How You Became A Fan..... Your Stevie Story
I know we all got into Stevie/FM in various ways throughout the years. I thought it might be kind of cool if we shared our stories of how we became fans and all of that. I'll start off.
My family was in vacation in Destin in 2003. The 5th(or maybe it was the 6th) Harry Potter book was coming out, and we went to Barnes and Noble to find out information on the late night party because we were thinking of going. As we were leaving, my dad picked up Say You Will. I had assumed that this c.d would be like one of many that my parents pick up. Not my kind of thing. I had heard of Fleetwood Mac I suppose and would later find out that I knew a few of their songs (the radio hits). So we were heading back to the rental house and they popped in the c.d. I took the album booklet at was following along with the words, and they captivated me. Within 5 minutes, I REALLY liked this band. My fandom grew slowly and by Christmas of that year, I was given Timespace and loved it. We say FM twice during SYW, the better of the two was in Nashville, 8th row or so. I was too scared to wave or anything, we were so close. Now, I listen to Stevie everyday and am entranced by her music. It's crazy to think that if my dad hadn;t picked up that c.d, this whole love would have never started........ Pretty Amazing~~~ Much Love, Ethan |
I started getting interested in Fleetwood Mac's music when I was in high school. Rumours was out. Dreams, Go Your Own Way, You Make Lovin' Fun and Don't Stop were all over the radio, seems all of the time. One day, I was listening to the radio and a song came on I'd never heard before, but it caught my ear right away so I listened to it all the way through. I just kept thinking, "I hope they give the title of the song and artist after they play it" because you know when you want to know the name of a song, the DJ rarely tells you. It doesn't happen to me very often when I hear a song for the first time and have to put it my record collection RIGHT NOW! It was a song called I Don't Want To Know by Fleetwood Mac. That was it! If that song was on the Rumours album, I was going to buy it. I ran down to the mall and Musicland had the best selling album of the time all over their store. I picked it up and checked out the songs and sure enough, I Don't Want To Know was on there. I had no idea who any of the individual band members were at the time, but I took that album home and wore it out and I learned fast who they all were! Stevie became my favorite right away. God, I remember that they (re)released Buckingham Nicks after Fleetwood Mac hit the big time (thanks to Stevie and Lindsey!) and I saw it at a Music Plus store. Whoa, what was this? I bought it and was in Stevie heaven!
Today, I'm listening to Stevie on her special day. She is just AWESOME! Thanks, Stevie (and Fleetwood Mac!) and Happy Birthday! :wavey: |
My Dad. I have listened to Fleetwood Mac since I can remember. There are videos of me dancing around to "Save Me" when I was little...so funny lol. My Dad and I go to a lot of shows...Stevie and FM...it's our thing that we do together.
|
I listened to Silver Springs off The Dance album. It turned me gay. And I've loved her and the band ever since.
|
I suppose I was 6 years old when it happened. It was 1976, and my oldest sister Linda (who was 22 at the time) had bought the FM 'White Album' on vinyl and also 8-track. Due to the big age difference, she assumed alot of responsibilty in our household and took good care of me. Anyway, she was always taking my sister Robin and I places in her blue '72 Pontiac Firebird. We'd be in the backseat, and she'd be driving and blasting her 8-tracks. It was always music, in her car. So we'd drive to Jones Beach in the summer, or even just to go to the store or one of her girlfriends houses or my aunts house- but the important thing to her was that there was always music playing. And it was alot of different music, there was FM, but there was also Donna Summer, Electric Light Orchestra, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Gloria Gaynor, Barry White, Traffic, Charlie Rich, and so many others.
So that's really how I came into FM- it was through my sister and it just sort of soaked in. We'd sing 'Rhiannon', and 'Blue Letter'. The next year, she bought 'Rumours', and we'd sing 'Don't Stop', 'Dreams', 'Go Your Own Way' 'You Make Loving Fun' and 'The Chain'. |
I was beaten upside the head by my sister with an 8 track of the white Fleetwood Mac album.

I vaguely remember Rumours playing around the house early in my life, however, the defining moment came when I was about 8 years old. It was my parents wedding anniversary, and my mom wanted to do something really nice for my dad, so she coached my sister and I (in secret) to learn to sing 'Leather and Lace.' The only problem is that I HATED singing Don Henley's part and would always begin to sing Stevie's.
Come to think of it, that might be when I became gay too... |
I was a huge kate bush fan, but my then BF beat me over the head with the rumours album. Didn't care for it that much but, two years later, LOVED Tusk.
After 1983 interest cooled off, occasionally the flames are fanned again, most notably by Lindsey though. |
I'm 17 and been listening to Mac since I was in the womb. My Dad was a big fan. Gypsy was the first song I heard and LOVED it so when my Dad replaced his cassettes of Rumours and Mirage I just HAD to have them. I was about 4 or 5. That was pretty much it until 2001 ish when Trouble in Shangri-La came out and POTU was on Charmed. I bought Bella Donna straight after (even though it didn't have planets on...I'm strange...) and my Dad bought The Wild Heart in a sale which I stole about a week after he bought it. I got OSOTM and RAL on cassette when I was working in a charity shop and eventually just gathered all the stuff I have now...which is everything lol.

