jones beach show
how was the show last night and is there any photos?
|
Cloudy day with occasional sprinkles- check.
A stiff, gusty wind blowing off the ocean- check. Temperatures hovering in the low 50's- check. High tide- check. The front sections were under a foot of water due to high tide washing in from the bay side. Security was not letting any additional people up front due to electrical hazards (wires and transformers under water). After a couple of attempts I got past security to my seat- luckily I was one of the few stupid/smart enough to wear shorts and sandals- I had no problem at all with the high tide. I actually quite enjoyed wading through the water, electrical hazards be damned! Anyway, by showtime, the temperature had fallen, the tide was still high, the wind was blowing harder, and out comes this tiny little hippie chick in black between Jimmy and Lenny. Mama was wearing this horrendous black coat (of course) with harlequin/clown sleeves and this lavendar crocheted doily-looking thing sewn on the back. But to top it off she tucked all of her hair in this black velvet schmatta- almost like the blue version in the "Blue Lamp" photo sessions, but much less poofy. Under all of this she wore the standard mini-skirt sparkly tights ensemble, the "real chunky" boots (as opposed to the faux chunky boots), velvet gloves and every black scarf east of the Mississippi. She was clearly miserable when she hit the stage singing "Stand Back"- with the mic stand ribbons flying around, her scarves blowing in every direction, her bangs flying into her eyes, along with the blinding stage lights, etc. After SB she mentioned that this was the coldest show she had ever performed. Needless to say, the schmatta was on for almost the entire night. Later, for "Edge" she had on this leopard bowler hat with netting along with the white Edge dress and jacket. If you squinted hard enough, it was almost like the Rock a Little album cover come to life. Anyway, the rest of the show was pretty much as before, except both FFG and "Enchanted" were dropped  . I guess they finally figured out that people just weren't into seeing "Enchanted" anymore. That and the fact that they probably wanted to stay on stage for as little as possible due to the harsh weather. Vocally she was pretty much on, and she does go for those HSML notes. "My lonely.... WHOAH-ONE!" For whatever reason (probably because Jones Beach is a bitch to get to on a weeknight and she had already played in NJ the night before), the place was only about two-thirds full. The entire upper deck was empty, but the lower sections were pretty much full. I would say this is a respectable showing, considering the high ticket price and it's a weeknight. The last FM show there was only about 10 percent fuller. I must say that this was the most fun I've had at a Stevie show. Standing in a foot of water, which was actually rather neat, no security guards around, no crowding or shoving, etc. Yes, the setlist was predictable, but at least it was fun to anticipate what other cold-weather outfit she would bring out of her closet. At the end, you could tell she was relieved that it was over, and she thanked the crowd for standing in water and freezing. She said the fact that we stayed with her despite the harsh conditions "restored her faith in music." Awwww.... I hope Friday in Camden is much calmer. Anyway... pictures and video are coming... |
It was effing freezing, very, very windy. The whole front section was flooded, people rolled up their pants and waded into their seats. Chris Issak took his shoes off and made his way through the crowd. I always go to Jones for concerts, and this had to be the coldest and windest I have ever sat through.
Stevie came out all bundled up, heavy jacket, scarf, gloves and hat. She said something along the lines of this being the most clothing she's ever worn on stage, and probably the first time she's ever worn a hat. The show was excellent, Stevie was in decent voice. I thought the version of "Landslide" was the best I have heard in years. I'm at the point where I could careless if I ever heard it again, but she did it beautifully last night. Made me fall in love with it all over again. The picture montage behind it was very nice as well. The show was far from sold out. We had seats in the very top section and before we even sat, they moved us right down to the second tier. I didn't bring my camera cause we were supposed to be so high up. I did take some of "Standback" on my cell. I'll try to upload it when I get home tonight. |
Ed,
This is the best written review I have ever read. I can't wait to see pics of these outfits. |
Wow- what an interesting concert experience! Can't wait to see pics!!

That sounds so cool - I'd love to see Stevie @ the beach, standing in the water! WOW!
|
I thought they didn't sell any tix up in the top...like the very very top...like venue's policy...A lot of people left early because it was so cold...
I just called up the venue and 6, 000 tickets were sold (that was just the girl's guess) out of 14, 000 people |
re: jones beach show
I had tickets all the way up in the front row mezzanine, but when we got up there, because it was extremely windy and so damn freaking cold the security guy told us that they were moving that whole section down one level. So, we ended up sitting in the second stadium level. The security person there told us to sit in row MM any place you could find a seat. Our seats actually ended up being almost dead center, but from row MM up those seats were being used for the mezzanine people. It wasn't a sold out show by any means, but it was a pretty decent showing for a weeknight and a cold June day!

