Julia Roberts honoured by Hollywood

I don't care what anyone thinks.. I love Julia Roberts. She starred in some of my all time favourite flims (Steel Magnolias, Pretty Woman, Notting Hill).

"At least twice a week, people come up to me and say something about Pretty Woman," Julia Roberts said on stage Friday at the Beverly Hilton, where she was honored by American Cinematheque. "They cling to that, and that suits me fine." With twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, almost 3, and Henry, 4 months, dominating her days, she said, she wants to be a mom "who'll work from time to time." Many of the actress's most famous fans helped salute her, and they shared their favorite Roberts moments:

Tom Hanks (stars with Roberts in Charlie Wilson's War, due Dec. 25): "Her laughing in the bathtub and slinking down in the tub in Pretty Woman. She's got a nice set of 88's — a wonderful big mouth that's loaded with the most beautiful teeth you've ever seen."

Bruce Willis (2004's Ocean's Twelve, 1992's The Player): "That scream she shrieked in Ocean's Twelve. They set it up so it would be a surprise when she saw me, so it was a real shriek."

Natalie Portman (2004's Closer, 1996's Everyone Says I Love You): "This could be a total actress thing, but for me it was in Notting Hill (1999) when she said, 'I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.' "

Dermot Mulroney (1997's My Best Friend's Wedding): "Her standing with some guy (himself in My Best Friend's Wedding) on the top deck of a boat in the Chicago River with her beautiful red hair flowing, her head thrown back and laughing. She's whipped out that laugh a couple of times to great effect. I hear she did it in that movie Pretty Woman, but I never saw it."

Marcia Gay Harden (2003's Mona Lisa Smile): "When she won her Oscar for Erin Brockovich. I won myself that year (for Pollock), and I was very proud of her for being celebrated for the whole of her career."

Sally Field (1989's Steel Magnolias): "One of the first thing you fall in love with is her laugh — big and wide open like she is."

Shirley MacLaine (Steel Magnolias): "When (director) Herb Ross would be mean to her and she still took it. I knew she had 'it' the moment we sat down at the rehearsal table with those cheekbones and her long, rippling, flowing hair."

Blair Underwood (2002's Full Frontal): "In Pretty Woman, she's watching something on the television set and breaks into this huge Julia smile and belly laugh that is so infectious and engaging. It's one of the reasons she's a superstar."

Garry Marshall (director, Pretty Woman, 1999's Runaway Bride): "It was a mistake in Pretty Woman where I told Richard Gere to slam the jewelry box down on her fingers to wake her up. And she laughed — such an honest laugh that we left it in the picture. It wasn't even acting, and people loved it."

Rita Wilson (Runaway Bride): "The amazing moment in Runaway Bride when she's walking toward the altar, and just as she's approaching, she does a perfect pivot to the back of the church."

Danny Moder (husband): "The births of our children. Definitely her as a mom."

Fan or not I have to cringe a little bit I must say. It seems like hollywood just loves to honour itself and it onlytakes being a celebrity to be honoured. I'm not sure what she's really done for cinema or even acting to be honest.

Amen.

It's weird though that all they can seem to talk about is her laugh. As if that makes someone a great actress.

Yeah... I know what you mean. I did love the comment Gary Marshall made

"It was a mistake in Pretty Woman where I told Richard Gere to slam the jewelry box down on her fingers to wake her up. And she laughed — such an honest laugh that we left it in the picture. It wasn't even acting, and people loved it."

I already knew this, but yes, that makes it one of my favorite things in the movie. The best parts are often the unscripted parts.

I never knew about it until now.

I don't know still. I tend to think that the credit for those films should go to the writers and for Notting Hill seeing as it was a comedy to Hugh Grant more than her seeing as he's the one with the comic timing and it really was his performance combined with the writing that made it funny. Just my opinion. But in general I just get sick of actors always congratulating each other for doing not much really. I think they're celebrated enough as it is.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. IMO those films would have been nothig without her. I think you're underestimating her contribution in Notting Hill

Erin Brockovich!

She's really had a lot of memorable roles at a young age. I think it's great that she's being honored now.

JazmenFlowers 10-15-2007 02:36 PM

what are 88s?

anyway, I love Julia. I like to act like I don't, but I do. I love all the movies you mentioned Pip...and I could watch Sleeping with the Enemy over and over and over...

Pip, I have to say that "Notting Hill" is one of my ALL-TIME favorite movies! Along with Erin Brockovitch! And of course who can forget about the "Oceans Movies- Oceans11- Oceans12" She's fantastic in those as well! I really love the chemistry between her and Hugh Grant, and of course Richard Gere too! She's great!;)

There's something inherently peculiar to me about Hollywood honouring a movie star. It just seems...like a waste of resources. Why would you honour someone who already makes tons of money, and is an ACTOR? It just seems silly.

Agreed. But ... it's what Hollywood's been doing for at least 80 years. They pat one another on the back quite a bit out there.

Serrart 10-16-2007 04:43 PM

I think they're right to celebrate her, she is a star, but not in the vulgar way the word is used today, but close to the way stars were in the Old Hollwood. She isn't a genius in acting but she can achieve good performances and has (like George Clooney, for instance) that kind of allure that make her win huge audiences with a smile.
