new album speculations
Just an attempt to turn the board back to topic: MUSIC. I really get unhappy over here lately.
It looks like Lindsey is working on the plans for the new album, with the tourguys as a back up. What do you think; - will he rework the songs he recorded with Rob Cavallo? We'll miss alot of rockfeel on f.i. Twist Of Fate and Shuffle Riff. - will he keep some of the GOS-tracks like they are? (GOS, TOF, ShuffleRiff) leave some UTSlikesongs, like Got To Get Away (which he mentioned in an earlier interview) and record Given Thing, Steve's Riff, maybe Deep Dense with the touringband and maybe some new stuff? I got a feeling he'll rework alot of things to capture the semi-acoustic feel of the tour......... |
Well, considering how he has been in the past about repeating himself, let's HOPE he DOESN'T try to make Under The Skin II. If I was at the production desk, I'd try to convince him to 1) come up with NEW things with a more "electric rock" approach, and 2) finish off the "rocker" tunes from GOS like "Gift of Screws" & "Twist of Fate"; toss in one of his leftover Stones covers...preferably "Gotta Get Away"; give us a studio version of "My Little Demon", and finally, a completed "Deep Dense". Let's have the remainder of the GOS tunes "officially" released so that we all can finally rid ourselves of the guilt of owning them in the first place.

If he did UTS II then I can see the reviews now "While the echo-y, whispery vocals and the stripped down guitars on Buckingham's last album, Under The Skin, gave it a feeling of intimacy they don't work as well on [Insert album title]. Infact, one wishes that Buckingham had lived up to his reputation as a "visionary" and attempted a new style instead of sticking to the same one that gave UTS such favourable reviews. Clearly the Lindsey Buckingham who refused to follow a formula on Tusk is long gone." Okay, so that might be an overly cynical review, but you get my point. I'd no doubt enjoy UTS II, but I'd always feel disappointed he didn't try something new. If I had to make a guess about the sound of this album I'd say it will be somewhere between UTS and OOTC in terms of style. More rocky, but still lots of the "stripped down" acoustic feel to it. That sort of album would be great. To be honest, I'll probably be happy with whatever direction he takes, as long as he takes on and doesn't end up treading water stylistically. |
Yeah, I think he will make a band-album with the modern-folk approach. As songs, TOF and Shuffle will fit in, but as productions maybe not. So I think he could rework them, and get them slightly more "transparent" by replacing some of the rythmguitar by acoustic strumming. I would hate it if all those manic leadlines would dissappear. Not to mention Mick's drumwork.
|
And, Chili, The fact that he's going to work with Brett, Neal and Wally will lead to another "style", or at least "approach", than on UTS. I just hope that he will have less "space" for, as he calls them, productionvalues. Only a more down-to-earth vocal style could lead towards something that differs completely from UTS.

I'm actually hoping Lindsey's next release is of the acoustic variety with the addition of the texas dvd. Then I am hoping for an electric mix on the next one. Lindsey has/will have more than one more cd to issue. |
i say no to a studio version of my little demon. :distress:
yes to some of the other GOS leftovers.. namely, wear you down. i *love* that demo. it's so quirky. i haven't found any indication in any of the interviews that he's even considering a UTS II. He's said from the start that the next one will be a rocker. and, i'd like to see where he talks about going into the studio with the tour band. i've missed this information somehow. |

Don't feel attacked dear, you're one of the few reasons I'm still around over here and you know it. I'm just entitled to feel unhappy with the loss of activity by Madformac, Mari, Gaius, Trackaghost, Stefan, Wondergirl, Seteca etcetera. Well, as long as I can follow Lindsey's tour through you lucky guys, there's a reason to stay. I'm just flabbergasted by the attention every gossipthread gets. Now, BTFLCHLD, give us your vision on the new album, your hopes, your wishes, your thoughts. |

Sarah, In one of the threads about the recent shows, Brett told to a fan that They were working on the next album and that he had heard some of the stuff and he ranked that as great.
Lindsey told around the release of UTS about that the next one would be a rocker, but later on he nuanced it and said something like we'll have to see where that one is going, because of the critical acclaim of UTS. I don't keep track of sources, I read them when they pop up, but I'm not collecting. I guess on lindsey's site you can find alot of articles that contain blurbs about the next album. |

He also mentioned he came up with some new material in the meantime, so I guess we can expect a mix a la UTS, only with a different musical style this time. Can't wait. :D |

