Stand Back single released!

I subscribe to emails from PerfectBeat.com (a dance/dj type online record store) and they just sent this email out to everyone. after reading the article, go buy the single - there aren't many to go around! Stevie is also featured on the main page as "the big one this week" -

As promised last week, the Stevie Nicks CD single for “Stand Back” is finally here! There is a funny back-story as to how this came in existence. Months ago when we first heard the mixes were being done, we contacted Warner to ask for the tentative release date. We were told that there were NO plans to release this as a single, and the mixes were done simply to market her new greatest hits CD, ‘Crystal Visions’. Over the next few weeks we had several conversations with Warner about the possibility of getting a limited pressing just for Perfect Beat. We were sure we had it.

Three weeks ago we got the call from Warner telling us it COULD be done, but it was going to take too long to get everyone to sign off on the project. So what they opted to do was ‘sneak’ the single out. They slated it for a full commercial release, but the catch was, they were only going to press up 1,000 copies. It was going to be distributed through the normal Warner distribution channels. We were told to immediately place an order (that day) to lock in a quantity and it would essentially be a Perfect Beat exclusive! Unfortunately, many retailers and online retailers get automatic quantities allocated to them for new releases so we couldn’t grab all 1,000 like we wanted to. We did however score HALF of them, 500 and they are now here in the building.

Warner has told us straight up, the ONLY reason this CD single is available is because of Perfect Beat. The truth is, CD singles are dying. But we are convincing labels to press up a limited number just for us die-hards that appreciate CD quality music, artwork, and a sweet package! So we present to you this very special release. We ask once again that you purchase this, even if you already obtained it through other shady means. We promise, it will make it easier and easier when we talk to Jive, Interscope, Epic, Sony and RCA and ask for special pressings as well. Did we mention “Edge Of Seventeen” is being remixed right now by Peter Rauhofer? Sure would be a shame if that never came out.

SUPPORT MUSIC….. BUY IT!

Whoah!! That's gonna be hot!!

MacMan 08-24-2007 10:33 AM

Thanks for the heads-up on that Jazmen!

Livia 08-24-2007 10:49 AM

I've already pre-ordered from Amazon.

LiamMcConville 08-24-2007 01:58 PM

Here's the cover, its the same as the iTunes release, but just in case someone doesn't have it Hi-Res:

I hope the Rauhofer remix surfaces on an official format, too. A lot of his stuff goes unreleased, which is a shame, because I think he's one in a very small pool of current remixers who could do Edge of Seventeen justice.

shackin'up 08-26-2007 01:09 PM

hmm, I've got an idea: bring out Landslide as a single.

Phoenix 08-29-2007 12:56 AM

Did anyone get his today? I looked everywhere, but it was no where to be seen. i guess i will have to order it. Does it have any EDITS on it? I mean, 13 minutes of stand back is great ad all, but sometimes, i just need 4.

No edits, unless you count Ralphi's Beefy Retro Edit which clocks in at 7:30! The rest are full mixes and dub versions.

The CD is going to be hard to get after a few weeks because only 1000 copies were printed. So best to snap it up now. I don't think most music stores will stock it because of its limited run.

I find it very hard to believe they only printed up 1000 copies- that's not even 1 copy for every 5 music stores/outlets in the country. And at the wholesale level that amounts to gross revenues of maybe $3500... I mean, after manufacturing expenses, distribution, legal fees, etc., I think Stevie stands to make, like, $0.89 from the whole enterprise. And that's not even factoring in the fees paid to the various remixers! Perhaps WB is trying to create an artificial scarcity to create buzz in the club music circuit; more than likely the printing presses are poised to crank out more copies to meet demand if necessary. There are probably 1000 queens below 23rd St. in Manhattan alone who would want a copy of this. :p

don't forget the single is also being sold on iTunes and the single made it to #2 on the charts before this release. from what I understand, these 1000 CD singles were pressed because Perfect Beat convinced WB to do so. Perfect Beat secured 500 of the copies and the other 500 were being distributed to various WB pipelines.

So where will the other 500 go? This is currently #117 on Amazon's ranking... that must mean they must have sold quite a few of these 500 already. That doesn't leave very much for the rest of these United States. It just seems implausible that WB would press and distribute a single that is basically a money-loser. And it's not like Crystal Visions was some enormous success... why would they throw good money after bad trying to promote it?

It's not clear if that ranks reflects CD singles or all CDs. I'm guessing it's reflecting a smaller category of discs.

I think Warner will, at best, break even with the release. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it at all. It all comes down to money. As for distributing costs, they're probably only shipping the disc out to a few outlets, the majority being online retailers. So if they're not shipping to stores, there are some major cost savings.

I received the same e-mail from Amazon (that Livia posted) about not having the CD single yet. I preordered from four different places. We'll see who shows up first.

