Well, look what happened when she finally tried to be an "artist," i.e., her last critically panned flop album? Now I hear she's back to cranking out those manufactured pop ditties that made her famous.

I think it's a rarity to find a true artist on a TV talent competition, but I don't think it's impossible.

I just try to imagine musicians that I admire trying to compete on a show like American Idol, and I'm just at a loss. It's all so humiliating, especially the way they are forced into making those "videos," i.e., extended commercials. And the way they are allowed to be berated like that; anyone with integrity and true artistic grit would not tolerate that. Sure, it's good entertainment, but it's soul-robbing nonetheless.

the key is finding a singer who is already an artist and not try to make a singer into an artist. does that make sense?

Agreed, but there really is no art about this. You will never see a Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, etc. "discovered" on a show like this. Their objective is to find a "star," not someone who has any personality or a point of view.

one thing that bugs me about LL is that every clip I see of her singing Bleeding Love, she does the exact same movements and sings the song the exact same way over and over and over. if you've seen her sing it live once, you've seen them all. maybe she'll grow with that in time.

Actually that kinda reminds me of this singer whose name rhymes with Sticky Wicks... Hmmm... :p
