The Best Live Rhiannon

Hello Iam ne here i thought we could look at our fav performaces live of Rhiannon

Here Mine: From Live in Los Angeles, CA 8-29-77 http://www.mediafire.com/?01s1chfng4o

Melack 01-17-2008 12:36 PM

Hi, everyone! I'm new here at the ledge, so this is my first post. I'm a little newbie when it comes to Fleetwood Mac, I discovered them for about 6 months ago and I haven't got all the records yet.

Anyway the best version of Rhiannon that I've heard so far is from the Midnight Special.

wildheart048 01-17-2008 04:47 PM

Yup, Midnight Special would get my vote, as well...

bucklind17 01-17-2008 07:38 PM

The Rosebud Documentary one is pretty kickass. That was the best era to hear "Rhiannon" live, methinks.

Here's another really good one: (video quality sucks)

michelle2677 01-17-2008 08:26 PM

nope. still rosebud for me

Sanne2 01-18-2008 08:25 AM

Rosebud.
Midnight Special Rhiannon is too "clean" for me.

Sarah 01-18-2008 12:09 PM

Rosebud for me also.

Oh how I wish they would speed it up again... just once for old times' sake, even. The slow Rhiannons make me sad. :distress:

Phoenix 01-18-2008 12:21 PM

WELCOME! To those who are new!:wavey: Im always up for the topic of Rhiannon. i think it could be separated into the coolest or best rhiannon of the 70s, 80s the 90's and the nows. I love the song in anny incarnation.
but definatly:
rosebud,
Japan77,
mirrage video,
and if i could mash up the begining of the dance slow piano intro with the version on crystal visions.
Cant wait for the Soundstage Rhiannon. Black wings and top hat. ahhhh:thumbsup:

When is somebody going to circulate a clean copy of that show? We need that video & the Landover video from the following year in immaculate copies (like the 2nd US Festival & Landover 1983)

vivfox 01-18-2008 08:08 PM

I have 3 top favorite Live Rhiannon's. I love them equally and they are May 14, 1980 Chicago, Illionis, June 13, 1980 in Rotterdam, Holland and June 22, 1980 in London, England! I've yet to hear another live one better than these three. Just my opinion.

I have three favourite Rhiannon performance. I like that from MIrage video and The Dance video. But I really love the BTM version too, when she sings "all the saaaame all the saaaame..." Good quality is for example from Manchaster (Stop Main Road).

HBO Special

I have to say my favorite Rhiannon was the HBO special way back when. It was just Stevie and Roy (at the piano) to begin with. It was the first time I saw her start out slow and I couldn't believe it! Then she did a kick butt version ~ truly "Stevie" style!

gldstwmn 01-20-2008 08:31 PM

I have a lot of favorites but here's a particularly good one:

I've never seen this-wow. I didn't start seeing Stevie live until Rock a Little, and didn't see FM live until SYW. I can't even imagine what it was like to see FM performances like that.

LiamMcConville 01-20-2008 11:11 PM

This RAL performance gets my vote, incredible vocals and wails, twirling, cape, the works:

(Closer towards the end, watch how the security guards runs behind the stage to keep up with Stevie.)

DavidMn 01-21-2008 03:53 AM

I've always been partial to the Mobile Alabama version from 8-11-80. I know it may not have the all out kick ass vocals, but there's something about that version that has always sent chills up my spine.

Watching that reminds me of how obsessed with her I was at that time. I was 17-18 and totally enthralled. Sadly, I have been comparing her live performances ever since. I know that many believe her RAL performances were awful, but the ones I saw were totally inspired and full of what made me love Stevie to begin with.

Musically, the only problem with the tour was the drummer, Marotta, who struck me (pardon the pun) as snare-heavy. (Mick Fleetwood did every show with Stevie out here, & I kept hoping he'd kick Marotta off & slip behind the kit). Otherwise, everything clicked beautifully -- even the backup vox team, who looked like very expensive escorts. It was all very L.A., as they say nowadays.

My favorite Rhiannon is still the one on the white album. Apart from its other beauties of sound & style, I hear no specific musical antecedents; it seems to have sprung fully formed from the band's collective subconscious knowledge of the cosmos.

gretchen 01-21-2008 01:30 PM

I just love The Dance version. It has this pull that is so magical to me.

petep9000 01-21-2008 05:39 PM

What I love about the whole tour, and you can even hear it on this clip, are the vocal spasms that she'd bleat out. Yes, technically it's not good singing (tearing out from her throat instead of pushing up from her diaphragm) but it was heavily resonant. It was very heavy, and she just doesn't put it out there anymore.