Can't move on with day until I see pics of Stevie in funky outfits......:wavey:

It was just nasty. I've been to Jones Beach many times (and many times in June) and I know how cold it can get (and I was totally prepared for it with layers of clothing) but yesterday was the absolute worst. And the concert was great. I actually thought Stevie looked very pretty in the hat and the layers...I've seen her in much stranger outfits and the clothes absolutely fit the mood of what was going on weather-wise. But, it was really uncomfortable (if not somewhat dangerous) for the people in the floor section (me being one of them). I was right by the stage and looked down and all these wires were UNDER water. I thought...that can't be good. The video guy assured me it was fine but, hey, he was on the stage--didn't have his bare feet in the water. But, it's one concert I will never, ever forget, that's for sure. |

The coat she wore for FM in Jones Beach was gorgeous. It didn't have a croqueted doily looking thing on the back though.

Edge of 17 walk club.
Wow What an experience, I had at this show,
1 The weather, thank god the rain hold up,but cold, I had my bright red winter jacket again, last time at the Fleetwood Mac show.I thought that day was colder. 2 Traffic, wasn't bad as I thought, got in parkinglot at 5:30, 3 Hightide, my seats were flooded out, 4 Chris Issak took his shoes off and made his way through the crowd and walked right by me twice. 5 The Climax, Got to shake Stevie's hand , WOW after all these years it happen.:blob2: :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: Now for the Quick review. When I got to my seats , I said to my self, wow. some people were up there all ready before the security stop more people for trying to get seated during Chris's set,Tying to enjoy his tunes. he was good. I was pissed, walking around cursing to my self, saying I will never coming back here again and saying what i do now. so I sat impationly in the upper level watching the tide and security, ok Chris's set ended I got up and checked with security to see whats up before Stevie starts, so me and couple of other fans standby to see what will happen, in about 10 minutes The security told all of us, to go to our seats.so I had my boots on anyway, I splash my way LOL up to my seat and sat on top like everbody else did. Oh what a relief. There is no way i'm going to pay premium tickets to sit in the cheap seats,NO not for Stevie,if it was somebody else, yes will go nice warm dry home. Ok Stevie came out bundled up,ooh she look adorable.Photos please,Her girls were hot in their wardrobe and thier long hair blowing in the wind.ok Standback started playing , still sitting on top,the tide starting to go out, Then I finally see the floor around when I think Rhiannon was playing, please correct me if i'm wrong. Hum there is some magic here.so I got back on the floor with soggy boots, thank god I had a dry pair of sneaks and socks in the car.As iI alway said Stevie's band is HOT. I think she will be lost without Waddy there ,or less Lindsey was there. or sing A-cappella with the girls , oh I will enjoy that,ok Her voice was in tune, the sound and video was excellent, which I'm supprized do to the conditions. as I remember at the FM show years earlier everthing was shot including Stevie's voice, she was sick. Mick's mike was dead, the video screens were blank.Hats off for Stevie's Crew.ok The Climax, EO17 started playing, I was watching the security gaurds some people got pulled out of the isle, and the gaurds disapeared at that time I waltz my way up to the front and wittle my way into the croud, yea I had my bright red Jacket on for Stevie will see me.so the walk started Stevie make her way across the cold stage , poor thing, she must be freezing by now.so I had my hands up and out.she was geting closer and closer, I was geting excited by the second.and she came in front of me, and It happend I think I said I love you Stevie.I don't remember I was in heaven,HaHaHa I felt weak and good sensation, and the crowd around me was holding me up. over 20 plus years I've been waiting for this to happen.ok I'd stayed in my place for the last to songs in a daze.Beauty and the Beast started playing. I was almost in tears as I thinking of my older sister at 56 years old battling with breast cancer and this happening tonight. So I want to say Thank you Stevie for all the years of entertaining me. |
And the wind became crazy...
