New to The Ledge; Stevie Nicks Remix Project
Hi everyone,
Cliffs Notes Version: I was 13 year-old dedicated Pat Benatar fan when I bought the single for Stop Draggin' My Heart Around at Sears after seeing the Stevie's video on Solid Gold. Two years later, I was forced to tell Pat the bad news - I was leaving her for Stevie and I hoped she wouldn't take it too hard. Anyway, the Ledge is a wonderful resource and radiates a great sense of community. I work with a growing armada of DJs, nightclubs and event producers, etc., so now that I'm suitably entrenched in the industry, I will be actively advocating and campaigning for more remixes until you, I and Stevie can't spin no more. Below are the first of 20 direct download links. I will posting all of my Stevie/FM dance remixes. I have included some background on a few (which follows the links.) I'm sure most of you of excavated many of these, but I hope there's one or two that is new. I spoke with Tracy Young yesterday, and basically...any day now. More info below... Stevie Nicks - Dreams (Dub Mix & Club Mix set rip) The "Dub Mix & Club Mix set rip" was actually ripped from one of Deep Dish's live sets where Sharam mixed in and out of the their Club & Dub mixes. 2) Fleetwood Mac - Dreams (White Label 2004 Remix) DJ Susan Morabito - who broke the glass ceiling for women circuit DJs - has played this track during Morning Parties on Fire Island. Last year, she included in a special promo set. 3) Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen (White Label 2002 Remix) My friend DJ Richie LaDue surprised me with this one Saturday night in Provincetown. He played it and then handed me the vinyl. He knew his life depended on it. 4) Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (Terranova & Austin Leeds Remix) Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (Starkillers Vegas Strip Unreleased Mix) Nick Terranova also records, remixes and DJs under the name Starkillers. This mix was favored by more adventurous electro house DJs. 5) Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (Disconet Mix) Disconet was the first DJ remix service widely accepted by dance clubs throughout the U.S. and elsewhere. Released in 1986, a few years after Stand Back's original release, this 7 minute edit by Art Maharg contains samples from Rhiannon and Edge of Seventeen. It's really dated, with faux synth wallops that sound very Fisher Price My First Keyboard. 6) Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way (The Dave Aude Ultrasound Long Remix) Most have heard Dave's great remix, but usually only the radio edit. The Ultrasound Long Remix is even better. 7) Stevie Nicks - Planets Of The Universe (Illicit Vocal Dub Mix) I uploaded the illicit Vocal Dub Mix of Planets, because it was this track - with a new keyboard line and a carthartic re-editing of Stevie's throwaway line "You Won't Forget!" that DJs were playing at peak hours or mashing with Madonna's Music. Some of the most influential DJs still throw it down now and then. While Tracy's mix was gorgeous and maintained the integrity of the song, it was far too down-tempo for prime-time or after-hours sets. However, it was Tracy's version (and that fact that she used the vocals & lyrics cut from the album edit) that sold CDs. If you have remix by Victor Calderone, it's mislabeled. Victor did not remix Planets. 8) Stevie Nicks - Mistress of My Fate [The Dealer] (acapella) 9) Fleetwood Mac - Landslide (Guitar Twang D.I.Y. acapella) These two acapellas have been floating around a number of remixers looking for new tools to create tracks with. Paul Van Dyk has toyed with The Dealer. I don't know who extracted the Landslide D.I.Y. acapella, but it's not a sanctioned acapella. Many young remixers get their start crafting white label or bootleg mixes by extracting their own acapella tracks. Typically, they sound somewhat filtered, etc. D.I.Y. stands for Do It Yourself. There are several ways to extract the vocal from a track, but the best way is THE PHASE CANCELLATION METHOD. It will not be a 100% perfect acapella in comparison to a sanctioned acapella, but if done properly the extracted acapella will be good enough for a remix project. PCM: Get an instrumental of a song, invert the phase (sometimes called flipping), and mix it with the original.. If done right everything besides the vocal is canceled out. You can do this in any sequencer like cubase or acid.. The instrumental must be exactly the same time/pitch however. and mp3s might not work if they are badly encoded. Zoom right in to see the 2 waveforms next to each other (look for kick drum hits) and line them up. (I cut & pasted the last paragraph. I've seen this done a million times, but don't ask me to do it. I got a headache just reading about it. I am always pushing the few Stevie acapella tracks I have (Blue Denim, Ghosts) on every remixer I know, if only to point out Stevie's untapped goldmine of passionate, ready for the club vocals. Some have bitten. But I really need more acapellas. They don't have to be complete songs. I have many fragments from Master Reels, etc. I'd really love to hear what all of you think. What songs would you like to hear remixed? I'm also thinking outside the box. Throwing a galloping backbeat behind If Anyone Falls or Talk to Me is too predictable and unnecessary. I can tell you that rising star DJ Ranny, who has several Billboard charting remixes, has been working on a non-commissioned Stevie remix. It's nowhere near finished, but it's a peak hour tribal track. Expect Tracy to leak Edge of Seventeen any day. I've been harassing her with comedic bits on her myspace page. She's holding off because Edge may get a physical CD release. It hasn't been decided yet. If you're in LA next Sunday, she'll be playing it at Scandal. A few more: Edge of Seventeen (Thunderous Olympian's Acid Rave-Up) (Absolutely horrible, but it was popular in Scandanavian clubs.) Fleetwood Mac - Tell Me Lies (AXC Remix) Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies (Mario Ochoa vs. DJ Fist Remix) Harry Peet vs. Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies (Original Mix) Thanks so much -Rick |
Wow!!
Impressive set of music here. I have a lot of these but a lot I dont. Thank you so much. And Congrats on your good taste in switching over to Stevie. I CANNOT wait to hear the Edge remixes from Tracy Young. Have you heard them yet? Any reviews? Thanks again!!
John |
I heard it via cellphone will Tracy was playing it, but I could distinquish it from all the ambient noise and screaming. Tracy had Giangi Cappis handle the engineering and mastering, so it's going to sound really good. A bunch of other guys are remixing it. So they'll be dragging their feet, like Warner always does, to release mixes and the less commerical remixes will get refused and then leaked by the remixers.

