Twilight - just back from advance screening.

Boring, but hundreds of thousands of teenage girls will find it finger-lickin' good.

75 minutes of exposition, telling us what we already know. Then, out of nowhere, it remembers that movies usually require some sort of conflict, so it introduces one. That lasts for about 20 minutes. A 10-minute epilogue closes the film.

HAHA...bummer, I was kind of looking forward to it.

David 11-19-2008 10:59 AM

Is this the film that Kirk Cameron made?

gretchen 11-19-2008 12:13 PM

Okay, are there any fangs in it or do they just do the eye thing? I hate it when they never show any fangs, so stupid!

fangs

And, to delve in further on the vampire fang subject, fangs are supposed to be the canines, not the incisors or bicuspids or any weird combinations of teeth. Okay, I'm done jacking this thread. :p

GoldDustOrphan 11-19-2008 01:32 PM

The movie is fang-less.

gretchen 11-19-2008 01:36 PM

I'm sorry, but that is a let down (for me). I have to see the movie though before I say I dislike it.

I did read half of the first book. The movie follows it pretty faithfully.

I just don't understand why the vampires go to high school. They live in a beautiful house that is buried in the woods far away from anyone else. They stick to themselves. They could just say that they're home-schooled if ever seen. Direct sunlight doesn't kill them, but it reveals their true appearance. The town is shrouded by clouds, but the vampires don't go to school if it's sunny, but what if the clouds cleared mid-day? By going to school they risk more exposure than by sticking to their home tucked away in the forest.

Adults in the audience laughed openly during the film's silliest moments - and there were many. The white pancake make-up on the vampires was ridiculous.

The best vampire movie of the year is Let the Right One In. Actually, it's just one of the best movies of the year.

An U.S. remake is already underway.

TrueFaith77 11-19-2008 02:32 PM

I will see Twilight because I thought the director, Catherine Hardwicke, made an extraordinarily sensitive work with Lords of Dogtown -- so I'm hopeful she'll be able to bring that insight into youth culture into the vampire genre (but her first film, Thirteen, and her Virgin Mary film were kinda stinkers).

That said: I don't like vampires. That sorta thing is not cool to me.

As far as vampire movies go, I would say the best I know are Vampyr and Nosferatu (for the classics) and in the modern era, two visionary works: Ganja & Hess and Near Dark -- rent them immediatey!!! I also happen to find Vampire In Brooklyn to be very interesting and entertaining.

GoldDustOrphan 11-19-2008 02:35 PM

Leftover the release party, I have 200 of these rubber Twilight bracelets and about 100+ small-size movie posters. I don't know why Summit never sent any full-size posters.

That is like the book. Nothing really happens other than Bella going to school every day and seeing Edward and the two of them staring at each other. Finally in the last 100-150 pages of the book there is some sort of plot and excitement and then it ends. I'm not interested in seeing the movie after reading the book.

All I have to say is...Anyone see the new "South Park" episode last night? Definitely related to the whole 'vampire' schtick.

GoldDustOrphan 11-20-2008 11:19 AM

South Park, as usual, was genius.

I love that the Goth kids burned down Hot Topic hoping it would make the Vamp kids go away.

Of course, all of the out-of-control autograph sessions for Twilight were sponsored by Hot Topic. I love how South Park is able to react immediately to current events.

fleetwoodtrick 11-20-2008 05:09 PM

I absoutely LOOOOVE the Twilight series! I'm going to go see the movie w/ my friends on Saturday. :D I turn 15 on Sunday!

Saw the movie today. It was a bit disappointing, but parts of it, I enjoyed quite a bit.

Bad:

Not enough of the Cullens.
The high school kids acted more like middle school kids. Or...perhaps because I'm 32, I am not remembering well how HS kids act. LOL
Some of the acting was silly.
The direction was not good, too choppy and messy. Needed tightening up and better flow.
If I hadn't read the book first, some of the movie would be confusing.
Jacob's wig...ACK! LOL
No fangs! Barely any blood!
Too many wierd camera movements and swirliness.

Good:

Robert was good as Edward and Kristen good as Bella.
The scenery was gorgeous.
The kid playing Jasper...excellent. He said maybe 5 lines the whole movie, but his facial expressions were spot on since he was supposed to be in agony.
Dude playing Bella's dad...perfection.
The bedroom kiss...HOT.
The dream Bella had....a little blood and biting...YAY!! Vampire stuff FTW! LOL

I hope they get more money for the next one. They will need it, for those who know what I'm talking about. ;) Oh and get another director...PLEASE.

