1st LP you ever bought was....
Let's play a little game. If you can remember, what was the first LP (or Cassette or CD) you EVER bought? Name it and post a photo of it.
My first one was the Best of the Bee Gees 1970. I was a foreign exchange student in Germany. I bought it not knowing how much money it cost. When I got back to the USA, 1971? 1972?, I bought Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat. It was $3.33 and worth every penny. What was yours? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...els/1st-BG.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ls/1st-cat.jpg |

Kinda scary but I don't ever recall purchasing an actual LP. I know I had some when I was a kid...some Disney stuff...a few Christmas albums. The first CD I recall buying was the Batman soundtrack...so that would've been in 1989. |
INXS - Kick. Haha! I thought I was so cool. I bought it on cassette.
|
I bought two on the same day. I saved my money for so long...I was 9. It took a while.
Cloud 9 by the great, George Harrison http://www.reviewmirror.de/oktett/si...g/harrison.jpg The Red Album (compilation) by my boys, The Beatles http://www.davidjwilson.btinternet.c...s/redalbum.jpg Great thread topic by the way!!! :wavey: |

I'm too young to buy LPs while they were popular, but the first CD I can remember myself buying was....[oh god I don't even remember this...]...probably...a Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys Cd....wow...I also oddly remember myself buying Now 4 in 2000...
The first LPs i bought were used Christine McVie and LB Law and Order.... :) |
Here's mine. 1978, I was 8 years old and had some birthday money so my mother took me shopping to our local department store called 'TSS' (which stood for 'Times Square Stores'). Nestled in a corner of TSS, was a standalone semi-independent shop called 'Record World'. I had a $10 dollar bill, and this is what I bought:
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c.../GreaseOST.jpg Oh, and I'm pretty sure I got change back for my $10.00 bill. My sister Robin and I wore that record out, for sure. Everyday after school, we'd race home and play 'Grease' and pretend to be Sandy and Danny. |
My first was back in the late 70s and it was classic Boston!!! Still one of my fave albums of all time!

Bought my copy of this in 1974:thumbsup:
This album got me started being a metal head back in the dayhttp://www.infinitequest.net/yabbfil...s/headbang.gif http://www.kissonline.com/news/image...lbum_cover.jpg |
Ok...let me get this right.
In Chrislit18's past one would find: Hit me Baby, one more time? or was it the CD with Brit looking through the beads?? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x.../b-britney.jpg In Sara1998's past one would find: Need You Tonight ? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...-inxs-kick.jpg And for mylittledemon - Batman Soundtrack ? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/b-batman.jpg |
Jeez, I'll have to think about the LP part, but I can remember who the first 45s were that I got. It was David Cassidy's "I Think I Love You" & Sonny's & Cher's "I Got You Babe". I still have them, well , I have all my 45s that I accumulated. The funny thing is my grandmother, God rest her soul, got me really into music. I must have been about 11 or 12 maybe & she bought be those 45s because my parents got me a little record player, but didn't get me any records. I played them until I wore them out. I didn't even know who Sonny & Cher were at that time, but I did know who David Cassidy was.
Lee :) |
My mom bought me The Grease Soundtrack when I was seven years old.
The first album I bought with my own cash was Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain |

I am loving all the responses you guys are throwing out there.
The ANDY GIBB album with the *UGH* comment cracked me up. Thanks HeiraNYC The GEORGE HARRISON & BEATLES (#1 Liddybuck ) reminded me that I had not only the red album but the blue one as well, and my friends managed to scratch the p--- out of it. NEVER LOAN OUT AN ALBUM! Those were double albums, right and were expennnnnnsive! As for GREASE (petep9000) a generation later, my kids bought the VHS tape and managed to play it non-stop. And they pretended to be Danny and Sandy too! What a hoot! BOSTON (dnightshade) -- September 1976 - More than a Feeling....I can hear it now. Had it in my collection, until some 9th grader stole it...I taught high school and lost a lot of albums that way. As for KISS (BlueLamp64) I love your little headbanger or whatever that little animated dude is. My brother was big, big, big into KISS. He even tried to do the makeup. His favorite was the cat. You guys have brought up so many good memories for me today.... |

The funny thing is my grandmother, God rest her soul, got me really into music. I must have been about 11 or 12 maybe & she bought be those 45s because my parents got me a little record player, but didn't get me any records. Parents were like that. When he was 16, my husband got a car for his birthday from his folks .... but it didn't have an engine. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...-davidcass.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...-sonnycher.jpg Macmar71 -- I had Piano Man and Captain Jack (will get you high tonight) in my Billy Joel collection, but not the Nylon Curtain. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...-billyjoel.jpg |

The little animated dude is a smiley as a headbanging guy your right in the first place ;) Witch I use the image (Banging guy)from the BLESSED DEATH forum Im a Administrator on :) About a year latter (In 1975)after I got the KISS LP I receved a demo of WICKED LESTER(Pre KISS) from a brother I know back in the day on cassett I rarely play it any more because it's problity cost alot of cash now days..About five years ago I had the tape convert on a CD so I can play and headbang as many times I want without wearing out the old cassett tape:thumbsup: |
There can't really be an excuse for buying this but it was 1990 and I was 11 years old.
Vanilla Ice - To the Extreme http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Worse still I actually had my hair cut like him. What a treat I must have looked! |
Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues. It was the first album I bought on my own. We always had records when I was growing up. Both my parents were big music fans and I have all their LP's, 45's and 78's in my music room along with two jukeboxes - one that plays 45's and the other plays 78 rpm records.

