Report: Britney Spears' 16-year-old sister pregnant

http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/1....ap/index.html

NEW YORK (AP) -- Another Spears baby is reportedly on the way -- and it's not Britney's.

Jamie Lynn Spears, shown in September, stars in the popular Nickelodeon series "Zoey 101."

Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old "Zoey 101" star and sister of Britney, told OK! magazine that she's pregnant and that the father is her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge.

"It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected," she said. "I was in complete and total shock and so was he."

Spears is 12 weeks along and initially kept the news to herself when she learned of the pregnancy from an at-home test and subsequent doctor visit, she told the celebrity magazine, which hits stands in New York on Wednesday and the rest of the country by Friday.

What message does she want to send to other teens about premarital sex? "I definitely don't think it's something you should do; it's better to wait," she told the magazine. "But I can't be judgmental because it's a position I put myself in."

After she found out from a doctor that she was pregnant, she said, "I took two weeks to myself where I didn't tell anybody." Watch how pregnancy could impact Spears' career »

"Only one of my friends knew because I needed to work out what I would do for myself before I let anyone's opinion affect my decision. Then I told my parents and my friends. I was scared, but I had to do what was right for me," she said.

Spears broke the news to her mother, Lynne, just before Thanksgiving, the magazine reported.

"She was very upset because it wasn't what she expected at all," Spears said. "A week after, she had time to cope with it and became very supportive."

Lynne Spears, already grandmother to Britney's young sons, told the magazine: "I didn't believe it because Jamie Lynn's always been so conscientious. She's never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby."

She said her actress daughter, the telegenic heroine of her popular Nickelodeon series, has known Aldridge for years and began dating him in high school.

But in a recent interview with The Associated Press, Spears said she had no steady boyfriend. "I kind of just keep my options open," she said. "I have a bunch of friends that I always hang out with, a bunch of guy friends." She declined to talk about her older sister.

Spears spoke to the AP shortly before Thanksgiving, the day she told OK! she informed her mother about the pregnancy.

Jamie Lynn plans to raise the baby in her home state of Louisiana -- "so it can have a normal family life."

Nickelodeon released a statement: "We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being."

A publicist for the network did not immediately respond to phone and e-mail requests for additional comment.

"Zoey 101" is scheduled to conclude its third season January 4 with a cliffhanger episode in which Spears' character must decide whether to leave her fictional Pacific Coast Academy boarding school in California to join her parents in London.

The show is scheduled to resume in February, and its producer, Dan Schneider, has said filming on the fourth season has already been completed.

Mama Lynne did a superb job, n'est-ce pas?

When someone argues with me that collectivism in practice & a strong propensity for government handouts are essential because the market, if left to its own devices, would create widespread poverty & injustice, I just reply: "If the Spears family can become multimillionaires thanks to the market, anybody can."

strandinthewind 12-19-2007 01:16 PM

It was stupid of her, if this is not what she wanted. But, I cannot fault her for doing what I did at around that age. Who here could not have had an accident (condom breaking, etc. ) at that age

I do find it interesting that she whored this out for what I assume is six plus figures and then essentially says she needs her privacy

She'll make more than one million off of this publicity alone.

they are reporting that the mom, is it lynne?, was about to release a book on parenting, it's now apparently shelved:thumbsup:~

Isn't 16 a bit young to be living with her boyfriend?

I've never had it happen. And what, she couldn't afford birth control pills? Depo? Nuvaring? She's in shock that having sex caused her to get knocked up? No method's 100%, dumbass. You're taking a chance every time you have sex.

Whatever, why do I care. Hope she actually makes an effort to raise her kid unlike her dumb trash-ass pig sister.

I am just saying that despite best efforts, condoms break, the pill is a dud, they got loaded one night and he came too fast - blah blah blah. I certainly have seen that happen. In the end, I am just saying I do not fault her for accidently getting pregnant, if that is what happened. To these eyes, it could happen to likely 99.9% of all 16 year olds these days.

I make no comment on her ability to parent or her sister or her mother for that matter, except to say that I have known kids from the best and seemingly most caring and well centered families (which she apparently is not from) to get knocked up

I don't know, this whole thing reminds me of the girls I went to high school with sho were quick to call some girl a slut because she got pregnant when the other girls were screwing their brains out as well. I guess getting caught is the name getter  Sounds like BS to me though.

skcin 12-19-2007 04:27 PM

^ Oh, yeah, I don't think she's any different than most other 16 year olds. I'm just saying you make your bed, you'd better be ready to lie in it. Don't act like "Oh my God, how is this possible?" Um. We all know how it's possible. If you're truly not ready, don't take the chance.

Of course, many young people have decided to go with anal or oral sex instead to avoid pregnancy. :( They don't realize they're still at risk for STI's. Gonorrhea in your throat sound good to anybody? Barf.

I am sure that there will be lots of jokes, (which will make me laugh).

Both Spears girls have the money (if need be) to be single parents.

Not many 16-23 year olds do.....

(How old is Britney?)

Bad move to shelve it on the part of the publisher. It probably would have been one of the classic howlers of all time.

I agree 100%. And I did have it happen at around that age. Scary stuff. Was I ready to be a parent? Hell no. Did that stop me from having sex? Hell no. It's just part of being a teenager.

The apparent fact that the majority of teens act like idiots doesn't make what they virtually all do less stupid. The same can be said of all of us, of course. The stupidity of drinking & driving doesn't decrease in inverse proportion to the number of people who drink & drive.