Listen at points 04:18, 04:25, 06:34 and 06:51 for the husky, shuddery, vocal freak-outs that she'd pepper the verses with. I don't know, I just felt it more. Felt like she was actually trying to bring us into her little mental world at the time. The new Vegas-type Stevie performances are fine for some, I guess. What the audiences today hear is Rhiannon. There's no suprise, and no one walks away from the show saying "gee, ya know she missed part of the verse" or "gee, she added a lot of 'wells' that I don't remember hearing on the CD". I just wonder if anyone is ever again going to feel Rhiannon.

P.S check out Eleschia Wright. What a hoot! Now THERE was a little soul injection into Stevie's band. Even icy Sharon was trying to keep up.

I 100% agree with everything you've posted here. I've always said that while I'm happy Stevie was able to free herself from drugs, she sacrificed a lot of her dramatic flair and intensity for her sobriety. Back then, it seemed as though she was so INTO everything. The last few shows I've been to (well, since TISL, if I'm being truthful), she seems NOT to be very emotionally present. I think she sounds great, there's just almost no spontaneity anymore. I'm sure that people will want to give examples of recent Stevie fabulousness, and I agree that there have been some performances where the old Stevie pops out, but for the most part, it's a different show now. I hope I don't sound ungrateful- I love Stevie now just as much as I ever have. It's just a new, calmer sound/show.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but this is sort of related. I apologize in advance if we've had multiple threads discussing this: has anyone ever positively ID'd the performance of 'Rhiannon' from the 'Tusk' tour where instead of instead of singing "Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind..." Stevie chanted "Is this what you want from me...?" before ripping into a mind-searing vocal freakout?

I dunno. I mean, Mick says it happened in his first book, anyway. I'd be curious to know if this was true, and if there are any recordings out there in the ether that someone might want to share with us.

Oh yes, it's true. Now I have to remember which boot that is from.

It's a little ad lib that you can hear on a lot of Rhiannons around that time. Listen to the tape of the 1st night of the Hollywood Bowl two-nighter -- it's there, too.

Just like nowadays she does that stupid "And you still cry out for her/Don't leave me, don't leave me/Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwww" drawing it out as if each syllable were portentous.

I don't see anywhere to click to download the song on that "megaupload" site.

Rosebud is my favorite, but she looks amazing in the Midnight Special. I also like the "Live" album one. I hate "The Dance" version - it drags, IMO.

Great Rhiannon! But how do you know it was Aug. 29? ChiliD & his friend taped that, & he can't remember which night of a multinight stand at the Forum it was.

Put in the 3 letters it asks for at the top... Scroll down and let it count down the 40 seconds or so. and then click on the "free download" button when that's done - and the download should initiate.

Villavic 01-24-2008 05:55 PM

I do like the Dance version. It's sober, elegant, I like the arrangemens.
Of cour the 70s or 80s perormances are far more intense, energic. I like the Mirager the LIVE versions.. they sound cool and Stevie gives everyting toer public.

Bumperke 01-25-2008 04:59 AM

To be honest, i don't like Rhainnon at all.
The song sucks.
Stevie wrote a bunch of good (and even brilliant) songs, but this is not one of them.
Sorry,....:sorry::sorry:

Yes, in some ways it doesn't hold up to 'Affairs of The Heart'.

Michelle I think that was feedback from the amps. That happened a lot in the 70's. Nowadays with our high effing tech we don't have to hear that anymore.

I have to say that I completely agree with that, David. I don't like that "still cry out/don't leave me" thing she does these days, but some people like it....just a different personal tastes. I really miss Rhiannon the way she performed it back in the day. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels that way. I personally never cared for the style she performed it in for her solo performances either. The FM performances are the only ones for me. I also like the Rhiannon in the Mirage video, but that is an acquired taste that most people would not share with me. I hated it at first, but it has grown on me. She looks really rough, and her voice is shot, but after she twirls back onto the stage, she comes to life with some really dramatic stuff, like "Baby, you don't change, and I don't change, and you don't change....Rhiannon". Riveting! And just Lindsey's guitar work alone in that one makes it worth loving.

I also like the Midnight Special, Mobile AL, the 78' video posted in this thread, and the version that trotter posted is superb. But one of my all time favorites is from early in the While Album era...a true moment in history. It's almost identical to the audio version that Michelle posted. They were new and slightly unpolished...not visually perfected yet, and there was bad mic feedback. But the difference in this one and all other versions I have ever heard is Lindsey's undulating guitar work that starts at about 4:37 minutes. I've never heard him do it quite that way in any other version. I wish he had kept it going longer and continued to build on it...simply mesmerizing. She totally expends herself toward the end. What a gift she had. Here it is:
