The Thing that You Miss Most About from the GoS Demos

In honor of all of the other, similar threads, I thought that I'd start one about the thing that you liked about the Gift of Screws demos that did not make it onto the official version.

I'd have to say that I liked the chorus of ToF better than TRPtF.

I think the demo as a whole was better than what came out on the record. A lot of the bass was cut out on the final product. Plus, all the extra guitar work in the background. And of course I will always love "twist of fate" SOOO much more than "Right Place to Fade", the former just has so much mystery behind it.

Peestie 12-10-2008 01:53 PM

I miss the lack of Stevie on most of the tracks that ended up on SYW.

What do you mean about the chorus of TOF v. RPTF? He cut the lead guitar in the first chorus and the loud, distorted rhythm guitar if brought way up to the front instead of the tremelo-ed rhythm one in the demo (which I guess I miss, even though it's still there). Apart from that it's exactly the same tracks used as in the "demo" but it's just mixed (slightly) differently.

Apart from the addition of Stevie to the SYW tracks and the remixing of RPTF and GOS all the tracks are exactly the same as the demo version except they've been mastered. All the mixes are exactly the same. GOS and RPTF are slightly different but not much.

I miss Given Thing.

Me too and Deep Dense.

Also, this is not related to GOS, but I miss the demo versions of My Little Demon. I think the entire mood of the song was changed for The Dance. I think the finished product was less gritty and wicked.

True. Although it still is a song from a auditive comicbook he once should release.

Tell me about it. Does anyone have Deep Dense, MLD, and (especially) GT demo 1?

I think also that he may have cut a synth from the chorus of TRPTF . ND OF COURSE HE IS STILL SAYING "Twist of fate"

Hmm, maybe he did. I'll have to go back and give it a closer listen but it's not something I noticed before.

I bought my friend a signed copy of GOS at the shows and he had never heard the demo of TOF before so he shouldn't hear "twist of fate" being sung so I'll ask him tomorrow if he thinks it sounds like that. I know we all think it still sounds like TOF (though I'm starting to sway my opinion) but I wonder if someone else who thinks he's singing RPTF will think it sounds more like TOF... I'll report back

I never noticed it until I went back and listened to it recently.

I think he says both at one point or another.

(Sorry about my last post's caps and gibberish and stuff, I have just learned not to post when I other people are near the computer)

LukeA 12-10-2008 09:20 PM

Two big ones.

I flat out refuse to listen to the SYW version of Say Goodbye- Stevie's vocal is obnoxious. While I understand the fact that the song's subject matter & overall sentiment made it a logical choice for a duet, for me, it just doesn't get any better than the GOS version.

Lindsey butchered Try For The Sun- not just by inexplicably removing the incredible guitar outro and final "mirror, mirror in the sky...", but also the change to the vocals on the chorus. In other words, he successfully neutered anything that would have made it stand out on UTS, where as it is now, it sounds almost identical to at least half the songs on the album.

stevierocks87 12-10-2008 09:35 PM

As a whole, I feel that the original GOS we had was Lindsey's best album, and almost would have prefered it to the songs changed and distributed amongst SYW, UTS, and the new GOS. The original TFTS was better, and what on EARTH were they thinking when they utterly drained the life out of Lindsey's solo "Peacekeeper"- It is ROCKIN'.

Well Peacekeeper wasn't part of the original Gift of Screws, but I agree they drained the life out of it for SYW. It's not just Steviem the whole song is just taken a down a notch for some odd reason.

While it's true that it wasn't on the leaked GOS CD, it was recorded in 2000, and was absolutely slated to be on the version of GOS that was to be released in early summer '01.

GoS 12-11-2008 09:41 AM

I haven't heard the Peacekeeper demo, but I have heard amazing things about it, an anyone share?

zzagar 12-11-2008 09:48 AM

Singer Not the Song. Not sure if it was even slated to be released with GOS, but I think it was recorded around that time...

I wouldn't mind some of the Stones covers as well. Lets face it, I Am Waiting is way better on Soundstage than on UTS... the ANGST is missing once he "softened it". (I still wouldn't mind hearing the full SYW demo version either).

Blue Turns To Grey would've been a nice addition to UTS.

Still no clear answer on the rumo(u)r that there's a recorded version of "She's a Rainbow"...

I think it was going to be on the disk And wasn't that a Stones cover too?

I really like the I am Waiting off of soundstage, but I think I may like the UtS better. (Didn't he change the lyrics for that performance?)

