Poll: Favorite LB Solo Album
Now that Gift of Screws has had some time to sink in, I thought this would be interesting. I don't know, maybe this has been done before.
|
The real test will be how much we like GOS after a year or so. Will it stand the test of time? Well, aside from the fact that some of the songs are alredy over 10 years old:laugh:!

As much as I LOVE Gift of Screws, I feel as if Out of the Cradle can never be beaten. Its just amazing from beginning to end.

For me it was between L&O or GOS.
GI has my favorite ONE song, but the other two are stronger albums as a whole. Honestly, OOTC is not on heavy roation in my iTunes like the other 3. I like UTS live, not so much album versions. |
Am I really the only one who is feeling the UTS love? That is one of my all time favorite albums!! Why has no one else voted for that? Maybe it is just that that was my first LB experience.
|
To answer this question would be an impossible task.
Although I could say that I know which one is not my favourite. OOTH, GOS and UTS are all favourties in their own way. Its a very Mood Dependant question. So I didnt vote because tomorrow that might not be what I would choose |
It's kind of a toss up between Out of the Cradle, UTS and Gift of Screws for me. GOS is too new for me to make that judgement yet. So between OOTC and UTS...OOTC edged out Under the Skin.
|
Feck it I voted for Screws, I think its Lindseys Best Album.
I wish though he could have put a few more songs on to the cd though. Got to Get Away, Given Thing and Wear you Down really would have been a great addition to the existing ten songs. |
I voted LAW & ODOR. It's always been my favorite owing to its cartoonishness & kazoos. I also think it demonstrates an ebullience in recording (the act itself rather than the technology) that the other albums don't fully have. I also prefer Lindsey's voice at that time -- a hillbilly with immense tonal control.
Finally, L&O has the most interesting cover & sleeve art. |

David, how many times does he say Mary Lee Jones ...... hahahaha I love the ramblings and stylings... all over this album... |
Out of the cradle definitely for me - it's perfect.
|
His 1st three albums were splendid!!
Listened a few times to GOS. Don't have an opinion yet as it needs more time... I just got it... |
Got to say OOTC. It's the most serious work he's done and you can tell he put the most effort into it. It all works as a cohesive unit the best, besides UTS. GOS is great, he just didn't put as much effort into it as OOTC. The ORIGINAL GOS would have been by far his best, but it was cannibalized.
|
I'd have to say Out of the Cradle, but GOS comes up very close behind. Under the Skin was also a very good album, but not quite as good as OotC.

But one of my best friends happens to LOVE UTS. I've given her every LB solo album, including GOS and, though she admits that she enjoys many of the songs on them, her favorite still remains to be UTS. She loves the acoustic quality and she thinks his songwriting is extremely strong on it. I think it's strong on all of them...maybe less so L &O but who am I to judge?:o |

I was never crazy about Law and Order. I mean, I like Trouble, It was I is chatchy, and how can you not like That's How We Do It It In LA, but the album as a whole never seemed too amazing. But that is just me. No one who reads this board can claim to have any sort of "normal" musical tastes, we all like Lindsey Buckingham . |
This is too tough. GoS is too new for me. Love UtS but I picked what the majority did.

The way I see it, Out of the Cradle is an incredible album... if it was released in 1986.

All of Lindsey's solo albums are interesting and rewarding. He is, to my way of thinking, the most artistically successful of all FM artists gone solo. He may not be the most lucrative or commercially viable, but all of his records have moments of genuine power and energy. I was initially disappointed with UTS and still feel it is his weakest effort, but even then it has exceptional moments.
OOC is flawless... Law and Order runs it a close second, in my book. But I'll have to give GOS a listen. Go Insane was so underrated. |
Don't kick me to hard... I am new to this board...
This is such a hard decision… OOTC was such a breath of fresh air… and some of the songs hit the easy breezy sound that LB is so good at. Soul Drifter is a dream… and only days floating in a boat off the Florida Keys could compare…and it has.... and the guitar open to/and Don’t Look Down… yikes! OOTC WAS the quintessential 90’s breezy sound that he had defined for the 70’s . It’s always the feeling he does in a song that makes the song so right. And that is what he does. I could care less about the “production” or if a metro dome ( is that what it is??? The rum is getting to me now) was used… it’s what the sound evokes! And here comes the 2000’s with UTS… Oh my… regardless of what songs made it to which album, albeit FM or solo, they found their way when they needed to be heard. I found UTS to be the most intense, personal album – be it the lyrics or the sparse instrumentation-- or the video on the DVD – and by the way, if you didn’t look down or pull to sheet over your head out of shear compassion or sickened by the current state of the record industry or on some of the latter scenes of him talking on the phone about WHO would actually distribute to album, you’re nuts…. Well… I thought that whole documentary WAS part of the actual album… UTS was cohesive and brilliant… and showed WHO LB is/ was/ is … as should any work of art should. It is whole. Then there is GOS…. So many songs that I absolutely love! Twist of Fate – sorry, Right Place to Fade, is just too cool… And Great Day will always remain a fabulous memory – ( side note: I got a confirmation on my first Obama gig, literally seconds before I popped in my GOS CD and Great Day blasted out of my car speakers. It was a great day!) Anyhoo… Of course there is always “a line" and "thought cohesiveness ” that runs thru an LB album – the esoteric meaning always catches my ear, lyrically or otherwise, GOS has some… but not as much as UTS…. So the disagreement of catchy tunes that tap your toe with a grain a linear thought….. or…… the artist’s cohesive vision of pouring out their soul thru lyric and sound…… hmmmmmmmm…. He did say, ”Follow the sound” Decisions, decisions…… But as the ole’ American Bandstand’s collective tally was… “ It had a good beat and…..” Oooppsss… time for a refill…:woohoo: |

