OK Rep.Sally Kern "the gay agenda is a bigger threat than terrorism"

OSBI Opens Investigation Into Death Threats Against Lawmaker

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into death threats against a state lawmaker who told a political group that the gay agenda poses a bigger threat to the U.S. than terrorism and "is just destroying this nation," an OSBI spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Gov. Brad Henry said he was disappointed in Republican Rep. Sally Kern's comments, which were recorded and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube.com on Friday by the Washington, D.C.-based Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. Henry said he believes public officials should "cool the rhetoric."

"I don't think it represents Oklahoma," Henry said. He said his religious beliefs teach him to be tolerant of diverse lifestyles and viewpoints.

"Think before you speak," the governor said. "Oklahomans have love and tolerance for all people."

OSBI agents met with Kern, of Oklahoma City, at the state Capitol Monday afternoon after she received thousands of e-mails and telephone calls from people reacting to her comments to a group of Republicans about gays and their lifestyle.

"I'm not gay-bashing. But according to God's word that is not the right kind of lifestyle," Kern said in the recorded comments.

"Studies show no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades," she said. "It is not a lifestyle that is good for this nation."

Kern said a few of the e-mails she received supported her comments but that most condemned them and some contained death threats and obscenities.

"I hear what you said and you should be killed...," said one e-mail.

"You honestly think that homosexuality is a greater threat than terrorism?" said another. "How someone as petulant and vile as yourself got elected to office, I will never understand."

A spokeswoman for OSBI, Jessica Brown, said three agents are investigating the threatening e-mails to determine their source and determine whether the threat is genuine.

"We're pouring over thousands of e-mails," Brown said. "You have to pick out the ones that are threatening and the ones that are harassing."

"We have to work through them and then track them down through various investigative means and try to determine their intent and then take it to the district attorney," she said.

When asked Tuesday whether she was concerned about her safety, Kern said: "You need to talk to the OSBI."

Kern has said her recorded comments were taken out of context and were directed at wealthy, politically active gays who support gay and lesbian candidates for public office in Oklahoma and other states.

"I was talking about an agenda. I was not talking about individuals," said Kern, the wife of a Baptist minister. "They have the right to choose that lifestyle. They do not have the right to force it down our throat."

"I have never said hate speech against anybody. I would never do that," she said.

Kern's comments were condemned by various groups including the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. The Victory Fund said Kern's comments had received more than 530,000 hits on YouTube.

Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund, said the group does not condone threats that have been directed at Kern.

"We're not standing by anybody who is making any kinds of threats against her," Wolfe said.

But he said Kern needs to understand that her words have outraged thousands of people.

"We can have a political dialogue without that kind of speech," he said. "There's no way you can get away from those kinds of comments."

In a letter to Kern, Wolfe said her words could have real-life consequences.

"What you said is not OK, but that's not because most sensible people disagree with it," Wolfe said. "It's because your words give aid and comfort to those who would hurt, maim and even kill people who are different from you.

"The point of the Victory Fund's releasing your speech was to draw attention to the fact that even elected leaders like you are saying some nasty and potentially dangerous things about your fellow citizens," he said. "Our mission is to elect people to counter your hate and bigotry with honesty and courage."

For the record this 'person' does not speak for me and my views...So please dont judge all of us Oklahomans as being 'relig-a-tarded' or as 'Bible-humpers', k?

strandinthewind 03-12-2008 08:08 AM

I sent her an email saying that you do not have to live a Christian life to be a good American and the First Amendment prohibits requiring someone to live as a Christian. I then told her that according to The Bible and Jesus, only God can judge and I hope He judged her less harshly for assuming His roll than she judges her fellow man. Finally, I congratulated her on using this wedge issue to sell tickets to her freak show.

The sentence "Oklahomans have love and tolerance for all people." really made me laugh. Like.. Oklahoma is fricking Utopia or some ****. Detached from reality much, Gov?

