the only advice i can give you is..don't.

unless you are excellent with computers, or someone in your family is, it's such a hassle.

granted, I'm not that computer smart, but i've had nothing but problems :distress:

kathy1 09-25-2007 07:08 AM

thank you. so that means i should stick with the desk top that we already have?

michelle2677 09-25-2007 07:13 AM

I would just say, if you want to really get one-go ahead. But don't think it's gonna be a walk in the park. There are going to definitely be some frustrations ahead. Idk if it's worth it, but I have to say I enjoy lugging my computer anywhere i care to go. So I guess it is. I just wish someone had warned me of all the problems I was about to face  good luck!

Apparently whatever kind Michelle has, don't get that. As far as a router goes there are different kinds but the wireless router I have works with cable wireless internet, not the phone. When you do get it just make sure you have antivirus and antispyware software on it before you connect. Without the software it only takes 20 minutes after connecting to get your computer infected, regardless of what you are doing.

There are cable/DSL routers, so you should be fine. And yeah, I agree, ask Michelle was laptop she has and don't buy that one. I don't have any problems with laptops, I prefer one over a desktop computer, were it not for the fact that desktop computers are more equipped for gaming or photo and video editing, as they can hold faster processors, more memory and more harddrive space. I guess it depends on what you intend to use your laptop for.

i know there are wireless routers. do you need cable or a phone line to use them. i want to use it for the internet and email just like i use the desktop for.

Kathy... I work on the Geek Squad. I like Toshibas. HPs tend to crash a lot.

kathy1 09-25-2007 08:54 AM

Sure. Works best with an extra cable line.

you connect it to your cable modem and it sends a wireless signal to your laptop :)

hi kathy. do you intend on using dial-up internet, dsl internet, cable internet, or other?

if you intend on using dial-up internet, you will need to make sure that your laptop has a standard modem built in. on many systems now, that is an extra option that you will have to double-check for. and really, i have never heard of using dialup with a router. i just wanted to cover most of the bases. anywa!

otherwise: you'll use an ethernet cable to connect the modem provided by your ISP to the wireless router. in most cases, you will need to get a wireless network card to pop into the lap-top. the wireless router will send a signal to that card. if you want to take your laptop around with you and get online at various businesses, etc., your wireless network card will - in most cases - detect that a signal is available for you to pick up.

i have 2 desktop computers and a laptop. the desktops are more powerful and easier to fix, but it is convenient to carry the laptop around.

i don't think you should have a computer at all because there are studies that show that radiation can be deadly.

I couldnt have said it better. Laptops are for ease of carrying around. Personally, I wouldnt recommend it for any other reason. And yes, I like Macs too.

I have a new Sony laptop, I'm pretty happy with it. One of my friends works in Fire Dog - the Circuit City version of Geek Squad - and he told me that Toshiba, Sony, or Gateway are the best brand choices. Apparently HP's crash all the time. And don't even consider getting an Acer. According to him, anyway.

Indeed> Thats exactly what I said earlier. Toshiba is my choice, and HPs stink.

PS...Circuit City is the enemy.
