For Halloween: Favorite Moments from Scary Movies
Here's one of my favorite moments. Last scene in Carrie.
Spoiler, obviously. What are some of yours? - Jake |
From the Changeling. Has anyone else seen this movie? It's saw it back in the 80's and it scared the life out of me! Don't know if it would now

Halloween
Halloween has always been my favorite scary movie. This scene still makes my heart race. I recently saw the Rob Zombie remake and IMO it can't hold a candle to the original.

scares the $h*t outta me...
The beginning of the recent remake of Dawn of the Dead. Where the couple wakes up in bed and little girl attacks the husband. *shudder*

When they flash to the little girls in The Shining.

It always makes me jump even to this day. I think the original Omen is one that really grabbed me as a kid. More suspense than horror but that chanting music and that creepy little boy really freaked me out when I was 8. |

In the early '70s, BBC adapted Dickens's "The Signal Man." It stars Denholm Elliott. I also think the Hoichi the Earless segment of Kobayashi's Kwaidan is freaky & chilling, as is the scene in The Innocents when Deborah Kerr sees the spectre Quint at the window. And don't forget (or have you forgotten already?) the burial scenes in Dreyer's Vampyr. I love scary movies that capture some of what Freud discussed in his essay on the uncanny -- images & sounds that seem to stir early memories & disrupt deep-seated psychological fissures. Some of the scariest scenes in films are those that make us think "I used to have that same nightmare as a child!" |

Great Thread!
How's about these? The Haunting (b/w version with Julie Harris, Clair Bloom) The Other (Uta Hagen 70's - evil twin stuff) The Changling (as has been mentioned...good psychological movie) and the grand prize winner: HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE with Bette Davis (OK, so maybe it ain't all THAT scary, but it's a good film...with some comical moments.) |

I may have been remiss in posting that those girls are the scary twins from The Shining. I think that they are musicians that reminded someone ELSE of the scary twins. I was at work when I posted the original post and didn't have time to do my research. Bad Jannie.
Here they are. (They became academics!) |

Speaking of deep-seated psychological fissures, a couple of the movies that scared the crap out of me as a kid ironically involved monsters who had no remorse about using people's trust and killing them: the daughter with the shovel in Night of the Living Dead and the aliens with the ray guns in Mars Attacks!. Then there was an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? on SNICK about Nosferatu haunting a theatre. |
The Ring. The friggin Ring scares the bejezus outta me. I am SO DOWN for horror movies. Not gore fests, but horror movies, but that one doesn a # on me just thinking about it. That bitch comes out of the TV and I am outta here! lol
Someone to mention the Changeling. WOW! Fellow kewl folk here. I LOVE that movie. Ghost Story is good too for a good classic (albeit sad) story. Don't Look Now is uniquely disturbing (under the surface like) Event Horizon (I think many of us have mentioned this as a top creepy film. though it's gory compared to the aforementioned, it's still one trippy, creepy ass flick!) I am a Zombie movie fanatic. All time best scene, though maybe not the scariest, but sorta the scariest. The end of the remake of Night of the Living Dead, where all are coming together, and it's a hunt down for Zombies. It's not that they are just doing what they have to do, it's a "fun, sport" type of activity for us. A real stark look @ how humanity would dehumanize a dead person for sport...much like we do daily...ok, that all sounds like talk in a circle. Anyone feelin' what I am trying to convey? haha |
I'm one of the few who didn't find "The Shining" at all scary (Shelley Duvall annoyed the crap out of me so I rooted for the axeman), & "The Ring" & "Ghost Story bored me to tears. I mean no disrespect, I know I'm in the minority with these opinions.
Here's another one that I laughed at from start to finish: Wish I'd found the "Hot!...Hot!...Hot..." scene clip. - Jake |

Linda Blair's voice in that one can still make me shudder. BTW, I'm working on a paper on Ruth Gordon, so I know I'll have to sit through that disgusting "Rosemary's Baby" rape scene again soon. - Jake |

The book The Exorcist scared the **** out of me moreso than the movie. The part when Regan walks crablike in a backbend down the stairs gave me the shivers and I don't remember seeing that part in the movie? Another scary scene for me was in the first Nightmare on Elm Street when thegirl sees her friend in the boday bag at school. God, that tortured me. Silly movie, but the concept was creepy- don't go to sleep! What can I say, I was 16 when that film came out. For me, the scariest scenes are the creepy ones. A horror movie I LOVED was Stir of Echoes. Very little gore, but lots of creepiness. |

The first time I ever babysat I was 15 & the two kids were upstairs asleep. I choose THIS moment to watch WASC on cable (Can you say BAD IDEA?). Twenty minutes into the movie, right as the cops tell Carol Kane to get out, she runs to unlatch the door, the shadow moves towards her, she opens the door, & there's a HUGE guy standing there...And suddenly, where I am, the power goes out in the whole neighborhood. I sat next to the TV in pitch-black, afraid to move for 30 minutes. Then suddenly the power comes back on in a burst of sound and light, & I'm face-to-face with Colleen Dewhurst's skullface & booming voice (Talk about somebody who made Stevie sound like a soprano by comparison). I just about needed a change of underwear. - Jake |

I love Colleen Dewhurst, but you is SO rite. :D |
