Board needs a makeover

I hope the new administrator will give the Ledge a fresh, new look. This has been the same way for as long as I can remember. Maybe it will bring some fresh faces and more appeal if it's shown as 'cared for'. Just a thought.

I disagree. I'm tired of sites trying to out-swank each other. This is simple to use and clean. I would hope that changes wouldn't go beyond background images. The forum scripts are just fine.

That is all. :wavey:

I should correct my thoughts. I mean the background drives me nuts. It's like any website owner. If you don't update with fresh, new images or product lines, people assume you don't care enough to maintain, so why come back. Not saying this totally applies to this board, but there is something to keeping things fresh with a new color, or some images, or just something. I don't think it's trying to out swank another site. Most are fairly simple to navigate and this one is no different.

No it isn't. It's chock a block full of bells & whistles, Sarah. The scripts & the jumpies & the doilies & the ten-thousand "features" can go for good, as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see the forum go back to a single forum in the old Matt Wright look. You read, you post & that's it. People's words are what's interesting to me, not their sigs (although I loved Lisa's Let Me Show You My Demos sig!).

I read/participate in message boards for the content in the posts by its like-minded members, not in anticipation and/or appreciation of frequent graphical face lifts. The board itself isn't the attraction, the posts are. Unless, of course, you are just that superficial.

As long as the functionality is there, why is even an issue?

Agreed fully. Don't mess with the format please!

To me, a board gives the impression of care and maintenance when it's well moderated and the members respectfully and intelligently and wittily post their interesting arguments, with plenty traffic and movement in the forums, as is perfectly the case on The Ledge.

Looks is just superficial hoopla and says little about quality of content to me.

If I remember correctly he started at least 5 threads on this very same subject.

irishgrl 09-21-2007 06:59 AM

and he got flogged in all of them. Apparently, then it wasnt the message so much as the messenger that was the issue?

on surface, it seems as tho the 7W folks LIKED the flashier graphics?? maybe??

kathy1 09-21-2007 10:14 AM

i think the board is fine the way it is . they could always make the background a different color. that's the only thing that i would change about the board.

chiliD 09-21-2007 10:18 AM

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Starling 09-21-2007 10:27 AM

Oh goodness, I only was suggesting a minor facelift with a different background, or some color...just voicing an opinion. Nothing was meant to induce being superficial, or shallow. Never implied it wasn't a good board, or that the content wasn't enough, either. No need to snap and snarl for thinking it could use some freshness!

Every however often, someone posts pretty much the same exact thing that you did. The response is always the same. Don't take it personally.

I don't want to see it change because, well, everything else on the 'net is constantly changing. It's nice to have a place to think of as old faithful.

And David... do you recall when the Ledge was all one very, very long page? Posts would get crossed and lost... and don't forget the NT threads. "Stevie is the best ever! NT" click the link, inside the page, all it says is NT ...

I'm not taking anything personally. I see where someone named Ethan had caused havoc on many boards and I didn't start this to create heightened feelings. As I maintain, the format is fine. I would prefer to see a bit of something new, whether that be a background of a different color, or an image or two...something that says, "I care about this and I want to keep it fresh without compromising."
I have been around the board community for a long time, too. I am not so keen when you log into another one and it's completely overhauled. So, that's why I'm suggesting the 'keeping it fresher' commentary only.

And just to add, that I'm not a fan of change, with some things, and yet here I am thinking that it might be good in this case. So just a few thoughts and not intended to raise hackles for those of you out there who like the tried and true.

lucky for all you curmudgeons out there, you can turn off all those flashy doo-dads and the whippersnappers' sigs!

But you agreed about the new background?

Anyway, no biggie and not starting any arguments. This is a touchy subject. Just thinking outside the box as that's what I have to do as a living for the most part.

kathy1 09-23-2007 10:51 AM

i just thought that my signature picture needed a change.

kathy1 09-23-2007 10:52 AM

i changed my avatar also did you notice?

What would keep the board "fresh" is if certain current members participated more. Starling, for example, in the 4 years that you've been a member, you've posted less than a hundred times. Yet you come in here and talk about the need for "fresh faces and a new look." I don't get it.

Nothing personal, I just don't get it.

I agree miss vicky - it seems that is generally new people or people who don't participate that much who call for these "make-overs".

I don't come here for the bells and whistles - i come for the people.
I find the board pretty easy to use and see no reason to go mucking it up with new designs.

Of course, just my opinion and the new owner Michelle probably has a few ideas of her own to implement and maybe one of them is new designs for the place - if so, of course i will adapt but i don't see the "look" of the board as a high priority, at least to me.

And in the humor department - maybe at the bottom of the main page, under who is online, under who is newest member, under whose birthday it is we could have the recent list of freshly bant people.

Oh, I agree.

That is definitely one feature I'd like to see. A list of newly bant people would be most helpful.

Being "around" and actually participating are not one and the same.

Yeah, the point is that you should actually become an active participant before you start suggesting changes.

Sarah 09-23-2007 01:38 PM

This is getting unnecessarily harsh.

Playing watchdog definitely wouldn't encourage someone to post more, now, would it? :distress:

I'm sorry you feel the need to be unpleasant in this. I was making a suggestion. If you read my posts I didn't declare an overhaul to the site.

If you read my initial post, you'll see that I, too, was making a suggestion - that the boards would seem more "fresh" if current members posted more often. I used you as an example because your post count was easy to check since it's listed above each of your posts in this thread.
