GoS Song Ranking
For me, Gift of Screws is the best solo album Lindsey has made with the exception of Out of the Cradle. I can honestly say I've never heard a song like "Great Day" before; to my ears, that track is almost like a whole new kind of music of its own, although I guess it does have a little (but only a little) in common with a couple of the tracks from Go Insane. Between "Great Day" and the rocking title track, Gift of Screws is one of the best albums I've heard this year.
Even though it's only been our for a few days, I'm curious how everybody would rank the songs on Gift of Screws, from their favorite to least favorite. For me, it's like this: 1. Great Day 2. Gift of Screws 3. Underground 4. Right Place to Fade 5. Wait for You 6. Bel Air Rain (top 3 lyrically, bottom 3 musically) 7. Did You Miss Me 8. Love Runs Deeper 9. Time Precious Time 10. Treason What does everyone else think? Ken |
I'd have to say:
1. RPTF 2. Wait for You 3. Great Day 4. Bel Air Rain 5. Treason 6. GOS 7. Did you Miss Me 8. Underground 9. Love Runs Deeper 10. Time Precious Time I'd like to compile a "Gift of Screws" collection with ALL of the songs from SYW, GOS the two from UTS and the rest of the missing GOS tracks. |
Quote:
1. Underground 2. Twist of Fate... The Right Place to Fade 3. Shuffle Riff... Wait For You 4. Gift of Screws 5. Bel Air Rain 6. Did You Miss Me 7. Time Precious Time 8. Love Runs Deeper (The Chorus would do better without the verses) 9. Great Day 10. Treason The first six are almost tied, I love them all so much. This album is one hair beneath OOTC in my all time ranking (UTS is my all time #1). This album definitely lived up to the expectations that the demos set for it. My only complaint (and to only have one on an entire Lindsey album is saying a lot) it that there is no Given Thing or My Little Demon, these would have been a perfect match. Well, there is always next time... |
Well, Treason is #9 and Time Precious Time is #10. I really can't rank the rest. They all are pretty much up there at #1 or #2.
Michele |
1. Great Day - Just think it's an awesome track and reminds me of songs on Go Insane, which I think is my favorite Lindsey solo album (it's hard to choose!)
2. Gift of Screws - I admit, I'm surprised how high this ranks. I've had it for quite some time, always loved it, but even of the original GOS tracks out there, it was never my top favorite. But I can't get enough of it now. The maniacal laughter is addictive and I crack up every time. 3. Love Runs Deeper - Great song, the last minute or so is absolutely sublime. 4. Time Precious Time - I agree with a poster who said that this song makes them feel like they are being lifted up. I feel like I'm getting some kind of calming massage, or being gently pelted by small comforting cushions, whenever I listen to this. It's very zen and brings me to a peaceful, zoned out place 5. Bel Air Rain - I like the feel of this song and especially like Lindsey singing along with his guitar part at the end. 6. Wait For You - Such a fun journey this song takes us on! 7. Right Place to Fade - I am still convinced he is saying Twist of Fate! 8. Underground - Whenever this song comes on, I think I don't actually want to listen to it and then the guitar on the chorus kicks in and I'm sold. 9. Did You Miss Me - Still not feeling this song too much. I can see why some people love it, though. 10. Treason - Just hasn't grown on me at all yet, though I do like it. There are no songs on this album I actively dislike, and I flat out love at least the top 6, possible Top 7. Such a strong album! |
While I will accept that he might be saying "right place to fade" sometimes in the song, I am convinced that he also says "twist of fate." I heard the "t" on his tongue. I am not crazy. Don't gaslight me Lindsey Buckingham. You are no Charles Boyer!
You know, oddly enough, none of the GOS songs on this album are the ones I listened to. It's really strange how that worked out. I was into Deep Dense, Given Thing, Wear You Down and some of the songs released on previous albums, but I wasn't into any of the ones on the new album, so they all sound fresh. What a revelation. Michele |
1-Underground--hands down. No real reason other than it's beautiful.
Tied at second... Wait for You, Treason, Time Precious Time Tied at third... Right Place to Fade, Did You Miss Me, Love Runs Deeper (yeah, I jumped on the bandwagon somewhere along the way) Tied at fourth Great Day, Gift of Screws Last... Bel Air Rain But, being on the bottom doesn't mean much. I listen and enjoy them. Just not as much as the others. It really is a good album. I'm not crazy about Bel Air Rain, and I think it's a combo of the lyrics and me trying to figure out where the hell I've heard all of that stuff before. But, it's not bad. |
1. Great Day
2. Gift of Screws 3. Right Place to Fade 4. Love Runs Deeper 5. Wait for You 6. Bel Air Rain (top 3 lyrically, bottom 3 musically) 7. Did You Miss Me 8. Time Precious Time 9. Treason 10. Underground |
My favs in this order:
1. Wait for You 2. Great Day 3. Bel Air Rain 4. Gift of Screws 5. Right Place to Fade 6. Underground 7. Treason 8. Love Runs Deeper 9. Did You Miss Me 10. Time Precious Time |

