Question about this performance?

Why does it sound like Stevie is still singing after the 7 minute mark?

strandinthewind 11-24-2008 11:24 PM

Something like

Every Night
All my life
All the time
Every Night

Haha. I don't think you understood my question.

When she walks away from the mic around the 7 min mark it still sounds like she's singing "I here the call of a nightbird." But she is clearly picking up flowers and gifts from the audience.

strandinthewind 11-24-2008 11:36 PM

I totally misunderstood :o

They dubbed in her album vocal on this song. Look at her lips when she sings broken hearted something within him

The vocal is indeed live...it sounds nothing like the studio track. However this is interesting! I never noticed this before...but then I haven't watched that VCR concert in a long time.

Not having the original video at hand to compare...well, perhaps this was clip was edited differently...or Stevie "sweetened" the vocals in post production. But the weird thing is...I think I would have noticed this discrepency in the original video. The clips on that video appear to be strictly live, without all the post-production crap that went on the Live At Red Rocks video.

Wasn't the 12th and 13th taped? I'm not clear on that. If that's the case, then they could be using footage from both nights - ala, Mirage video. Therefore, they could use audio from one night but video from the other.

If not, and this is probably more likely, then she overdubbed live vocals on this song. As a matter of fact, I can swear I hear Stevie singing the "lonely.....stillness" harmonies in Dreams. It just doesn't sound like Lori or Sharon. But the "off" factor is noticeable in Edge. Are there any audience recordings from the 13th?

This live version was also released as the B side to the studio version and got fairly decent radio play back then. So, maybe for that reason, she wanted it to sound as good as possible. Hence, the overdubbing.

We have audience recordings of both the 12th & the 13th.

baboles 11-25-2008 10:35 AM

And look at when she sings "He was no more than a baby then." When she sings "then" it doesn't look like her mouth is finishing the word. I tried to sing "then", just the word by itself and I have to move my tongue to get the "N" sound. Stevie didn't move her tongue at the end of the word "then".

A little post-production here and there. No biggie.

Yeah I know. But it bothers me sometimes. I sometimes wonder if we have ever seen a full live performance from the early years that hasn't been dubbed. I know the Largo 1983 show that is up on youtube wasn't dubbed.

I was crushed when I found out that Red Rocks was dubbed. And then I had to watch it over and check the whole thing. And the Tango In the Night DVD had Stevie adding in vocals. It sounded like there were freakin' two voices. Ughh!

I always thought the post-production work for the HBO special was probably more to fill out Sharon and Lori's sound. They had only sung a dozen shows at that point and there may have been a few clam notes that needed to be covered.

All those not-for-the-public tapings are pure & unadulterated Fleetwood Stevie Mac.

You can hear pure, unadulterated 1986 Stevie Nicks on the Westwood One radio broadcast of the June 8 New York show.

I think Cloaks And Daggers is pretty pure, unadulterated Stevie also.

Oh, it goes without saying that all the stuff recorded in the audience is unadulterated --- unless the sillies bring it home & start tampering with it using editing software.

Speaking of unadulterated vocals from the Rock A Little tour, the show from Madison Square Garden dated 8/5/86, is something to hear. She's in top form. "I don't really talk very much, I just sing mostly."

I have no live shows from the RAL era and I'd love a good one. Any idea where I can get this?

Here's the opening of the show at the Garden: www.sendspace.com/file/8l20il

I used to thrive on all these old audience tapes, but I can't listen to them anymore. I find the audio quality so bad that I'm just not interested, even if I think the performance is great (like at the Garden).

If you don't like the sound of the old tapes, you should seek out the radio broadcasts (there have been several) or the soundboard leaks. Audio quality on that variety is always better than the majority of audience-made tapes.

Stevie's 1986 gig in Weedsport NY was broadcast on the radio. It was taped June 20, & broadcast Aug. 15. It's not one of the better performances that year -- it's kind of bland, considering all her passion at shows like the Garden, the Forum, & Jones Beach, but it's radio b'cast quality, which makes up for a lot. Here's the opening: www.sendspace.com/file/348jpx

Many RAL shows here:

Weedsport is a good quality boot, but bit of a disappointment performance-wise - she's off-key and the ad-libs don't quite work out. The Chicago show, aka Cloaks and Daggers, is also decent quality, as is the Sydney show from October of 86.

I agree that some of the audience boots are really difficult to listen to. You have to give your ears time to adjust - and even then, it can be pretty harsh. I still think it's worth it, though, just to get a taste of how off the hook some of these (and WH tour) performances were - there has never been anything like it since.

PS> The Chicago show is listed as Poplar Creek, IL in the link above.

She was there on both the 7th and 8th of June. Not sure which one that is. Thanks for that link.
