Great show!

I have to admit I was looking all around the stage for Stevie to make her cameo during American Girl.

jannieC 02-03-2008 08:34 PM

They were excellent and I think Tom looks great. He's aging nicely. :)

I love that the crowd of youngsters were singing along to the songs.

Probably models hired by Fox!

shebop 02-03-2008 08:38 PM

I noticed the singing along too! Usually they use seatfillers for those performances so it was nice to see that they knew the words!

Yeah, I kept scanning the stage looking for the "dressed up" mike stand.
Oh well...

It was always my thought that IF Stevie were to appear, they would have promoted the hell outa that.

Regardless, it was a great - if short - set.

I'm so old school; I don't even think of stuff like that. Well, at least they knew the words. :)

nailatixela 02-03-2008 09:27 PM

Well I saw the words were being shot up on the huge screen behind tom and the band... I think the younger folks get younger air time, even if there were lots more older fans.

But it was a good show, glad to see them! :)

Standback383 02-04-2008 12:13 AM

Crap, crap, crap!! I took my niece out to dinner when TOm performed...does anyone know where I can find the video?? I tried YOutube and that didn't work out.....

Those yougsters were recruited bt the producers. They were not game ticket holders that rushed the field. Notice they all had matching flashlights. They probably rehearsed with the band.

Subdued halftime show

This was the most subdued and quiet half time show in recent years. I guess since Janet Jackson, the networks are getting very conservative.

I really dug the intro/stage set up. Whats really a bummer is that although you'd need a literal football field to store them in, is that they make these kick ass things for artists and their performances, then scrape em' after the show. I mean c'mon...that stage & set up was just too frappin cool! OK, MAYBE he'll take that on tour with him...if he's playing all large venues this summer, but I predicted it'd be smaller places.

I thought he was really good, but I would have much preferred he do a set that did not have 3 out of the 4 songs from the Full Moon Fever album. (And we complain about Stevie/Mac fixating on Rumours!) A fine (and popular, and critically acclaimed) album, but he has others.
IMO "I Won't Back Down" (idiotic lyrics, weak melody) does not measure up to a lot of his other songs like "Refugee", "Learning to Fly", etc. - and "Breakdown" is always great with a big audience.

Agreed. But I think the common denominator for this set selection was truly what the biggest selling hits were. I would have LOVED to have seen "Breakdown" -- which was my first TP song I ever heard back in the 70s.

Still -- it was a great set. And that stage was awesome!
Im gonna see Tom in August and I cant wait....

I was a little disappointed with his song choice too. And seriously, I had NO idea that all the people dancing and rushing the stage were hired. I am SO old school!

Hey! Don't disrespect "I Won't Back Down," that "weak, idiotic" song hooked me on Petty back when I was only 8 years old.

I do agree, though, that I would have liked to have seen a more varied setlist. But we have to keep in mind that he was playing for a group of football fans, not Petty-heads, so he needed to pick songs that the average person is going to know.

Well, "I Won't Back Down" and "Runnin' Down A Dream" were pretty appropriate tunes for the evening...I loved it! Thought he looked and sounded GREAT!!

Exactly. I would have loved something from Highway Companion (Saving Grace rocks) but realistically, it wasn't gonna fly. Good choices for a generic footbal crowd, most of whom were probably only vaguely familiar with Petty's work.

Yeah, my friends were making fun of me big time before he came on and then they were all like "Oh I love this song" (Free Fallin - which actually now makes me want to projectile vomit). It was funny. It looked to me like he gained a little weight and looked a lot older. Still, a great performance.