1. Right Place to Fade
2. Great Day 3. Underground 4. Love Runs Deeper 5. Wait For You 6. Time Precious Time (I've never had an issue with it and think the studio version is beautiful) 7. Treason 8. Did You Miss Me (can't believe it's so low, but I guess the over-playing had something to do with that) 9. Gift of Screws 10. Bel Air Rain (This is at the end simply because I haven't listened to it that much, so in comparison to the others it's not in the forefront of my adoration) This album is really special. Individually, I could take any of these songs and enjoy their brilliance, where as his last album I'd say was more meant to be a cohesive unit. With the exception of Show You how and It Was You, I had to really listen to it all the way through to appreciate it's beauty. |
1. Love Runs Deeper
2. Did You Miss Me 3. Wait For You 4. Treason 5. Right Place to Fade 6. Underground 7. Time Precious Time 8. Great Day 9. Gift of Screws 10. Bel Air Rain |
Here is my ranking. Wonder if it will change a month or two from now:
1. Right Place To Fade (good to hear LB rocking again) 2. Love Runs Deeper (I could go back and forth between the top two being my favorite on the album, but when the chorus kicks in on this song, it totally moves me) 3. Treason (this song is really growing on me. Gorgeous melody, possibly my favorite lyrically) 4. Did You Miss Me 5. Underground 6. Wait For You 7. Gift Of Screws 8. Great Day 9. Time Precious Time (the chorus is too repititious for me, but the guitar playing is stunning, and even more so if you can watch him play it live) 10. Bel Air Rain (this song has not clicked with me yet) |
I like every track on here except TPT. Treason would be my next 'least favorite'.
I LOVE Love Runs Deeper, Gift of Screws, and Did You Miss Me. Thats about as much ranking as I can do. |

I still think SYH was a career masterpiece and I'm sad to think I might never hear it in concert again. But I am thankful for the Bass Hall DVD. Michele |

And It Was You is awesome. I loved it live. I think it's sweet and I'm sure years from now when his children are grown up it'll have a special place in their hearts, nostalgically speaking. |

Here's mine Ken, 1) Bel Air Rain 2) Wait for You 3) Did You Miss Me 4) Underground 5) Treason 6) Love Runs Deeper 7) Right Place to Fade 8) Great Day 9) Gift of Screws 10)Time Precious Time The latter 3 songs are kind of a tie for me, in terms of dislike. |
This may be hard... :)
1. Wait For You 2. Great Day 3. Gift Of Screws 4. Right Place To Fade 5. Did You Miss Me 6. Bel Air Rain 7. Underground 8. Treason 9. Time Precious Time 10. Love Runs Deeper ...Hm. Honestly, Underground, Treason, and TPT are all tied...and I love them all, so it's hard to rank them. It's just that my top 6, I am absolutely in mad passionate LOVE with, so they get bumped down, LOL. And really, my #'s 2 through 6 are almost tied too! The only one that for some strange bizarre reason, I *cannot* get into, is Love Runs Deeper. I do not like it, I'm kinda afraid to admit that, but I don't. ;) I can see why most of you adore it...I just...I don't even know what to say about it. It's slowly growing on me...and "Black angel can't be alone" is one of my favorite lyrics on the album. *shrug* It happens I guess! |