DavidMn 03-12-2008 01:31 PM

You know, I think alot of people think the deep south, I.E Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, are the main places of intolerance of all kinds, but that pocket of Oklahoma and Kansas is underrated really. I mean you have Sam Brownback, the Senator from Kansas, one of the most socially conservative people in either the house or senate, and Fred Phelps, and now this Character in Oklahoma.

I though about it for a minute and I wanted to add this because I didnt want to have anyone interpet what I said as a blanket statement against everyone from those areas or that intolerance doesnt go on in other places.

yeah, really. i think the thing a lot of people who aren't from the south don't realize is that people in those (these) places have bigger stuff to worry about than not liking gay people. that's not to say there isn't intolerance down here, or that poverty doesn't exist elsewhere, but there is a lot of poverty and crime down here. it's kind of like worrying about yourself more than what other people are into. just a thought.

i do think you're right about hate in the midwest. seems like there's a lot of white bread out there with not much else to do than meddle and stir the pot.

I was born and raised in small town Oklahoma and I can tell you first hand that she does not speak for me or anyone that I know....PERIOD!!!!!!!!! She is an embarrassment to our great state. How the vile women can stand up and say she represents our state is pathetic and she should be removed from office. I have a much bigger problem with her then I do with the governor of NY.

Well, there's a longstanding sense among the virulently Right that the two coasts are bastions of reprobate, free-for-all love & disdain for All Things Godly. So the thinking is probably, "Let's move to the Midwest in order to be as far away as possible from the Sodoms & Gomorrahs of the East & West Coasts."

This Congresswoman is worried about the threats made to her in e-mail. But she calls millions of Americans more dangerous than terrorists. What does America do with terrorists? Hunt down & kill or imprison. Is the Congresswoman implying that similar measures should be taken against millions of gay Americans? That right there is a whopper of a threat.

. . . Unless she denies making any such actual implication, in which case, what does that say about her -- she's willing to allow millions of people she considers more dangerous than terrorists to move freely about?

She puts herself in a logical bind & doesn't even know it. She's a shining example of what the power of language & reason can prevent from happening to us.

For those of you ledgies still in school, I implore you to keep studying & learning the mechanics of language & logic by putting this negative example in front of you.

One thing about hate here in the midwest that is worse than in the south is that I think those that practice hate up here in the midwest are much more 2 faced about it. A black friend of mine told me awhile back that he'd much rather be back in South Carolina where hes from. When I asked him why, he said at least you know who hates you down there. I thought that comment was very interesting.

The truth always comes out!!!!

As it should happen to be…

The homophobic Republican hatemonger from Oklahoma has a gay son!!!!

That's right, Sally Kern's son Jesse is a big ol' homo, PerezHilton.com has learned.

We're sure he's REAL PROUD of mommy!

And, it has also been revealed that Good Ol' Sally has lied about receiving death threats.

God is ashamed of Sally Kern. We know. She told us!

Uh-oh! Could foul-mouthed Sally Kern’s secret be out of the bag?

The Oklahoma lawmaker’s homophobic remarks have been the talk of the town recently, especially her assertion that gay folk are infiltrating schools to indoctrinate children. And, sensing a critical national spotlight, Kern made a very suspicious change to her official government homepage.

If you compare a March 4th cache and today’s version, you’ll notice that Kern and/or her staff deleted a biographical sentence mentioning her two adult sons, Jesse and Nathan. Obviously our warning bells went off, so we did a little digging and found something quite queer.

Consider comment seventeen on this Tulsa World article: “How come no-one asks this “supposed” christian woman..about her own GAY son? The one she basically has dis-owned…ahh so christian.”

What?! Kern and her Baptist preacher hubbie had a homo? And they disowned him? That’s some Alan Keyes XXX…

A little more digital detective work dug up numerous postings naming Jesse as the outcast offspring. One even recalls Jesse’s time at Oklahoma Baptist University, where he was apparently “the biggest queen on campus”:

I find it hilarious that Salacious Sally is such a bigot. Her son Jesse was the biggest queen on the campus of OBU in the mid-90’s. Twice he almost was expelled for making inappropriate advances in the library toilets. When he wasn’t cruising the toilets he was in the glee club and a piano major…there’s your sign.

