Tattoos?
Im currently lookin for ideas, i'm planning to get one soon. It's a choice between a crescent moon, tiny stars or a dragon ( although i've heard that it's bad fortune to have a dragon drawn onto your body) on my ankle. Does anyone here have a tattoo?

Hey Remy,
I am all tatted up! Check out my Flickr page and you'll see. =) Best piece of advice I can give you is, A) put it in a place you won't have to look at it often (if its your first one), like your shoulder blade. That way in case you arent happy with it, you dont have to see it. and secondly, pick a design you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that you love. |
Niiice! I love your tattoos. Too bad that many dont (usually) look well on a girl. Which one was the most painful to do? And is there anything you regret about them?
|
Tats are really cool, but I'd be careful about what you pick, and where you get it.
They are permenant and even laser removal does not completely remove them from your body. And if you get one in a noticable place, it could be hard to get jobs, as many companies still forbid tats showing. [Ankle should be fine though] I'd go with the crecent moon though ;) I want to get the 'Greatest Hits' flower on my lower back, but I'm still thinking about it. From what I've heard they are painful, esp in certain places, so as I've stated, and Brandon has, think it over. Don't make a decision you'll regret. |

The other thing I regret is sizing. Tattoos look great when blown up. For example...the flower from the Mac's Greatest Hits album is on my arm...and its the size that it is on the CD cover. It wouldve looked ten times better if it was blown up 2x it's original size. So in this case (as is often) bigger is better... Many tattoo artists are quick to just say "OK" and assume you've done your research and that you know what you want. In terms of pain? Well honey, they all hurt. Every single time, they hurt. The most painful place for me, it seemed at the time, were my thighs and calves. |
About the pain... i don't wanna know how bad the one on your forearm (i think; the maori one) must've hurt - it looks huge.
i always though this one is subtle & pretty... and the location is nice, too. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l1...4/backneck.jpg |

On the other hand, don't go not getting a tattoo because of fear of employment. If that is your only deciding factor, then f*ck them. Having a tattoo is not indicative of the kind of person you are, employee you are, or the quality of work you put forth. |
I'm not sure if I mentioned this once before, so pardon me if I'm repeating myself. I have a tattoo on my upper arm of the Hindu symbol of 'Om'. I thought it was cool and deep when I got it in 1998, and perfectly fitting with my whole life with my then partner who was a Hindu from Sri Lanka, and a journey I was taking into Eastern religions. I didn't regret it at all, until I left him in October 2006. Now, I have this relic on my arm and it feels odd especially since I met my great love Humberto in June of this year. Maybe one day, if I have extra money, I'll have it lasered off. I'm not really feeling the mysticism of the 'Om' anymore. I've lost interest in it all, to be honest. Hard feelings perhaps, of how things turned out with my ex. I want to move on. If it was Mickey Mouse or a flower-wrapped tamborine, I'd be perfectly fine with it. But because it's written in my ex's language (Tamil) it is a constant reminder.

The only time that names of loved ones are acceptable, I think, is if it's family and/or your children. |

My wife has three tattoos, two of which she wants to get removed. She wanted to get one of our son's name across her shoulder, and I was thinking "yeah, that's sexy, everytime I see you undressed I'll be staring straight at a reminder of the kids." LOL! |
IMO all good advice. i would have to feel very strongly about something to have it inked in a highly visible place, but i also would never try to hide ink on some obscure body part. say it loud and proud!
the stupidest thing i've seen in recent days is a friend's new "tattoo" of one .5" star near her armpit. and apparently there's no real significance, just wanted a little ink. it's not like a drop of stevie's sweat hit her on that spot at a concert. ;) i have two and am trying to temper the ink-lust for many more. this one is on my back - probably 10" and not surrounded by red swirlies. i spent six hours of my eighteenth birthday in the chair for that one. ten years later it still looks good - no fading or breaks in the lines. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/xxxmx/neilav2.jpg and last year i had the orion constellation inked in "freckles" on my forearm. this photo was taken later that day, so it looks very different now - just like freckles. longsleeves for two weeks afterward because it looked like a collection of track marks. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...x/DSCN2978.jpg i think i'm going to add a "frame" around the dragon. incorporate a few smaller images so i don't have random things splattered around this skin. a medieval phoenix, manuscript letters from the book of kells, the FM greatest hits logo, an allusion to anne rice's vampire chronicles, a coin, buddhist imagery, a crescent moon (dad wants to get a matching sun). those things would look bunk dotting my body, but i think if i get a good design going, those could all work nicely together. if you're looking for ideas, i suggest looking around your room. of the things i just listed, all have very real meaning to me. from here with my laptop, i can see my books, artwork, photographs, decor, and all of it is meaningful to me - enough to want to carry it around proudly. not passing through phases. good luck to you, and great ink to all. |

Everyone has given great advice here.
I have two right now - one on my right calf and the beginning of what will be a huge piece covering my whole back. As a rule, they tend to hurt more "over bone" but it varies for everyone. The one on my calf was fine until we got closer to my ankle and then it got uncomfortable, but the lettering across my shoulder blades ended up kind of soothing in an odd way. Even though the piece on my back will be enormous when it's done, it's something I can show off or cover up when necessary, which is good. And even though it's in its very first, basic stages, it catches the eye a lot when I let it show. I had a trillion people at various events over the summer stopping me to "read" my shoulders, lol. They'd say, "What's that mean?" and I'd say, "Universal truth, kids. Universal truth." ;) |

I have three tats. I have a music staff with the riff for "I'm So Afraid" that goes from my chest to the end of my shoulder blade. I have my daughter's name in a tribal and more music notes on my wrist. I love getting them. They do hurt if you are not use to getting them. It also depends where you are putting it on yourself. It's just knowing your pain tolerance. :]

Mind you it's art. If you are a musician this is backwards. Also it's for the exact lines of