I can't really get into it myself don't feel bad. The one song that I love and am surprised that it is on the bottom of most lists is Bel Air Rain. |
1. Great Day
2. Gift of Screws 3. Bel Air Rain 4. Love Runs Deeper 5. Wait For You 6. Twist of The Right Place To Fade Fate 7. Underground 8. Did You Miss Me 9. Time Precious Time 10. Treason 1-6 are all SO close within millimeters of eachother. All of those first six have gotten played 15 times or so by me in th past 5 days. 7-10 are by no means anything to sneeze at, but there's a clear divide for me as I indicated visually by my space. |

This is harder then I thought!
This by no means is set in stone because it seems to be changing daily what I would consider tops! The only two I can really say that I rank low are #9 and #10. The top 8 I really love... and to rank them is hard, but this is what it looks like today. 1. Bel Air Rain 2. Love Runs Deeper 3. Wait For You 4. Gift of Screws 5. Great Day 6. Right Place To Fade 7. Underground 8. Did You Miss Me 9. Treason 10. Time Precious Time |
Gift Of Screws Top 10
1. Gift Of Screws
2. Underground 3. Bel Air Rain 4. Treason 5. Great Day 6. Wait For You 7. Time Precious Time 8. The Right Place To Fade 9. Love Runs Deeper 10. Did You Miss Me I tend to like the weirder stuff over the conventional sound. The last few songs on my list could have easily been on a Fleetwood Mac album. When it comes to solo stuff I would rather listen to songs that are "different." That's why I love Gift Of Screws and Bel Air Rain, those songs would never fit on a Mac album in their present form. That's why I LOVE the ALBUM and the man behind it LB!!!!! |
As of today (5 days after the CD was released), here is my order of most favorite to least favorite songs. This may change....
1. Wait For You 2. Right Place to Fade 3. Gift of Screws 4. Great Day 5. Love Runs Deeper 6. Bel Air Rain 7. Underground 8. Treason 9. Did You Miss Me 10. Time Precious Time |
1. Treason -- can't get the vocals out of my head.. especially the chorus
2. Underground--gorgeous, intimate short story of his career 3. Great Day --masterful studio work and song craft 4. Wait for You 5 Love runs Deeper 6. Bel Air Rain 7. Gift of Screws 8. Right place to Fade 9. Time precious Time 10. Did you miss Me 4-8 could be exchanged with each other, all are great Time precious Time is not bad at all...perhaps shortened up a bit and less vocal, maybe even instrumental... for me the only weak and least creative song is "did you miss me" and even that is decent |
1. The Right Place to Fade
2. Love Runs Deeper 3. Underground 4. Did You Miss Me 5. Gift of Screws 6. Wait For You 7. Bel Air Rain 8. Great Day 9. Treason 10. Time Precious Time |
1. wait for you
2. time precious time 3. love runs deeper 4. right place to fade 5. gift of screws 6. did you miss me 7. underground 8. great day 9. bel air rain 10. treason |