Glittermoondust 08-29-2007 09:30 PM

I bought mine off of ebay and actually already have it.... although I probably paid too much for it :o

SandyMac 08-29-2007 10:55 PM

I bought mine! See Stevie, people still buy CDs :lol:;)

JazmenFlowers 08-30-2007 07:55 AM

I got an email from Perfect Beat yesterday that mine had been shipped.

JohnL 08-30-2007 08:06 AM

I got the same email

from PerfectBeat that mine shipped yesterday. I should have it by the weekend I hope.

SuzeQuze 08-30-2007 09:41 AM

I just ordered through Perfect Beat, this is cool!

Livia 08-30-2007 09:43 AM

I got this email from Amazon last night:

"We thought you'd like to know that we shipped your items, and that this completes your order."

Richard B 08-30-2007 10:21 AM

Got my email from perfectbeat yesterday reporting it shipped. I should have it today (they are also in LA).

Nope. You can use iTunes anytime. iPods are just an extension of your PC music library. So you can play them on your PC or burn them and make a audio CD.

Great sig pic. They've already shipped mine too and I just ordered!

SpyNote 08-30-2007 10:35 AM

It's too bad they didn't include the live version of Stand Back from iTunes. If they included it, I'm sure this release would have appealed to more fans.

especially since the quality of the version on iTunes is horrible.

be sure to leave good feedback on Perfect Beat's site if you purchased through them. I just left mine this morning.

I will when I actually receive the product. I'm already annoyed it did not come today, if it shipped yesterday. We're in the same city practically. So this means it did not actually ship. I order online frequently and this is the biggest pet peeve I have with online merchants.

that's fine, I was just leaving friendly reminder to leave feedback.

as for not getting it the same day, I'm not an expert, but I know that sometimes packages, though shipped from the same city, must go on a certain route before making it to your door. it may have been shipped from LA and must now go through channels in surrounding areas before actually being dropped at your feet. but I understand it being a pet peeve. I'm typically the same way. I have to calm myself down.

I have to calm myself too. But I ship and receive crap all the time in the LA area and if it's shipped USPS (First Class), it's there the next day. Maybe they missed the actual pick up yesterday, but in their system consider it shipped.

Too bad record companies lack vision. This maxi single seems to carter to DJ's only. While some will enjoy these extended versions, they are really for mixing purposes. I think most fans would have liked to have the radio edits available on CD. Like in other countries, Warner could have released two CD maxi singles:

CD 1
Stand Back Tracy Takes You Home Mix
Stand Back Tracy Takes You Home Dub
Stand Back Tracy Takes You Home Mixshow
Stand Back Ralphie’s Beefy-Retro Mix
Stand Back Ralphi’s Beefy Retro Edit
Stand Back Morgan Page Vox
Stand Back Morgan Pade Dub
Stand Back Dave Aude’s Extended Club Mix
Stand Back Hani’s Club Remix

CD 2
Stand Back Tracy Takes You Home Radio
Stand Back Ralphi's Beefy-Retro Radio
Stand Back Morgan Page Edit
Stand Back Hani’s Radio Edit
Stand Back Dave Aude’s Radio Edit
Stand Back (Live) (previously an iTunes exclusive)
Stand Back (Original Radio Edit)
Garbo (Original B-Side)

I also would have liked the CD to have been released with the original cover in digipack form - like the Crystal Visions CD+DVD combo.

you always have some of the best ideas.

I like the way Cher packages some of her remixes. she will have 4 or 5 remixes of the song that is the single and then 2 or 3 remixes of a deep cut off the album.

Cuts don't get any "deeper" than "The Nightmare." I mean, 21 years later I still cannot believe someone thought it was a good idea to do an extended remix of that song.

add this one to the "I don't get it" category, along with Silver Girl and WISYA. it's not amazing, but I don't think it's awful. but I do agree with you on the wtf with a remix. I was talking deep cuts as in Sable on Blonde or something...

There are remixes of SG and WISYA? Wow...who would'a thought...do you have the remixes by any chance? ;) As for The Nightmare remix and extended cut...i love it! The extended version is better than the album version imo.

I don't think JF was saying there are remixes to Silver Girl and When I See You Again, were you JF? I think JF was saying she don't care for the songs, correct me if I'm wrong. And if I'm right, "I cast a spell on you" for not liking Silver Girl :p I simply don't get why people dislike this song, makes no damn sense.

I know, Livia. I was being the usual pain in the *ss again. I just think it is SOOOOO boring rereleasing remixed old tunes. I wish she just released Rock and Roll -live as a single. Also rehash, but at least it would be something that is slightly surprising.

but hey, she'll never do that. It's not her songwriting credit. so no money.
