I like homemade soups and chili. I also make a lot of spaghetti sauce. I used to *love* my husband's fried chicken, rice and gravy, but we don't eat meat anymore.

With whipped cream? My father-in-law's mother makes pumpkin pie every year for Thanksgiving and I ALWAYS eat it until I feel nauseous- it's *that* good.

cinnamon melt from mcdonalds

Beachwood Mac 11-04-2007 06:40 PM

You don't really eat it, but when it gets cold in San Diego (below 60 degrees ) my favorite is Coffee and Baileys.

Mac & Cheese is a big comfort food.
So are pork chops that are slowly simmered in cream of onion soup.
And speaking of soups, I make tortilla soup at least once a week during the winter. My best friend Patrick will specifically ask me to make it.

I have not had any of my comfort foods, though, as it is still 83 degrees here in south Texas. :wavey:

sasja 11-04-2007 08:07 PM

Tea.
Galons and gallons of it. Tea in my cup all day long basically.
Assam, Darjeeling, English Royal, Traditional, Lung Ching, White Dragon, anything... oh the goood Russian brands with their rosepetals and marigolds mixed in....

Just NO Earl Grey, Lemon, Mint or Orange spice. Whatever posessed people to ruin perfectly good black teas like that, FOR SHAME!!!

And around evening time, only sometimes of course ..... Some Southern Comfort neat :D

omg, how could I forget about mac & cheese?

additionally, i don't really consider "comfort foods" to be foods eaten when it's cold. even though I know that's what the thread is about, I consider comfort foods to be eaten

a. when you're PMSing
b. to prevent yourself from killing someone else
c. to prevent yourself from killing yourself
d. when you're really sad
e. when you've fallen off your diet
f. when you've been away for a long time and go "home" and get to eat
mom's cooking
and so on.

btw. i read this and found it from wiki. it's how we get addicted to carbs

Dangit - that was gonna be my reply. I'll just add that the green slop looks like chewed cow cud after the second regurgitation.

kathy1 11-05-2007 09:24 AM

i had chili last night for dinner and chicken and dumplings the night before that. so we will have leftovers for a couple of days atleast.

sara1998 11-05-2007 10:39 AM

Chicken and dumplin's... mmm mmm good.
I fixed ham and beans, fried 'taters, and cornbread last night. Amazing.
I like chili, but only so much of it.
I need to fix a roast soon. What pisses me off is I thawed out roast meat a week ago, then I figured out I didn't have any potatos, and my carrots went bad. Now, I have 'taters, still no carrots, and my roast is bad. Dammit.

JazmenFlowers 11-05-2007 10:52 AM

^^^
I make awesome chicken and dumplings. I also love broccoli and cheese soup in a bread bowl during the winter.

This reminds me that my Mom makes a mean beef stew, a great comfort food. I also love turkey dinner with all the fixin's, especially the stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce.

Sarah 11-05-2007 11:09 AM

zomg chicken & dumplins. it's so weird that this is a topic today.

i haven't had chicken & dumplins in years, and yesterday i got this craving. my mom is going to make me some this week. wooooot.

incidentally, in my world chicken & dumplins are called "chumper dumpers". i screwed up lots of words when i was little. -_-

other comfort food... mashed potatoes. always mashed potatoes. mom's potato soup (best in the world), mom's chicken casserole (omggg i haven't had that in years, i need it now too), grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, stuffing (nomnomnom). green beans (and not the kind that have a lump of pork in them, gag).. glazed carrots. cornbread.. biscuits. toast..

i'm totally starving now. i wish today was thanksgiving. :distress:

What? It's just mashed potatoes with vegetables. We're kinda big on that here, all kinds of vegetables really. And it's considered winter food.

I have to agree with Sherri Ann Cabot that SOUP is the best of all comfort foods.

You can eat a triple Whopper? Holy crap!

sara1998 11-06-2007 11:11 AM

Tonight I think it's gonna be smoked sausage, green beans, and boiled potatos... you know, all in the same pot, slopped into a bowl, and accompanied with butter bread.... lots of butter bread.
