How goes the diet?

You guys doing OK, with the holidays & everything? It hasn't been difficult for me, actually. I don't deny myself anything, I just watch my portions - treat myself to 2 or 3 cookies a day & try to keep up with the exercise (although I've been busy, so I'm down to 3 or 4 times a week instead of 6.) Oh well, any activity is better than nothing. And I'm still at my goal weight 6 months later, so I must be doing something right. :D

strandinthewind 12-19-2007 04:22 PM

I am as fat as a tick on pig

Seriously, I got back on the exercise horse this week and am getting back on the diet train next week. Can you say "And Leon's getting LLLAAAARRRRGERRRRR"

Jesus, me too. I don't even know why I opened this thread other than with the hope that there would be someone else like me here. :o

skcin 12-19-2007 04:28 PM

I'm sure you guys aren't alone. I'm hoping this thread livens things up a bit around here - one thing most people never tired of yakking about was being fat, eating food, drinking, etc. :D

I went up a pants size since like July. Oh Well - January is it for me!

I found a picture of myself from the day I found out I was pregnant with Sara. It made me sick. I realized how much weight I've put on in the past 10 years. I'm ready for a real diet that I'm actually going to stick to. That picture traumatized me.

David 12-19-2007 05:55 PM

I've put on 5 pounds in the last few months, but it's solid muscle. I'm back to enjoying a childhood favorite: smoked oysters. I eat about 150 smoked oysters a week. Great omega-3 source.

I'm very happy I don't have a sweet tooth. I do, however, have a 'salt' tooth. Chex Mix it is!

I don't have a sweet tooth either, thank GOD. I am more of a mashed potato type girl.

kathy1 12-19-2007 08:53 PM

good luck with the diet.

AliceLover 12-19-2007 08:57 PM

Since I left for College I have lost five pounds. I think it has to do with the ability to be able to eat last and the fact that I am walking EVERYWHERE. My college campus is huge and there is a ton of walking involved for me. So im quite content with myself.

Gypsy-Rhiannon 12-20-2007 08:59 AM

My diet has been ****e over the last few months... I'm either really good or really bad so my weight has been up, down and up again. Christmas is always hard for me with so many goodies around so I plan to really tackle it after the holiday

lol... I look nothing like my driving license and passport picture. I was pretty huge when they were done and my hair was really short.

Wow, it takes courage to finally admit that you have gone up a size! I know that during my one and only excursion into "heaviness" - about 20 pounds above my fighting weight, I continued to shoehorn myself into my size 30 pants. I had the whole muffin-top thing going on, ripped seams, popped buttons, you name it. And the impression of my belt buckle on my belly fat too! But I never, ever went up a pants size. In hindsight, I suspect that, in reality, I was easily two sizes (or more) above my usual.

Well, I was down to a 32, which at 6'4" is pretty thin. I am getting the 34 Calvin jeans closed and he is not known from being generous with his cuts

But, hope springs eternal and I am off to the gym later!

Oh, you are a big gal, aren't you! :p Yes, 32 is a wee bit gaunt. I would imagine that 34 is probably much more appropriate for you than 32. And don't mess around with that bitch CK. That stuff shrinks so badly... and heaven forbid you should have any semblance of an a$$ or thighs...

I have a friend who's constantly lamenting about how she wishes she were the size she was when she was 20. I personally don't think anyone should look back & want to be just like they were in the past. Life's a journey & things change - it's not natural to go in reverse. From the pics you've shown here, you've lost weight over the past several months & I think you look great. If you want to lose more, go for it - try for a better/healthier future you. But I wish you wouldn't compare former you to current you - you're not being fair to yourself & it will only make you feel down.

Amen, seriously. Awesome post and advice. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look good as we get older, but no matter what *I* do, I will never be the hot little 20-something I once was *sigh*.

I don't know... I mean, I agree with you about life being a forward-looking journey, etc., but at the same time I think it's a bit defeatist to just sigh and resign yourself to being in a situation that you're not 100% okay with. I would like to think that we should always do whatever it takes to make sure that we are getting better and better in every way- healthier, prettier, smarter, kinder, stronger, and if weight is an issue, leaner too. Why do we have to associate aging with decline? I think that if, for whatever reason, you consider 20 to be your pinnacle physically, there is nothing wrong with striving to get back there. You were there once, so you sure as heck can get up back there again- and perhaps even surpass it.