Stupid deeds are stupid deeds, regardless of whether 1 in 6 billion commits them or whether all 6 billion do so.

I just do not think having sex at 16 with someone you love makes you a slut  To me a slut is someone who screws the high school football team after a game  and, not that wasn't me :wavey:

I may not like this chick for other reasons, but this ain't one of em

we had a 10 minute discussion on this in AP history yesterday.
apparently the kids my age care more about this than the manga carta being sold.
[that was the subject, but then some girl randomly shouted "OMG DID YOU KNOW THAT JAMIE SPEARS IS PREGNEANT"]

I was making fun of her the whole day.
seirously.
Shes too young to be having the baby [if youre against abortion read as: keeping the baby]. I know if I got pregneant [well, I wouldn't cause I wouldnt have sex  ] at 16 I wouldnt keep the baby. I mean, its not like she needs to go to college, but it kindof ruins your life...don't you think?

I personally think she idolizes her sister too much. And her mother isnt in her life enough apparently to talk about sex with her. [its a nightly conversation in my household. ] But the thing is, i always thought she was such a nice sweet girl who cared about her life.
that was short lived i guess :(

Well, I see what you're saying, but... you can have sex and still care about your life. Girls just need to stop being timid about it... just go get the protection you choose and keep it with you. Of course, I'm not saying YOU, Chris, I just mean.. on the whole.

Abstinence-only attitudes and sex ed programs are making this problem worse. It attaches unnecessary stigma to people for making a personal choice. For weaker personalities, I would venture a guess that it could definitely prevent a teen new to sex from going to talk to a doctor or mentor about sex issues because they're too "embarrassed" or feeling like they've done something "bad". It creates more problems than it solves really. No reason to weave morality into it; sex ed/life skills/whatever the hell the class is called needs to just teach kids about covering their asses before it gets handed to them.

We just finished this unit in our health class. I agree with you though about the birth control. besdies condoms, it is always good to have a backup method that the girls should use. [Here where I live, Birth Control pills are apparently free. the state pays for them which is actually a really good idea!]

While I personally am not having sex at this time, I don't think that abstinence until marriage is a good choice. You make good points about the whole thing, and its not like sex is wrong. it is a part of life that most everybody deals with, and while waiting until marriage may seem like a good idea, it is not for everybody to wait, and i think it is better to have experiences than to be clueless. [for lack of better termenology.]

I dont know, I just really think that Jamie Lynn is making a mistake. I always thought of her to be such a good girl, and maybe even a role model to young girls.

I am unsure is she is making a mistake. The child will want for nothing. I mean the vast majority of abortions are done for financial reasons. I get that money is not everything, but she is not her sister, who seemingly is a bad parent - at least according to the media. To my knowledge, Jamie Lynn has not displayed that kind of whacked out drug induced bahavior. For all we know, she could be a good parent, though her mother apparently is problematic. Many a 16 year old turn out to be good parents

In the end, it is her choice to keep it and only time will tell. From what she says, which I do not really beleive, she says she wants the kid to grow up in Louisiana and have a normal existence. Hopefully, she'll do that and we will never hear from her again

On edit - I do not think much is known about JLS, other than her sister is a train wreck and her mother is a poor parent, though she wrote a book on the topic.

I can see everyone's point here, I really can. She's a kid who had an "oops." Unfortunately, it's a pretty huge "oops" and she happens to be famous, so everything's out there for the whole world to see. Whether she likes it or not, she's a role model, so she's going to be held to a higher standard & judged more harshly by the public. Really, in the end, why should we care? Big deal, good luck, now go away & raise your kid right.

It's an assumption I'm going to have to stand by, strand. It's safe to say there's but a microscopic amount of parenting wisdom in the majority of 16-year-olds in our culture (where 16 is still not adulthood). She could be a good parent, sure. She could be an astrophysicist about to crack the mysteries of dark matter, too. Life requires assumptions, strand. Wouldn't you agree? All we can do is hope that our assumptions are reasonable.

I don't know any of these people. All I know is that this 16-year-old has some sort of TV show. Anything else worth knowing?

Good music, but I thought the movie was bizarre ... in a bad way. I have some thoughts on the Eroica I'd like to share with you & the forum, but I haven't put them into words yet. I know what I want to say, but I have to try to say it simply & directly. I'm all about simple & direct, strand. In fact, I often read from my copy of Jacques Barzun's "Simple & Direct: A Rhetoric for Writers." If it were logistically possible, I'd share copies of this book with everyone here on the Ledge, & I'd ask for feedback. I'll try to put my thoughts into words on the Eroica in the next few days & share them with you. I know this symphony very well (in fact, it's even on my license plate), but it was only in listening to it once again the other day, watching a Kent Nagano performance on DVD & reading the piano reduction score in Schirmer's that these strange but fascinating thoughts occurred to me, after all these years.

Merry Christmas, strand!

strandinthewind 12-24-2007 06:18 PM

I generally love The Third, especially the daring length, when compared to Hayden or WAM.

As for Immortal Beloved - I found the strange thing about that movie was the liberties it took. But and in general, I liked it, esp. the scene where he is a young child having escaped the abusive father and lying in a pond that is reflecting the stars, all set to the choral finale, which is widely considered to be as a symphony within a symphony. Swoon Indeed!

And - Merry Christmas to you as well!