I have so enjoyed UTS and I still will for a long, long time. It's an incredible piece of art, but on this next album, he needs to rattle some windows. |

You know I'm going to express an unpopular opinion here but at this point I actually don't want the "big rock" album from Lindsey, I want something even more lo-fi. I want him to do a Paul Westerberg and release something like Folker - real loose and no frills, recorded in his bedroom/bathroom/whatever stuff.
I know last year he gave us his version of the acoustic album (which in reality wasn't that acoustic at all) but I just want something way simpler from him. I know you guys are probably thinking Tusk, and in a way I am too, but I'd like it to be way more spontaneous than that - which is something he loves to talk about (hilariously enough in rehearsed speeches) but boy can he not do. I can't imagine we'd ever get the Neil Young approach from him - rehearse it once, record it while it's still fresh, with one take to capture the magic - but I can dream can't I? The thought of him returning to something super-polished and produced depresses me. The fact that he mentions he listens to Thom Yorke and then goes and guests with the likes of Vanessa Carlton and the dreadful Little Big Town (there I said it, they really, really suck) makes me sad. I really think he's better than that. Maybe I'm being a complete snob about it, I don't know, he could surprise me. The Mac is dead, Christine has retired, Stevie is a nostagia act: I'm just pinning my hopes on Lindsey shunning the popular vote for the artistic one. |

Seeing the Mac is dead anyway, he can do that after this one. |

No, you're probably right, it just seemed for a while like everyone was super excited about the prospect of this big guitar-wailing, rock album he's apparently going to release, where I wouldn't mind him going even further with the sound he cultivated on UTS. Not that I'm totally against something rawk, but I'd just like that to be simpler and more stripped down too, you know, just a guitar, bass and drums, although in a way I'm asking Lindsey not to be Lindsey here - the man loves to produce! I guess we can only wait and see. |

We've said this before Gerald, but Lindsey needs to work with a producer who will battle him on these things, who will say "Leave it as it is, the songs sounds good without any frills!". Don't get me wrong, I do love Lindsey's production work, but the one thing we haven't got from Lindsey at this point is something bare bones in style - I would have thought that in itself would be a challenge he might enjoy undertaking (although he needs to leave the vocals alone!). That said, didn't his record company want a more rock album over an acoustic one? So I can't imagine we'll get what I'm talking about. |
Still, even if it IS going to be a rock-album, he can choose for a stripped down straight fromtheguts rocksetting, a fourpieceband like he performs with right now. I mean, he can sound very down-to-earth fragile-but-ballsy with these guys. The bootlegged Turn It On, IKINW and SHN prove it. I'd love to hear a folkrockalbum in this "Live"-style. Including the raw vocals.
I bet Gaius will respond soon with a remark about pre-recorded or sampled tracks that he uses in the live-mix... |
I don't want a super-produced album either. Stripped down rock, as has been mentioned here already, is what I'd like most and also what I expect most from him at this stage. I'd guess there will be some lead guitar, but no massive wailing solos. I'd be shocked if we got something like Murrow or Come on the new one.

Well, since Mr. Buckingham has already said in interviews from last year that the next album was going to be an electric guitar record, whereas UTS was an acoustic guitar record, I believe him. I'm actually very much looking forward to that next album.
I'd love to hear quite a few of the "Gift Of Screws" sessions included in there, and all the work of his that he recorded with producer Rob Cavallo has turned out to be good material, so let's hope he brings Mr. Cavallo back. "Twist Of Fate" (even though it might be titled differently) has classic rock radio all over it - most likely he's filled the ba-ba-ba-part at the end with real lyrics by now. Same goes for "Deep Dense", which is my pick for 1st single of the remaining GOS material. "Given Thing" is then 3rd in my line for inclusion on this disc. As far as the Riffs are concerned, "Shuffle Riff" is a pretty dramatic and pretty effective tune, and I hope he has already finished it. "Steve's Riff a/k/a Wear You Down" is also pretty effective, but somehow, I think it would work better as a duet with Stevie in a Mac setting. And "Gift Of Screws" would be OK to be included, too, but not at the expense of newer, more melodious material. Those GOS demos that were the most fully produced at the time they were bootlegged, have now all been released, so I'm more curious at the time about the new songs that haven't been bootlegged so far! |
ready for a rocker. love the acoustic uts & still shocked he did it & it totally suits him but i want to hear some of the old aggressive lb. he doesn't have to be pissed off at the world to act like it  i know you're happy linds, but fake it if you have to. rock socks