I don't have Blue Turns to Grey, does anyone have that? (Yes, I am going to keep asking for demos)

I miss the synth and crazy sounds he adds into the background on the demo. I think that extra "noise" really added to the song as a whole.

But really I cant complain, I just wanted any incarnation of that song to make a LB solo album!

It's not a demo- its fully mixed. It appeared on a couple different promo compilation CD's (GLAAD Dinner, Reprise sampler) that were distributed in Spring 2001.

Here's the song- http://www.yousendit.com/download/TT...eFh6RTkzZUE9PQ (320kpbs quality)

With these various new demos/songs, all of my life desires have been satisfied!

Given Thing is just as great, just as hard to understand as the other demo.
Blue Turns to Gray is one of the most beautiful songs by him, does anyone have the lyrics?
Deep Dense is fantastic, and has the EotW chord progression.
MLD is so haunting, I just love it.
Peacekeeper sends the SYW version crying home to mommy.

chiliD 12-11-2008 04:33 PM

"She Smiled Sweetly"

"The Singer Not The Song"

"Gotta Get Away"

Ok...those, TO ME, were the best of the Stones covers.

You know that "Blue Turns To Grey" is a Stones cover, right?

GoS 12-11-2008 05:02 PM

I just realized that. So I found them, thanks. I agree with your 1&3, but I wasn't too crazy about SntS.

My top three of the covers are the same as ChilliD's. Not sure which one's my favourite and even though I love them all I hope they end up as b-sides. I don't need them taking up the space of a new, original song on a new album.

It would be cool if Lindsey put out an EP CD with the Rolling Stones covers, and others.

YES. I'd love that song 100x more if Stevie wasn't singing on it.
I haven't heard the GOS version.. someone wanna put it up? :xoxo:

I want the movie now! haha! I want to hear this version of twist of fate and see if its a different mix! How I love that song.

billwebster 01-10-2009 08:11 AM

It's not that I actually miss anything from the demos on the album, but instead, I'm rather grateful for new songs like "Love Runs Deeper", "Underground", "Did You Miss Me", "Show You How", "It Was You" and a few more that he has put out since and which didn't come from those demo sessions.

"Deep Dense", "Gotta Get Away" and "Steve's Riff" still deserve to see the light of day, though. I don't mind too much that they are not released just yet because we can always lobby for them on this board, can't we? ;-)

What is this "Steve's Riff? I haven't heard of that.

D.W-Suite 01-10-2009 02:09 PM

Hello, could somebody please tell me where I could find a copy of the original GOS album to download?

I used to have it but sadly my computer got a virus recently and I lost absolutely everything:(

It's "Wear you down". Rocky. Funky. Sexy.

TrueFaith77 01-10-2009 03:51 PM

DEEP DENSE.

Wear You Down is awesome too...

And chiliD is correct on the Stones though I'd switch the order (assuming they were preferential).

Yeah, Lindsey's got plenty in the bag for the next solo or Mac album. :blob1:

Street_Dreamer 01-10-2009 06:13 PM

I will always be disappointed that Lindsey changed the course for the sound of Down On Rodeo. The demo version was almost perfect in my view. All it needed was to be "studioized" without the metronome. Unfortunately he chose to add drums and expand the sound of the song. If only he had kept it straight acoustic... to me, the demo of the song had much more impact and a sweeter, more longing sentiment. At least I'll always have the demo.

Matt

marinnette 01-11-2009 09:04 AM

ohh damn! links to the demo's download expired!!

Phil 01-11-2009 10:12 AM

Street Dreamer, I agree with everything you said regarding "Down On Rodeo". This is my favourite song from the GOS sessions and everything else he has released since but the over-produced, released version really detracts from the beauty and intimacy of the original demo. I always hoped this song would make the Say You Will album because I thought a harmony vocal from Stevie with an acoustic arrangement would have been completely gorgeous. This would also work extremely well live.
I must be one of the few who actually likes Stevie's harmonies on the SYW tracks but I agree that "Peacekeeper" should have been kept at the original tempo. I can't understand the choice to slow it down and in the process, suck the life out of it.
Lastly, my favourite version of "Say Goodbye" is from the Live In Boston concert dvd. I prefer this slightly slower arrangement and I think Stevie sounds divine.

Phil 01-11-2009 10:15 AM

PS My version of the "Down On Rodeo" acoustic demo is quite muffled. Does anyone have a crisp, clear version?