Holy crap. Thank you for putting this into words, 'cause I was really trying to find the right phrase, LOL. |
I love lists! I hate lists! Let's do this.
1. Love Runs Deeper - I love and adore this song so much. That solo kills me! I like that it's calm in the verses then bombastic in the chorus. 2. Treason - Fell in love with this one when I heard a 30 second snippet on Amazon. It hits me hard and I am still trying to figure out exactly why, but man...the tears flow when I listen to it, that's for sure. 3.The Right Place to Fade - Still say he's saying twist of fate. Blistering solo FTW! 4. Gift of Screws - The maniacal laughing KILLS. Such a fantastically wierd song and I love wierd. 5. Wait For You - "Tarantula passes by the window..." The only thing I don't like is the title change. Shuffle Riff is SO much cooler. Heh. 6. Did You Miss Me - Such an amazing pop song. Catchy as all get out. I am always humming this song to myself. 7. Bel Air Rain - "...still I caaaaaaaaan't complain..." is brilliant. Such a great flurry of guitar work. 8. Underground - One of the "breather" songs on this album. Hehe. It's so pretty and calm. 9. Great Day - What a terrific opener! Great guitar work!! 10. Time Precious Time - I love this song, but ranking this album is extremely difficult. Something had to be #10. I only put it here because sometimes, it's frustrating to listen to. LOL It's gorgeous and the guitar work is amazing, but it's very repetative. Regardless, it's soothing in a wierd way. There's not a song I don't like on this one. They are all amazing. |
1. Bel Air Rain
2. Time Precious Time 3. Great Day 4. Wait For You 5. Underground 6. Love Runs Deeper 7. Gift of Screws 8. Right Place to Fade 9. Did You Miss Me 10. Treason  I still don't get it why we rank this as ten loose things. It's an album for christs sake  |

1. Time Precious Time
2. Underground 2. Bel Air Rain 4. Wait for You 5. The Right Place to Fade 6. Love Runs Deeper 7. Great Day 8. Treason 9. Did You Miss Me 10. Gift of Screws Stellar album.. love it all.. |

I feel the same way. I wasn't crazy about the track "Gift of Screws" before it was officially released. On CD, however, it's one of my absolute favorites. I just love the energy of it, as well as the melodic *precision* of the yelps in the chorus. "Deep Dense" was far and away my favorite of the original GoS lineup. Sadly, I lost that song when I changed computers. I'd be eternally grateful to anyone who might help me get "Deep Dense" again -- not the more primitive version that's easy to find, but the more fully produced version I once had. Here's hoping Lindsey eventually releases this beautiful track. Ken [email protected] |
1. Right Place to Fade - always been one of my favs from Lindsey, let alone off the new album
2. Wait For You 3. Great Day - hated it the first listen, but then it grew immediately afterward 4. Gift of Screws - i loved it when i first heard it but...well, it's been years. 5. Love Runs Deeper 6. Underground 7. Treason 8. Did You Miss Me - it's just way too simple to me. ("Oh, this chord progression works, I'll just roll with that.") 9. Bel Air Rain 10. Time Precious Time - just can't get through it |

Below is my iTunes UK iMix for the Say You Will, Under The Skin and Gift Of Screws original tracks that may have appeared on the 2001 release:
The original Gift Of Screws album that has been made up of the final released version of the songs. This is potentially the track list that may have been released in 2001, had it not been plundered for the Say You Will (2003) album, Under The Skin (2006) and Gift Of Screws (2008) which was released with additional new material. |

I'll put my two cents in on my favs so far...
1. Great Day (WOW...what an opener!) 2. Right Place to Fade 3. Wait For You 4. Love Runs Deeper 5. Time Precious Time (this one is moving up the ranks for me, it was towards the bottom originally) 6. Bel Air Rain (Not sure why so many rank this low, I think it's wonderful) 7. Underground (this one & Treason will probably grow more on me) 8. Treason 9. Gift of Screws 10. Did You Miss Me (sorry to put this last, but it's a bit toooo perfect!) It's really hard to rank an album that I love all the way through like this one. I have to say though, that I rank the original 17-song bootleg of GOS above both the new GOS and UTS. I like it so much b/c it has songs from both solo works and SYW, and the tracks that went to SYW were not tainted (imo) by Stevie's warbling in the background. But LB's new tracks are wonderful as well, maybe I will burn myself a 'Mega-GOS' that includes all the original tracks AND the new ones. I can't WAIT to hear some of this LIVE!!!:blob2: |
