Elvis Presley

Thirty years since he died.

What are people's thoughts on the king?

gldstwmn 08-15-2007 06:18 PM

One of my favorite Capricorns...

JazmenFlowers 08-15-2007 06:20 PM

absolutely the most famous person to come out of my state and surely changed the face of music forever.

LiamMcConville 08-15-2007 09:34 PM

He most certainly did change Rock music forever, continues to influence gaggles of singers and bands to this day, and I still manage to think he's awful.

SNLB 08-15-2007 09:39 PM

Elvis is my all time favorite. I grew up listening to him and I saw him 4 times in Las Vegas at The Hilton when I was a kid. Ah, the good old days.

Miss him very dearly. :(

I thought I was your favorite Capricorn. But then so is Bowie.

Elvis is still cool. Love his version of Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Live).

I also will never tire of 'Suspicious Minds,' It's Now or Never.'

I think Elvis as a musician is highly overrated. He did record some incredible songs, but much of his work was not his own original material. However, he did completely change the look and sound of popular music and paved the way for much of what we listen to now, so for that he deserves his legendary status.

I agree. I was never a big fan of Elvis. However, he did change the music landscape in th 50's. I think of him now as more of an actor in cheap/silly movies.

I have an Elvis Tattoo and a Stevie Tattoo..

Okay, I know you're great at posting pictures. Anyway we can get a glimpse of your Elvis and Stevie tattoos?

danax6 08-16-2007 07:52 AM

I stayed at the Hilton when I saw Stevie in Vegas last March, and really, I think he was there too.

I'm not a big fan or anything, more of a greatest hits fan, but there is no denying his influence on the world of music, for that he will always be remembered.

My mother is from Tupelo, MS, and my grandmother graduated high school with his father, Vernon. Mother saw live the famous fairground footage of him in his gold suit. My uncle (on my father's side) sold him cars in Memphis, and my uncle and father have been to Christmas parties at Graceland.

Having said all that, I haven't known a life without Elvis-----stories, music, etc.
I think he deserves the credit that he receives. He was a pioneer in popular music. He has influenced EVERYONE that has gone after him----The Beatles, Bob Dylan, etc. Without an Elvis, it is possible that there wouldn't have been any of these other wonderful musicians, and they give Elvis the credit as well---time after time. Elvis was amazing on stage----what a performer!!!!!!!! But what I think is most special about Elvis is that amazingly beautiful voice. It is one of the best of all time, IMO.

May he be resting in peace, on this day of his passing---30 years ago. He is still missed and loved.:xoxo:

I don't consider him a musician at all. He didn't write any songs that I'm aware of, and he freely admitted he only knew a few guitar chords. I think as a performer, he was phenomenal. And that voice.....

My mom's the crazed fan in my family, I used to roll my eyes at her (OK, I still do.) But when I hear Elvis singing "Dixieland/Glory Glory Hallelujiah" I tear up. Yeah, I know, cuz I'm so religious & everything. Seriously, though, I do. It's the emotion in his voice.

I agree, I don't think many people do consider him a musician, he was a singer and entertainer. I absolutely love Elvis.

Get outta my head, Paula. I love to hear Elvis sing gospel, and normally, I do not enjoy that type of music. I love his version of "Peace in the Valley." :o

Wow what great stories!!!! You were touched by Elvis greatness! LOL. I loves me some Elvis. My Mom was/is a fan and I grew up listening to Elvis music. At Christmas time the music we play are the Elvis Christmas albums. He was the original American Idol. No, he didn't write music but that voice--nothing like it before or since. Forget about the white jumpsuits and the Vegas era and all of that. Just listen to the voice. Simply Amazing.

Does anyone remember the Rock & Roll documentaries that were aired (I think it was like 6 or 7 parts)? It's been running on Vh1 Classics lately. Anyway, there's an entire sequence in there where they ask any number of famous musicians who their biggest influence was. One after another they say simply, "Elvis".

Somebody sent me a video version. IMO Lisa over-sings in parts, but I don't think it's that bad overall. To be honest I much prefer it to the Cole father/daughter version of "Unforgettable".