GoS is my favourite, even though it's a little on the short side. I can hear the best of his other albums in it -- Time Precious Time could have come from Under The Skin, Gift of Screws is a bit Go Insane and songs like Underground represent OOTC. (I can't comment on Law and Order since I don't actually own it :o) It's just brilliance from beginning to end, there isn't one track I'd skip. |
For me, GOS wins out over OOTC by quite a stretch, because it's much more consistent, has more strong songs per total album length.
|
Personally, I liked Gift of Screws the best, though Out of the Cradle follows up very closely behind.
|
Go Insane!!!!!
|
Seriously, why does everyone seem to love Out of the Cradle so much? It was one thing when all we had were two "uneven" unpolished experimental albums and OOTC, but now we have two additional albums that also *far* outpace that dated POS. I mean, are there people out there that actually think, for example, that "This Is The Time" is a better song than "Wait For You"?

Right now, I am feeling GOS more, but that is probably because it is new. I feel OOTC is rather timeless. Michele |

Probably Out Of The Cradle. But I always thought Go Insane was rather wonderful.
I think Gift Of Screws has some of his best individual songs. It doesn't hang together as an album as well as Out Of The Cradle though. Or even Under The Skin. |
Law and Order is experimental and silly at times.
Go Insane is personal and emotional. Sad/lonely. Out of the Cradle is whole and satisfying Under the Skin is mature and complete and the words express deep felt emotion Gift is Screws feels incomplete (would have liked to hear a few more songs) but thoughtful. It ends too soon, just as you are really getting in to it. OOTC/UTS are a tie for me. |
GOS. The key to good music for me is actual musicianship, and I feel that the songs on GOS exhibit more and better musicianship than most of Lindsey's other material.
|
Well, I'll just list mine in order here:
Joint 4th: Under the Skin and Law and Order. For me, these Lindsey albums just don't have the same replay value as the others do. I listened to L&O repetitively like I did to all his albums when I first got them, but now I kind of find it a bit grating. UtS, was a slightly unexpected album, I come back to it for some of the amazing guitar playing moreso than the actual songs, if anybody else can relate to that. 3rd: Go Insane. Love every song on this album, this is the one album of his where I have to listen to it through from start to finish each time I put it on, and I've never lost interest in doing so yet. 2nd: OotC. Favourite until GoS, no need to explain anything here. 1st: GoS. My favourite memory of this was actually when I gave a friend of mine a listen of LRD on the bus one day. He nearly cried when he heard it  He was so overcome that Lindsey "still had it". But yeah, it's just a rocking album, can't really explain why I prefer it to OotC. Just floats my boat a bit better I suppose :blob2: |
Out of the Cradle is a masterpiece.
But Gift of Screws came out the day of Lindsey's concert in San Diego. That was a special moment for me, because of the people that I spent it with. So, those two are my fav's. |
favorite lb album
I would say GOS, but in my mind I look at UTS and GOS as two parts of a double album. Like what the Foo Fighters did with In Your Honor
GOS is the more main line electric one and UTS the acoustic/experimental. I always thought that if Lindsey could have done what he wanted to, he would have released them together as one large project. The track order might have been different though. :) |

Yes, there are. And yes, it is. To me. |

Screws!
I like all his albums. But GoS was the first one in which he didn't feel like he was "experimenting." It seemed like he had fully inhabited his rock style and was just going for it. The laughter in the title song says it all. He was always too calculated and/or restrained to do that sort of thing before. I love that maniacal laughter.