I'm reading New Moon right now (halfway done) and can't wait to read the other 2 and Midnight Sun.

I took my nieces to Hot Topic last year and was kind of shocked to see the store manager was a young woman with a tattoo on her arm that read, "drink from me and live forever". I remember I thought to myself later, "just because she thinks she's a vampire now, who is to say she will always feel that way" and I hoped it was a fake tattoo. It looked very authentic, though. She is either going to have to be a vampire forever, or have some explaining to do down the road. I guess if she IS a vampire though, it would be for forever right?

Heh. True. Twilight is Vampire Lite. You don't get the nasty stuff involved with vampires like fangs and blood drinking.

Vampires for Kids! LOL

I like seeing vampires vamp out, the eye changes, fangs coming out, make-up showing their eyes sunken in and that palor to the skin. But, I realize that's not very romantic, so Stephanie cut that out in the books and it's not in the movie much either. We are TOLD that Edward and his family are dangerous, but not really shown, except a lightning fast moment at the very beginning with the deer.

That's why I love Moonlight so much. We get to see vampires be what they REALLY are. Even though Mick struggles with it, he still fights, vamps out, etc.

A better choice would have been, "creature of the night".

TrueFaith77 12-02-2008 01:46 PM

I loved the movie! It was amazing, if not, alas, great. Catherine Hardwicke is the perfect director for this: nothing in the book compares to the moment Bella enters Bio class in the film... Edward -- repulsed -- winged like an angel (flanked by a stuffed owl), Bella -- self-conscious -- her hair billows against the fan. The danger of sexuality, the grace of Desire. Beautiful. The film is full of that stuff (I don't know why people call this exposition!?!? What more conflict do you need? It's the later "conflict" that seemed not quite to work for me, but all was made right by that heartbreaking prom scene. Killed me.) I hope Hardwicke continues so that she can work through the ideas she introduces. It was like My So-Called Life with Godfather ambitions. In that tradition, I hope Part II will be better.

TrueFaith77 12-08-2008 11:35 AM

Bad news for me.

Yes, the great Elliot Davis deserves A LOT of credit. I have no doubt the editor might as well. But only one person could have gotten those performances from those actors. This is a real shame. Oh well, here's hoping Kathryn Bigelow or Neil Jordan or Patrice Chereau (omg!) will be hired.

i love this whole swirling Twilight euphoria. my eighth graders are obsessed and just about anything that makes reading cool is fine by me. i went on opening night at the behest of two-dozen fangirls and really enjoyed it. it must be reminiscent of the Beatles on ed sullivan - counting down until show time, groaning when each preview came on, shrieks when the lights went allthewaydown, hysteria when he walks into the cafeteria, screeching and giggling for the kiss... not annoying at all, but i love these kids anyway.

haven't read the books (tough grad school semester) but have been schooled by the kids. from what they've told me, the film does the book justice and is definitely vampire-lite. good. thirteen-year-olds don't need to be reading smut like i was.

"Drink from me and live forever" is the tag for Interview With The Vampire. a fantastic series and great storytelling, but not necessarily youth-appropriate. that movie came out when i was in eighth grade and i was obsessed. was and still am. and had i not had the willpower, i'd be sporting vamp ink, too. the kids think i'm goth because i wear dark nail polish? they have no idea...

so Twilight, though a lot of us have found faults, is the best thing to come along for these kids in a while. i'm glad they have it. and i'm glad that went. and edward is hott. :wavey:

GoS 01-05-2009 12:47 AM

Well, I have heard so much about this that I decided if I had the chance, I would go, just to see what it what about. I actually liked the movie, more than I thought I would. I just don't see how this gets the mega-appeal that it has (But I would never complain about people reading more). One thing though, I was disappointed that they set it up so that Edward would have to suck out the venom, as this was early in the series and it proves that he is strong enough to resist/stop. That removed that tension. Oh, and the fact that the "T" in "Twilight" wasn't capitalized during the title slide annoyed me .

I loved Twilight & Let The Right One In, the books and the movies, there's no comparison because they're nothing alike, except for the word Vampire.

Was just pointing out that the target audience for Twilight - i.e. young teens - would not know what to do with Let the Right One In when it was mentioned by GoldDustOrphan as being the best vampire movie of the year...which Twilight would not be.

I am sure there are people such as yourself that enjoyed both - but target audience doesn't mean "everyone," no worries.

David 01-13-2009 11:07 AM

Is this mooie about a blood-suckin' vampire?

It just is that Twilight while revolving around vampires, is not a story about vampires. it is a love story first. I just started the second book, hope its good, i liked the movie alot, and enjoyed the first book.