I know that others might not see it the same way, but these are my thoughts on this show - I was there also and had a GREAT time! There were some things that Stevie and the band did that I really admire. It seemed that when Stevie first came out, she did a "caricature" of a woman caught in a windstorm - she held onto her hat in an exaggerated way, pretended the wind was about to blow her over, etc. So in other words - and I doubt many will be surprised by this - she turned it upside-down and turned something "bad" into something useful - she took advantage of the bad situation, and made what she could of it. Then at the end she said something like, "I don't think you have ANY idea how hard it was for you to stay here - thank you!" As always, she took the bad and used it as a way to teach, and made the best of a bad situation - It seemed to me that in between her lines, she was telling us, "why NO, as a matter of fact I DIDN'T consider stopping even for a MOMENT; I DIDN'T think of our own (considerable...) discomfort up here even for a MOMENT - you don't get to be successful in the rock music business (or anywhere) by thinking that way." Of course, she DID think those things, she DID feel tempted to cut it short, call it a night, re-schedule, etc. - but she didn't. And here's the thing - I'm not sure how many people were there, but it was far less than the grand-smacking legendary total of 6 freaking thousand that the venue can hold. I looked around, and i THINK maybe there were only a thousand people there - two thousand tops. That's one percent of Fleetwood Mac in their heyday. I literally doubt Stevie made more than 5 thousand bucks last night. It was chump change, she could take it or leave it. And yet, even with the harsh conditions added to that, she knocked it out, and belted it out like there was no tomorrow. She gave us the SAME show that she would have given 60,000 screaming fans at Madison Square Garden. She poured her heart into it, and she didn't miss a note, and imo her harmonies were DEAD-on. Ditto for all of her backup musicians. There was ONE point where Waddy Wachtell maybe wavered just a LITTLE bit - but GEEZ it was cold, I don't blame him. But for the most part I was VERY impressed - he was RIGHT on the beat; even when he was doing the intro to Edge with a cold wind trying to blow him off the stage, it was still as incredibly precise as always. (And no, I really don't think it was a recording, thank you very much.) So I just love the rock-on attitude, and I love that they were THAT determined to give us "our money's worth," even though it was "no skin off their backs." And I love how Stevie grabs something annoyingly bad like this and seizes it as an opportunity to teach. And we all still had a ball DESPITE the bad weather - including Stevie - I SWEAR to you that it seemed like she had a grand old ball - LOTS of fun. And she seemed VERY cheerful and not tired at all. Couple of other details - Listen to Gold Dust Woman - CLOSE! There's some interesting changes there. And she took out the end part where she screams and so on and replaced it with some VERY interesting interaction between her voice and Waddy on the guitar - her voice kind of goes up and down the scale as his guitar notes sort of "chase" her voice, except going down when she goes up, etc. - it was wonderful. It was really great to hear "How Still My Love." I really enjoyed that a lot, and I felt the harmonies were great. Actually I felt the harmonies in ALL of the songs were great, especially of course at the end of "Landslide." Anyway - awesome show, bad weather or not. And Long Island doesn't suffer from major suckage, I SWEAR! I HOPE she'll be back to Jones Beach, because on a GOOD day it really is a beautiful venue. |

 WELLLLL, all-righty. :woohoo: I was just throwing a random number out there. But I can tellya that for whatever it's worth, Mick claimed in his book that in their heydey, Fleetwood Mac once did a show in Germany with literally a hundred thousand fans there - some sort of sports stadium. Somehow I doubt this will register in Stevie's mind as the biggest show she ever did. |

Holy mother of Jesus. I didn't know she turned the back of it purple!!!!
Now that is a change for Ms. Stevie Nicks. Holy Christ! |
Wait a minute?!?!?! Is that a hood I see coming form that jacket?? Did she actually bust out the SOTM hood?
|
Jesus, why does it take a cold night to bring out these clothes! I love it all. Is that a clothespin holding that hood or beret or whatever on her head?
|
I kind of like the crochet thingie. It's different and pretty.
I love that her hair looks all messed up, I guess because of all the wind. She looks awesome. |

When she went over to the girls during Edge, she did a little dance with each of them. Very cute.

Not too fond of the purple crocheted thing she had going last night though... Totally excited about the SOTM hood thing, but I don't like the pins, it's too 'little red riding hood'. At least make the pins not visible, Stevie. And here we were all thinking she only brings the same damn outfits to every venue. |