Another batch of treadmill-ready remixes; 28 tracks added this morning
Stevie no longer relevant? The most heralded and influential DJs/producers/remixers in various dance genres (house, drum & base, electro clash, etc.) keep looking to her - and Fleetwood Mac - for inspiration and ideas. In Europe's underground scene her vernacular might be lost in the translation, but her sensibility is understood and emulated. Even in NY's drag scene, the queens don't approach Stevie as camp, but with tribute by singing live and dismissing lipsynch. If she's not relevant, who is? Okay, preaching to the converted. My first letter-to-the-editor defending Stevie was in 1986 when a Boston Globe music critic fertilized his concert review with fat jokes. Twenty-two years later and I still haven't moved on.
Yesterday I posted 20 remixed tracks. This morning I added another 28. I folded yesterday's links into the new batch. New links have an *. For some variety, I included a dance cover of Rooms on Fire by Europa XL w/Natalie James. Remix by Almighty. Also of interest is High Contrast's drum & bass track, Days Go By, which was a huge hit in that genre (mostly overseas). It features a very healthy sample from Edge of Seventeen, including Stevie's voice. The title is ripped from the lyrics. It was a commercially-released single, but Stevie is not credited. There is also a music video on youtube.com. Look for Deep Dish's great remix of Go Your Own Way. There is also a dull white label vinyl remix of Sara. File name: Deep Dish ft. Stevie Nicks - Dreams (Axwell Remix).mp3 Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?1qbtzw0yd92 File name: Deep Dish ft. Even though I haven't acted in years, I'm part of a theater company called The Gold Dust Orphans. One of my best friends, Ryan Landry, is the company's founder and driving creative force. Ryan and the Orphans have received national acclaim & awards for a very distinctive brand of comedy performed in Boston and Provincetown. Ryan's plays have been produced in LA, Seattle, Miami & New Orleans. Stevie happens to be our favorite and Ryan writes one Stevie mention (or obvious visual moment) into each show and only her music can be played while the audience is being seated. It's more subtle than it sounds. We became the Gold Dust Orphans when our first theater space was shut down by the Fire Dept, leaving us without a theater. Ryan has performed at Night of 1,000 Stevies. His friend founded the event.

