Abba Reunite!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...-premiere.html

Pop supergroup Abba have reunited for the first time in 22 years for the premiere of hit musical Mamma Mia!

The band, which had a string of hits in the 1970s and 80s, joined film stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan for the gala screening in Stockholm, Sweden.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad - known as Frida - and Agnetha Faltskog danced on the red carpet with Streep to the cheer of thousands of waiting fans.

Moments later, Benny Anderson, 61, and Bjorn Ulvaeus, 63, joined them on the cinema's balcony to wave to fans.

Streep and co-star Brosnan wanted the Abba musical, which premiered in London and Berlin this week, to have a special showing in the band's home country.

The full reunion was not certain until the last minute because of the reclusive lifestyle of 58-year-old Agnetha, the former blonde bombshell of the group which sold 370million records.

In 2004, the singer pulled out of a performance to mark the 30 years since the group won the 1974 Eurovision Song contest with the hit Waterloo.

The foursome split in 1982 and last performed together in public in 1986, although there were reports they sang together at a private birthday party for a friend in 1999.

They were once reported to have been offered $1billion to reunite for a concert tour.

At news conferences, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth enthused about Abba's music while discussing the challenges of singing and wearing figure-hugging Spandex costumes for their roles.

'Once I started singing, I kind of rather enjoyed it,' said Brosnan, better known for James Bond films than musicals.

'The Spandex was a bit of a challenge and the boots were. But I had the time of my life making this movie.'

Co-star Firth, star of two Bridget Jones's Diary films, said the most frightening aspects of the film were also the most motivating.

'There's an old Miles Davis quote which I've always cherished, which is "Don't play what you know, play what you don't know",' Firth said.

Ulvaeus had high praise for the actors' vocal abilities. 'Most of them don't think they can sing, but they can, I assure you.'

The Spandex outfits were a different matter.

'You're going to get bulges that you didn't want and not really developments you did want,' said Firth, who performed as Mr Darcy in the BBC mini-series of Pride And Prejudice.

Streep said she had been excited by the prospect of singing since she had performed in high school musicals such as Oklahoma!.

'That was my beginning so it was kind of like coming home to the thing that I loved very, very much,' she said.

The movie follows the success of the stage musical Mamma Mia! which features 22 Abba songs, including Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me and The Winner Takes It All.

Oscar winner Meryl Streep heads the cast playing single mother Donna Sheridan. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård play the three potential fathers of Donna’s daughter Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried.

Abba reunion: Don't hold your breath

Not even Meryl Streep's 'goddess'-like performance in Mamma Mia can tempt the Swedish pop legends out of retirement

No matter how many crowds cry "Mamma Mia!" at Meryl Streep's new Mamma Mia movie, ABBA will not be reuniting.
"Meryl Streep is a goddess," songwriter Bjorn Ulvaeus admitted this week. But the dazzle of her performance will not be enough to cajole the Swedish pop legends out of retirement. "We will never appear on stage again. There is simply no motivation to re-group. Money is not a factor and we would like people to remember us as we were - young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition," he told the Sunday Telegraph. :(

He has said this several times and starting from several years ago.
I agree with him 100%. ABBA broke up when they were still young.
Some things are better left alone and kept sacred.

I wish I has seen Abba live in concert. I've been a fan for as long as I remember and saw Abba the Movie when I was 7. My parents wouldn't take me to their concert as they said I was too young

Cool pictures. I love Benny and Bjorn. Two of my favourite songwriters.

Back in the autumn of 1979 they did their only and brief North American tour, less than 20 dates .I saw them at the San Diego sports arena.. a memory I'll always treasure.

Ahh come on now you don't think it would be a great idea to replace the reclusive yet inimatable and vocally gifted Agnetha with a backup singer to do her parts and hit the road for the dinero!

what a joke.. Agnetha is irreplaceable. Few singers are, as Freeddie Mercury, Mick Hucknall or Agnetha Faltskog.

But I don't think "Some things are better left alone and kept sacred" just because they broke up when they were still young.

Cause fortunately I could see in concert Fleetwood Mac, Donna Summer, Roger Waters in the present, when they are not young anymore, and believe me they did great shows, I was not dissapointed. I thank God they wanted to go on the road again, cause I couldn't see them in the 70s or 80s, when I was too young.

So I think ABBA could perform a GREAT SHOW.

If they think they feel old, they should ask Cher for the recipe.

kicthsy sartorial choices notwithstanding ,ABBA once they hit the big time were always very protective of their image so in that light I don't believe that it will ever happen .

You couldn't replace either Agnetha or Frida. They are the voices of Abba... very distinctive!

Along with that fact the way these two women blended their voices together was a sound distinctive to how either sounded alone and it was a thing to behold ..and I can attest that even live they did it flawlessly.

Stop rubbing it in that you've seen them live :p

Well, I just saw this movie today, and I have to say they did a GREAT job on it!! IMO.. It brought back SOOO many memories of the great Abba songs! Of course, when we got home, we went right to YouTube to see Agnatha and Frieda and the guys sing, and they were just incredible! I also wish they would re-kindle their band and go on tour, but from what I read I don't think that's in the cards. Their music is outstanding to say the least!

Someone has got to be kidding at the thought of replacing Agnetha. Cmon now. That's not ABBA. That's _BBA. Or ABB_. And blasphemous.

As much as I would love to see them.. they're damn right to do what they are doing. Some stuff is just too special to even think about lasting for forever.

ABBA > life

I was joking and making a reference to the preposterous and tacky notion posted on the Rumours forum regarding Fleetwood Mac's idea odf getting a 'back up singer" to do Christine's vocals and songs on the upcoming tour.