Another comment, punches holes through Kern’s religious extremism and suggests Jesse’s homosexuality pushed Sally Kern over the edge:

Jesse Kern, Sally’s son, was raised in a strict Baptist environment. If your claims are true then you must blame her and her husband for his turning out that way. Most gays aren’t out there breaking the law and engaging in public sex acts and solicitation. Jesse chose criminal behavior to act out on his desires.
…

I see in this foolish woman much anger and resentment. Her beliefs are challenged within herself, because if she stands by them then she must accept her part in her son being a homosexual. She isn’t strong enough to do that. Instead, she has created a paranoid delusion that there is some vast conspiracy of gays infiltrating schools and governments to turn others gay and force their lifestyles on everyone. Her subconscious has created this great gay evil so she doesn’t have to blame herself and she says her son as a victim.

Had the gays infiltrated Jesse’s school and indoctrinated him then? Funny, how he attended Baptist schools. His attendence [sic] at Oklahoma Baptist University was marred by his repeated censure for cruising the school’s toilets. Had he been able to live his life openly he would not have had to engage in such actions.

Woof. Those are some allegations! And potentially disastrous for “family friendly” Kern. It also makes you wonder how Kern and her ilk sleep at night - and whether they understand the concept of “hell”.

George Clooney was called "gay gay gay" by a Website recently. When asked to respond he said, “No, I’m gay, gay. The third gay – that was pushing it.”

DavidMn 03-13-2008 01:45 PM

You know, I'm acutely aware of the whole family disowning a gay child thing. My good friend Craig, whos parents are Jehovah's Witnesses have basically had nothing to do with him since he came out of the closet 25 years ago. He's pretty much given up on trying to have anything to do with them anymore. It took him a long time and a lot of therapy, but he's in a much better place now. He's been such a good friend to me. I guess I dont know how lucky I am to have such an accepting family. I remember when I told my mother I was 24 and I cried for 30 minutes before I got it out., SHe looked at me and was like "sweetheart, I knew since you were about 14." that broke the ice and we laughed like crazy. Now my dad was another story. He's a retired cop, so I was very nervous. His response when I told him was even funnier. He was like "well, since I deal with DWI's and drug dealers all the time, and you dont do any of that stuff, I guess youre all right. Hey, I cant say my parents dont have a sense of humor eh?

Well...

she was on the local news this afternoon trying to play 'spin' and I just had to take a listen so I can 100.00% give the seal of approval that she is full of ****.

Oh, by the way, this article is funny:

Ellen Show Jabs Back At Okla. Lawmaker

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern's recent anti-gay remarks are spurring a national controversy, leading one talk-show host to jab right back.

On Wednesday's airing of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which can be seen on KOCO-5 at 9 a.m. each weekday, DeGeneres tried to call Kern's office.

After several rings, there was no answer.

"She's busy. It seems that she's getting some voice mails," DeGeneres said. "I'll leave a message right here in case she's watching. 'Um, Hi. It's Ellen DeGeneres ... the gay one.'"

Wednesday's episode was taped on Tuesday, show representatives told KOCO.

Kern's statements bashing homosexuals were posted on YouTube earlier this week. They were recorded during a public meeting and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube.com on Friday by the Washington, D.C.-based Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry said he was disappointed in Kern's comments, noting that he believes public officials should "cool the rhetoric."

"Think before you speak," the governor said. "Oklahomans have love and tolerance for all people."

Kern told a political group that the gay agenda poses a bigger threat to the U.S. than terrorism and "is just destroying this nation," an OSBI spokeswoman said Tuesday.

However, the Republican's comments have netted possible death threats, which are being investigated by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