I heard Tracy's set at a club in Atlanta. She played her new remix of Edge as the last song of the evening, by that time the pitch was so fast you couldn't even recognize it as being Stevie singing. I guess we'll have to wait to single comes out to really tell.
Thanks for these remixes! |
If she was confined to a 4-hour set, I'm sure she had the pitch cranked up by six percent in the final hour, which will cause the distortion you experienced. Vocals always suffer in the final hour of a party.

Thanks again, GDO, for all these great remixes! I saw Pamela Stanley last summer in Rehoboth Beach and talked to her during her break, and Stevie's name came up (at it always seems to do! : ) anyway, when she came back from her break, she opened with Rhiannon and dedicated it to me...It was my 'landslide' moment...hee hee hee!!!

So far, these are most downloaded mixes. I'm surprised that Deep Dish's remix of Big Love has only been downloaded 11 times. It's one of the best remixes here.

thanks for posting these i can't believe you have so much stuff.

I'm glad I can contribute to this site. I have downloaded some great tracks, especially from VivFox and Jazmen Flowers. During the mid-80s I bought those awful Uncirculated Rumors bootleg albums that had great tracks, but the quality was so bad the tracks were barely audible. To find high quality versions of Forrest of the Black Roses is like finally getting the pony I was promised at 13 years-old.
I am looking for feedback, positive and negative as well as requests. If a dance track is out there, I can find it. Thank you so much. -Rick (Later today I'm going to scan and post my photos of FM from the Halloween night concert ('87) at the Boston Garden. My first time in the front row, but I could only sneak a few shots. These boards are making me very nostalgic.) |

Thanks so much for posting these!! Hearing so many of these for the first time is a real treat! As for requests, I'd love to hear remixes for Fleetwood Mac's Peackeeper. Also, is there any indication there will be any more mixes on the way after Edge of Seventeen? Thanks again!

Still don't know why Modern issued a 12 inch. |

I hear ya about the 12" singles. Those Brits can be kinda retarded when it comes to these maxi-singles. I remember, many years ago, picking up the maxi-single for Queen's song "Innuendo," because it was titled "Innuendo- Explosive Version." I thought, ooh, I wonder what this would be like. So I get it home, and it is identical to the album version... except they tack on a 20-second explosion sound at the end! Is it any wonder that music fans are so anti-record label? |
Thanks! There are some cool re-mixes here. I have a few not listed and I will try and post later, although they may have been posted here on The Ledge before, as this board is always in constant cycles of threads. I also just got a USB Turntable so I want to rip mp3's of the full vinyl TITN collection of Big Love, Little Lies, Seven Wonders and Family Man (circa 1987). With the latter having quite a few bonus beats and crazed mixes.
I do want to comment on Planets Of The Universe (Illicit Vocal Mix) which I find inferior to Tracy's version. Illicit (I have heard them remix other songs) tends to make remixes very gay, something you would hear at a white party. Not my cup of tea as I find it too "anthem." |
Family Man remixes
I agree that Illicit's Vocal Club Remix is uninspired and frilly, but their Dub Mix is radically different. It's the mix DJs were actually playing. There's also white label pressing of "Music of the Universe," which merges Madonna's Music and Illicit's Vocal Dub of Planets. It doesn't utilize any of Stevie's vocals, but uses the keyboards.
I haven't posted any remixes in a while, so here is "Family Man." I gave this one a separate post, but I wanted to also include it here for one-stop shopping.
So far, I've posted 76 Stevie Nicks/FM remixes in the "Steve Nicks Remix Project" thread and all the previous links are still good - via Mediafire. Here are four unexpected remixes which maintain the integrity of the original compositions. GDW is particularly interesting because the remixer, Chicago's DJ Tim A, used a vocal from a live performance. The other remixes are: Rooms on Fire, Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind and Seven Wonders. All are 320 Kbps. Here are three Landslide remixes. Two are commercially-released from 1997; Barkan & Ottaviano's remix is white label.

I already have that single from 1997 when "Lanslide" was remixed 3 different ways and the live version was featured on it. I liked the remixes they did on that song. They sounded nice and smooth.