A polished album wouldn't worry me, because we all know that a polished Lindsey album always has emotions raging behind the surface. I find that more fascinating than just doing a stripped down confessional album (or an album of pure sugary polish). As for working together with his touring band, he already tried that after the OOTC tour and obviously didn't like the results. It might work this time though, because they're all essentially extra studio/touring hands who probably won't prevent Mr. Ego from doing his thing. And Lindsey's not the same he was in 1993 either. |

If you read back I also said I would quite like a rock album, just a more stripped down rock album. I just would like to hear something that isn't over-produced. I don't see what's depressing about that, in fact I'd say it would be rather refreshing him releasing a basic rock record at this point. I personally would find it fascinating to see if he could actually pull that off. |
Maybe it is time for a (Lindseysongsof)Tusk II. :D With the existing material I see that's possible.
|
Without being murdered, and in light of La Nicks recent comments about never doing another Mac album... Can we PLEASE get Twist of Fate turned into a duet for this album? One last hoorah for BuckinghamNicks in the studio.
Wouldn't actually mind if he shelved the whole thing and actually remastered BN, or even, given some guidelines (set by us), make BNII. |

I agree, gerald, on the live bit with the shows...and actually the idea of Lindsey releasing a LIVE UTS cd with the LIVE TEXAS dvd is very, very appealing. Having said that, whether Lindsey decides to do acoustic, electric or a mix on the new cd is, of course, up to him; however, either way, I want his hands/ears firmly in place producing his sound. The way he begins his work and brings it into something all together else is what I find mad appealling about his music... fascinating even. I love the painter Lindsey and I don't ever want that to stop just for the sake of maintaining a 'first-cut'

I couldn't have said it better, Michelle. This is his time and he's finally taking it and and hopefully doing as much as he can/wants to with it. We all know he will never gain the spotlight like Stevie has but he's got something going right now and it's picking up speed...even if it's just little by little. After the DVD release, another new album who knows the possibilities. More music? More touring? I hope he gives himself a few more years to just be a solo artist honestly. I'm glad he's comfortable in his own skin right now with performing and writing/recording. It's a dream come true for me! |
Short intermezzo: I am very pleased with the responses in this thread. I can't remember I started a thread that gained this amount of posts with interesting content. Very fun to read. keep those thoughts coming!
Do you think Lindsey recorded some more tracks on the road on that mobile 16-track that asked for a rock-treatment, so he kept them away from UTS?? Or did he write during the stops in this tour? |

Well, you know this thread is for speculation-no solid answers asked!
I think he actually recorded bits and pieces of riffing and hooks during the SYW tour too. He MUST have been inspired by the heavy rockpieces he did night after night, even if they were automaticpilot for a big part. He really enjoyed them. And- when he's on a creative flow I can't imagine that he's just fingerpicked his head off on the acoustic-only. A real painter gets all sorts of fill-in-ideas and -impulses. I bet he's been playing/recording those sketches too. |
I bet he can't help but mess around and create while he’s on the road. To me, the energy of the gigs on a whole (the audience and a great band backing you up) would be fueling creativity offstage (especially for a more rock oriented album). He always seems to be attached to his guitar. But, in recent interviews he has commented on loving the response with UTS so much and possibly wanting to explore that more “stripped sound/style” further. In the last interviews I’ve heard/read, he just doesn’t sound too sure about the rock concept anymore. It seems very iffy to me. I don’t know if he realized we fans were going to love UTS so much and respond so positively (of course we know he hoped so)…the sister rock album was his safety net. Now he’s gotten a little more confidence…some wind under his wings. Now we just have to see where it takes him.
I won’t lie…I want that rocking CD, but I won’t be depressed if it isn’t. On a different topic...I hope the Texas DVD has some excellent special features. I know they filmed interviews with him, but who knows what made it on there. I would love to see a sound check or behind the scenes even if it's for that one show. At least we have that to look forward to while waiting for his next masterpiece. :woohoo: |

If Stevie doesn't want to do another Fleetwood Mac album, I have no qualms about her calling it a day with the band. I can easily see Mick & John just joining in with Lindsey's current touring band and calling it Fleetwood Mac. Or, if Lindsey wants to keep the direction he's going and not wanting to be under the Fleetwood Mac umbrella anymore, I can see Mick & John reforming Fleetwood Mac with Billy & Rick. Actually, at this point, I'd almost prefer an all-male Fleetwood Mac again. |