This is the best Friday, I've had a long time!
Seeing so many records, reminds me of my long gone teaching days. I taught high school English, German and Spanish in various towns in Nebraska. I was the pep club sponsor (nobody today knows what one of those is) and had to ride the pep club bus to the games and sit with the pep club. Luckily, the school bus had a cassette tape player and the driver was kind enough to let the kids bring tapes. I heard a lot of John Cougar Mellencamp (a little ditty 'bout Jack and Diiiaaaane) REO Speedwagon (Heard it from a friend, who, heard it from a friend who,...) 38 Special (So Caught up in you, little girl...) Brady Bunch (Something about Sunshine Day...we had this nerdy little girl and she'd always bring it. I had to work hard at not letting the other girls kill her.) Alice Cooper (Schools Out and Generation Landslide - This girl was a Goth before they became mainstream..) Pink Floyd (All in all you're just a (pause) nother Brick in the Wall...) Van Halen (Jump -- the girls were hot for David Lee Roth, but I liked Eddie...) Bruce Springsteen - Born....in the U S A Exile - I want to Kiss you All Over... The Police - Every Breath You Take... U2 - And I still, haven't found, what I'm looking for... Garth Brooks, I spent last night in the arms of a girl from Louisiana.... Those were great road trips, if you ignored the bratty, self-centered cheerleaders...) Thanks for humoring an old broad this afternoon...:wavey: |

Donna Summer's "Macarthur Park" b/w "Once Upon a Time (Live)". Bought it at Korvettes in Times Square. Unfortunately it was in one of those generic paper 45 sleeves (I always hated that- such a cop out), but I do recall that it had the Casablanca Records graphics in which the image of a camel morphs into a movie camera. I would like to think that I still have it packed away somewhere along with all of my other vinyl. |
I think Grease was a gift from grandma, aunt or my parents. I'm not sure I bought it with my own money. What I have really a good memory is the moment I bought Donna Summer's LIVE AND MORE. I wasn't sure if buying this or BAD GIRLS (both were double albums). But at the end I chose L&M. I remember that day at the store, I was 12 I think.
I think my election was right. I enjoyed Live and More a lot!. and the "more" means side B of disc 2: the MACARTHUR PARK SUITE. MacArthur park is a great song but the experience of listening its long version is superb. I think and feel that was the moment I bought an LP for my very first time. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...eandmore-1.jpg |
Honorable Mentions:
Saturday Night Fever http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ls/snfever.jpg Did someone say Donna Summer? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...nnasummer2.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...onnasummer.jpg And Gerry Rafferty? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...fertycover.gif And Casablanca Records? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...s/cas45rpm.jpg And as for Beavis and Butthead.... http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x7/ewgubbels/B-B.jpg |
First LP I actually bought with allowance money was:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...mac_mirage.jpg MIRAGE!!!!!!!:] I think I got this one next: http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...04864mfkao.jpg |
^^^^ [sorry i forgot who posted it....] but whoever had the Vanilla Ice 'to the extreme'...I officlaly love you. seriously.
Ice Ice Baby is one of the few rap songs I can tolerate. Love that wanskta!! I cannot beleive I actually said that! Quote:
you know what, It was Oops I did it Again. I never got Baby One More Time!! [Thank god for those Now CDs!! That's the only song I liked on BOMT (the title track)...so I never bought it!] But on the note of this thread and everyone here but me buying cool first CDs [although I have recently found myself back in the Backstreet Boy phase I was in when I was 9 or 10...]...Its just one more reason I wish I was born in the 70s than 92. I really think that music as a whole thing has gone down since the 80s...with a few jems here and there now. Someday Ill have to ask my mom what her first LP was...who knows if she actually remembers, but she has a HUGE collection, with LedZep, the Doors, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, and a bunch of other Rock greats! [no FM though...but she does have an Eagles....go figure.] |
About 46 years ago, I bought the best sounding surf album of all-time! Surfbeat by the Challengers!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-Surfbeat.gif and at the same time The Little Old Lady From Pasadena by Jan & Dean: http://bp3.blogger.com/_Hbqf2LImoxc/...m+Pasadena.jpg "Put a Dodge in YOUR garage, honnnnnnnnnnNY!!" EDIT: I should also mention that I bought both of those albums NEW, on sale, for $1.49 each. (and a big sacrifice not spending my allowance on baseball cards!!!!) And, the first 45 I bought was "Ahab The Arab" by Ray Stevens (for a whopping 58 cents) "...rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and a bone in her nose, oh no!!..." |
This is for Chrislit18! http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...ey-oopsbig.jpg You have some cool choices! There's no need to apologise. As for the Vanilla Ice...I smiled when I saw that post. For years I argued with my Students that the guitar riff was from Queen's Under Pressure. Didn't the news say recently that Vanilla Ice was serving time in the big house??? |
This is for ChiliD --
I haven't thought of this in YEARS! That song had some of the coolest lyrics!! http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x...bbels/ahab.jpg |

