, CV, Soundstage CD (in March '09), so i think she's doing just fine since all of that fits in between Fleetwood Mac's separate album/tour schedule.

Sorry, I don't consider a live album and her third greatest hits (in 15 years!) "New" material!

Second greatest hits...Enchanted is not technically considered a greatest hits

I don't know what people expect out of this women. She's 60 years old and has maintained 2 successful careers since 1981...she's not a machine.

But hey, new material with the Mac would almost be just as good, would it not?

TrueFaith77 12-12-2008 04:45 PM

Well I would LOVE to hear Stevie doing Etta James!!! But can she match Beyonce?

Do I expect a new album every two years like we had in the beginning? No!
Do I expect something other than a bunch of repackagings and greatest hits tours if she's to remain a vital and important artist? Yes!

Yes.....and no. While I really liked much of SAY YOU WILL, most of it seemed like two solo albums ~ albeit with a great rhythm section! ~ spliced together!
Plus, I just think Stevie's allowed to stretch more on her solo stuff ~ TROUBLE IN SHANGRI-LA, in particular, proved this.

This is true, but I would rather have even toned down Stevie than no Stevie.

GoldDustOrphan 12-12-2008 07:07 PM

Can Stevie match BeYAWNce? Of course.
Stevie's version of At Last is vastly superior to BeYAWNce's.
There's a great article from Vanity Fair calling Beyonce a fraud for claiming to be a songwriter. Ne-Yo called her to the mat for claiming to have written Irreplaceable.

Stevie isn't like all of these other artists out there who have these "Greatest Hits Volume 3" or "The Ultimate Collection" series of "best of" albums...Dolly Parton is a good example of that. But Stevie needed to release Crystal Visions to get her name back out there, and it sold quite well and it was packaged well too. Say You Will was a 3 year commitment, so after that endevour, Stevie wanted to do her own thing for a while, and she wasn't ready to jump right back into the studio. Now she's back with Fleetwood Mac for probably another 3 year commitment, and will most likely be back to recording new material by the summer.

Stevie herself has said she wants to do another original studio album, but with all the money and work that goes into a new studio album, and especially with the state of the music industry today, she'd be lucky if it went gold, which it most likely wouldn't.

My feelings exactly!! Given her age, and the waning future, you think she might be fired up (as Lindsey has been lately) to act more quickly and get some of these projects done efficiently. When she/they record an album or release a DVD it seems the process is barge-like. I wish she was open to new managment who would work to get her catalog upgraded and re-released (along with DVDS) . And I wish she would work with young fresh producers who could help her break out of the box and record in a new, more fastidious manner.

Although new music is most welcome, I would love to hear an album of standards by her. That seems like a tradition older singers do at one point or another. Stevie would be stellar in that genre. Her version of At Last is stunning. (I wish I could have seen the audience reaction to it!)

Artists create...regardless of whether or not it sells. Stevie doesn't need to sell millions anymore. If that is an artist's soul intention -- then Lindsey Buckingham's albums/career would never exist. I lament that she seems to have lost her muse to be an artist. If something doesn't sell a million or more....is it not viable???

She could scale down her expectations and have a great career at a level more than slightly above the scale of Lindsey's...with less expense and more focus on creativity. But alas, she mostly seems preoccupied with cashing in - with non-stop touring.

Lindsey didn't get back into recording/releasing solo albums until about 2 years ago, after a 14 year hiatus, so there is no comparison between the two of them, because she has a MUCH more extensive solo catalogue than Lindsey. Stevie also has a problem with (unlike Lindsey who could care less) about file sharing and people downloading songs for free. I think she has the right to put out a product that will do well for her, because that's what her expectations are.

It's also not as if Stevie has been sitting on her butt since 2005. She's been collaborating with other artists (she was a surrogate producer on Vanessa Carlton's album), and she's been touring and enjoying herself. If she had been in hiding for the past 3 years, i'd agree that she should've been working on something, but she's been doing her own thing and in a few months is about to release the first live album of her solo career, so i say bravo Stevie for being, probably, at the happiest point in her life.

I agree with you! But I wasn't comparing the volume of Stevie's output to Lindsey's. My issue is with creativy/artistry verses sales expectations. Do you think Lindsey thinks about sales figures when he is crafting his songs and albums? He, like Stevie, are living legends in their field. In many ways they worth more, above and beyond chart figures. Sure, they hope and want to see their music sell, but for Lindsey it doesn't hamper his inspiration for making music ---even knowing that it likely won't be busting up the charts. But he does know he has a very loyal and passionate fan base who love him.

Stevie has the same thing, on a much larger scale. It's really disheartning to for her to express apathy for not writing songs because they won't sell. She's right --they probably won't sell at the levels of the 1970's and 80's, because it's a different world now. But of course there is still a very viable market out there for her --she has a huge amount of loyal fans. Just because her albums aren't blockbusters anymore doesn't mean she can't make music. It's great that she's been having fun, but floating around dozens of ideas for decades and having none of it come to fruition is extremely perplexing.

I would absolutely love for Stevie to have Lindsey's vision of pure creativity and only base her work off of that, instead of worrying if the song or album is marketable. But that is what makes the two of them such polar opposites, and that's why we love them!

Crystal Visions had that awseome DVD with Stevie's commentaries and the Bella Donna Footage. And Soundstage is her first ever live album. I'm personally VERY happy to have both.

Have you ever heard Stevie sing "At Last"? It's revelatory--her performance was one of the most distinctive versions of the song.

I agree! Jaw-dropping. She so could excel in that genre, if just for a minor foray--and album and tour..and dvd..and... lol Beyonce comparisons? Who cares? It's a matter of different styles and flavors. Stevie would take such a powerful sage-like, husky, rock & rollish approach to the old standards. The prospect is fascinating.