I've been very lucky all my life to be able to eat anything I want and not gain a pound. Of course, want I want is not sweets, donuts, and other fattening foods...just never liked it much. Six day a week, two-hour work outs sure help.

I know - that was a trip - I did 45 min. on the stairmaster, 30 in the bike, and then lifted. Then 30 minutes later I preceeded to have like 12 vodka's --- so healthy - can you say popsicle toes

I know. My fav. jeans ever are Gap. GThey used to last for years and cost $20. Now, they are three times that and do not last as long. Oh Well.

Last night I went to a Holiday Party in a green Burberry sweater with an argyle print on the chest to difuse the protuberant abdominal region  Did I mention I wore a shocking Christmas red turtle neck underneath it - not to mention black horse bit loafers  Your West Village eyes likely would have been horrified :wavey:

Word. You can use those old photos for motivation but not to beat yourself up.

There's a lot more jiggle in my wiggle right now although I'm not up a size or heavier. I just haven't been to the gym for a couple few weeks. I got sick and then there's all this Christmas ****e to do. But I'm going to the gym today or at least doing yoga here at home. It is really hard this time of yr so I try to go easy on myself.

I stopped buying Gap jeans when they started making them really thin. If I want cheap jeans I'll buy cheap jeans. I'm not paying $50 for flimsy. Banana's pants/jeans fit me best right now and are better quality.

You can get a great pair of Dickie's over at Sears.

My uncle was on the cover of the Dickie's magazine

I like them, but there is no Sears anywhere near me.

I usually wait until next month when everything is on sale and then hit Gap and Marshall's. I got some great shirts for $5 a shirt at Gap last ear and some pants for like $15 each at Marshall's.

I still haven't heard the real song.

And you'll recall that I worked out before the drive to Dallas & skipped the booze while there, so I felt justified to be a poolside lazyass. (Especially after you showed up looking like you were ready to pass out!)

Some exercise pros think that strength training & cardio shouldn't be done during the same workout. They say it can reduce the effectiveness of both workout types, & perhaps even result in a catabolic effect.

Something to think about:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...20/ai_n6160508
http://www.ivillage.co.uk/dietandfit...172610,00.html
http://www.naturalstrength.com/tips/...?ArticleID=833
http://www.thedietchannel.com/Balanc...ith-Cardio.htm

Since I get negative gains from doing strength training more than twice a week, I devote the other five days to cardio -- but not a constant high rate of cardio. I like to do my most intense cardio on the day before strength training (in my situation, Sundays & Thursdays), & then keep cardio to a medium level on the other three days. Each strength training day (Mondays & Fridays) is always a two-hour "to-failure" workout.

strandinthewind 12-23-2007 10:06 PM

^^^

I know - I try not to over do it. I do think, though, that my body type and the fact that if I SMELL fried chicken, I gain ten pounds

Seriously, I just like going cardio. I have an Ipod with everything from Ozzy O. to LVB and I just escape into the music for an hour or so.

JWS 12-24-2007 02:04 AM

I had a big steak tonight at a holiday party :distress: I hope I don't gain a pound. I'm going to work out three hours tomorrow to make it up..at least one hour on stairmaster.

Oh no, I don't mean say "well, f*ck it, I'll never look like that again, so why bother?" I just mean that it's not realistic for most people, esp. women & esp. if they've had any kids, to expect to be the same size they were when they were 20. I think setting attainable goals is much better, and once you attain 1 goal, you usually want to set another. Like, if someone want to lose 50 pounds, it's a hell of a lot easier to say "OK, I'm going to start working out more & eating better & lose 10 pounds" and go from there. After the first 10, you say "Wow, I lost 10 pounds! Maybe if I do just a little bit more, like work out 10 more minutes per day, I'll lose 10 more!" 50 pounds seems insurmountable at first, but little by little, it will come off.

Personally, I am now the size I was when I graduated high school for the first time since then - but when I changed my eating habits & starting working out last year, that was NOT my goal - my goal was to lose 10 or 12 pounds, get leaner & more toned, and more physically fit. I ended up losing 20 & realized, "holy ****, this is the smallest I've been in 15 years!" I am more fit than I've ever been. So yes, you're right on that, it is possible. But I never aimed to look like I did then - I would have to tease my hair & put blue eye shadow on again for that. :D I honestly think if I had told myself "You'd better lose 20 pounds & fit into your high school jeans again" I would have gotten frustrated really easily & could very well have given up.

I bought my fave pair of jeans of all time in 2000 at Banana Republic for $9.99. Still wear them several times a week!