The sheik of the burning sand He had emeralds and rubies just drippin' off 'a him And a ring on every finger of his hand He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head And a scimitar by his side And, every evenin', about midnight He'd jump on his camel named Clyde, and ride [Spoken] Silently through the night to the sultan's tent where he would secretly meet up with Fatima of the Seven Veils, swingingest grade "A" number one USDA choice dancer in the sultan's whole harem, 'cause, heh, him and her had a thing goin', you know, and they'd been carryin' on for some time now behind the sultan's back and you could hear him talk to his camel as he rode out across the dunes, his voice would cut through the still night desert air and he'd say (imitate Arabic speech and finish with "Sold! American) which is Arabic for, "Stop, Clyde!" and Clyde'd say, (imitate camel sound), which is camel for, "What the heck did he say anyway?" Well, he brought that camel to a screechin' halt (verbal screeching sound) In the rear of Fatima's tent Jumped off Clyde, snuck around the corner And into the tent he went. There he saw Fatima layin' on a zebra skin rug With [Spoken in falsetto and possibly with female backups] "Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and a bone in her nose, ho ho." [Spoken] There she was, friends, lyin' there in all her radiant beauty, eating on a raisin, grape, apricot, pomegranate, bowl of chittlin's, two bananas, three Hershey bars, sipping on a RC co-cola listenin' to her transistor, watchin' the Grand Ole Opry on the tube, readin' a Mad magazine while she sung, "Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor?" Yeah, Ahab walked up to her and he say, (imitate Arabic speech), which is Arabic for "Let's twist again like we did last summer, baby!" Ha, ha, ha!! You know what I mean! Whew! She looked up at him from off the rug, give him one of the sly looks, She said (suggestive giggles, then outright laughter) "Crazy, crazy, crazy baby!" ('round and around and around and around, and around and around and around) Yeah, and that's the story 'bout Ahab the Arab The sheik of the burnin' sand Ahab the Arab, the swingin' sheik of the burnin' sand |

I don't remember -- probably MARY POPPINS or something by Elton John, like CARIBOU or CAPTAIN FANTASTIC.

oh my....I can't even remember why I bought this, I think it was the fun of actually having the money to be able to by my very own LP! I do remember it being a good one though.
|
Ahab the Arab, can not be read. It must be listened to to fully appreciate the emphasize & parody of it's words.
My first purchased LP (kiddies...LP, not cassette or cd.....) was the Superman soundtrack. Was a big deal. I couldn't hum you one note of that album if I tried, but at the time, it was a major deal. 45...was I think either Ring My Bell by Anita Ward or We Are Family by Sister Sledge. Purchased at ye old Mart of K. lol. Remember they used to have a MUSIC section? Actually there is this K-Mart in the Santa Cruz area, and I swear to you everytime I have gone in there, you can still find imports things. Last time...atleast 2 years ago, they still had a Chain Sampler...from Australia. How random. Great other Ca/US record places...Gemco. Anyone else recall those? |
Matchbox:matchbox summer 1980
Matchbox:midnite dynamos christmas 1980 Matchbox:riders in the sky spring 1981 (actually traded it for the comic book) Matchbox:Flying colours spring 1981 Anybody wanna guess which was my favourite group at the time? Still have those records. FM connection here is, few years ago i bought Stevie Nicks' the Wild heart and it had the sticker on it showing it had been originally bought from the same shop i bought those records. After becoming a serious Kiss fan in 1984 i started buying records more frequently first one being Kiss:Rock and roll over by the end of the year i had bought a massive 5 records! well, just, last two i bought on new years eve. All Kiss records. I've no recollection which would've been my first 45,but it must've been either a Kiss,Iron maiden or Dio single. Few years ago i reached 1000 lp's with Emmylou Harris:Cimarron My latest lp is Mahogany rush:IV My first cd was Queen:A day at the races in 1989 And just recently i bought my cd #1000 with Suzanne Vega:99,9*f |
being that my mother is an avid antique collector (and seller), the majority of my childhood was spent in antique shops. the only way she could get me to stop asking if we could leave was to send me to booths with records and tell me to pick out what i wanted. i picked albums by their covers... albums with names or song titles that i recognized.. etc. so i don't really know what my first LP was... i've literally had tons of records my whole life.
i'm thinking the first LP i spent my OWN money on was k-tel presents "The Magic of ABBA" http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/357409.jpg i think the first CD i spent my own money on was Ace of Base - The Sign http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Albumcover.jpg ... apparently i have a thing for the blonde/brunette swedish 4-somes. nah.. it's probably just the infectious nature of dance music that i like so much. :) |

I missed the LP generation. And I can't remember the first CD I bought. But these are the first LPs I have ever bought from the Flea Market.