add me to another "The Dance" made me do it list...I had just graduated high school and went to spend the summer with my aunt. this was like the summer of awakenings in so many ways. I left home that May and returned a totally different person in every way imaginable in August. anyway, I had been seeing the "never break the chain" promos all summer. my aunt told me that she had invited some friends over to watch a concert on TV and wanted me to watch. so, we sat down and for the next couple of hours I was spellbound. I went out the next day and bought everything I could find. 10 years later, I'm still as in love as I ever was...10 years older...a little wiser and so much happier having Stevie in my life.
|
Saw Fleetwood Mac on Midnight Special since I was allowed to stay up on the weekends. Loved Stevie on that and loved Lindsey's kimono top. lol Heard alot of their songs on the radio. The whole Stevie/Lindsey relationship was very interesting and romantic to a teenager from a very small town. When Rumors came out, I loved the album cover since I was into dance and ballet. Their songs were being played everywhere!!! It was not difficult to become a Fleetwood Mac fan in the mid 70's.
|
I think it's great that The Dance brought so many new fans. I wonder if FM thought that would happen. I thought the '97 thing was a wonderful nostalgia trip and gift to longtime fans, but never occurred to me that it would reach a new audience.

I am so glad they did it because I really don't know that I'd have ever found their music otherwise. at that time I was so wrapped up in Broadway and musicals that I don't think I'd have stepped out of that box into rock. and you know...it's a testament to their music and power. at the time, I knew nothing of Stevie's "old" voice or the way she tore up Rhiannon. I was in love with her anyway. so, imagine when I first heard those Rhiannons...I experienced things I can't discuss...being a Christian woman and all... |
ok. I've said it before and I'm gonna say it again. My grandparents had never heard of FM. never HEARD of them  I mean, i can understand never being able to place a song of theirs. but never heard of the name?!!  it just baffles me. how could they have lived through the 70's and not heard of them? and they are fairly hip people!!! I just don't get it. :distress:
well, they have now! thanks to me :D |

My parents...thanks to them I love a lot of the bands that were "big" in the 60s and 70s...and gee...odly enough it's still those bands that are selling out and putting a lot of new bands/artists to shame.
Anyway,...my brother and I grew up listening to the Mamas & the Papas...Fleetwood Mac....Carole King.....Doobie Brothers.....Three Dog Night...CHicago...the Byrds....CSN(&Y sometimes...)......Zeppelin......Linda Ronstadt...and THANK GOD our parents had good taste in music. I didn't realize until I was a teenager that it was Stevie singing all of my favorite songs (I saw her on tv during FM's 97 tour). THe rest is history....I really came to respect Stevie not only for being such a phenominal poet and singer, but also for being a class act........ |
Okay, this is an embarassing thing to admit, because it's a true reflection of my own ignorance. I had watched the "Behind the Music" for Fleetwood Mac when it first aired, but I overlooked any chance of absorbing the music by thinking to myself, "Wow these people have crappy relationships. They look miserable." I was 15 or so, and then some of you may remember this Meryl Streep movie- One True Thing? I was a diehard Bette Midler fan, and I just ASSUMED the track used briefly in the trailer was her single, "My One True Friend" for the movie. I remember first hearing the song (which I later learned was "Landslide") and thinking 1. Bette's voice sounds so different and better than I ever heard it and 2. This song is gonna be a hit. Of course, it already was a hit some twenty years before, and Bette's single was utter crap.
So flash forward, a year later, I'm in college and this gay male classmate comes over to see my Bette/ Babs collection. He tells me, "Oh honeyyyy I love Babs, but let me TELL you. Check out Stevie Nicks and her Enchanted box set. She's the one woman I'd ever f*** and she could turn me straight in a minute." Thus began my Stevie-addiction and Babs/Bette replacement therapy. And as for the "one woman I'd like to f***," I uttered that same phrase two years ago in the Hamptons and the entire experience led me to meeting Stevie at Jones Beach. So in short, it had to be "Landslide" that got me hooked. By "Trouble In Shangri-La" I was a diehard. |

For me, I became a Stevie Fan sometime in the 90's. I was riding in the car with a friend and saw this cd and was like, who is that lady with the red hair wearing a blanket?? (Stevie's Timespace cd) My friend told me all he knew about her and how fabulous she was. I said I don't know her music very well, but knew her from Fleetwood Mac. We listened to Stand Back and I think I was hooked on her since then and the Mac of course. I always have some Stevie cd in the car or cd that the bf has burned for me. It immediately puts me in a good mood when I hear that sultry voice :) |
MY TURN!!! My first memory of Stevie Nicks is from when I was about 6 or 7 years old and STAND BACK was always on the radio and my cousins thought it was cute that I sang the wrong lyrics "In the middle of my room I did not give a hoot". I also remember going to the salon with my mom and her telling the stylist she wanted hair done like in the new Stevie Nicks video. So mom was a fan. I also remember getting the single for Rooms On Fire when it came out.
I surely have a collectors gene and I think I have peaked with Prince and Madonna (been a fan / collector since I was a CHILD). My boyfriend brought my attention to Stevie and she is my newest focus that started about a year ago!! |
Good God I'm old!!! I first got into Stevie back around 1982, I heard both Rumours and Bella Donna and was hooked ever since. Around 1986 VH1 used to show the "Stand Back" video every morning before I left for school, high school!! For those that know nothing of it, back in the day VH1 and MTV were sister channels but never spoke of or to each other. MTV had the exclusive rights to the "Talk To Me" and "I Can't Wait" videos, VH1 only showed the older clips. The people on VH1 would talk about the "Rock A Little" or "Tango" albums, but would only play the older videos. "Sara", "Tusk", "Gypsy", "Hold Me", "Stop Draggin'", "Stand Back" and "If Anyone Falls" were all in VERY heavy rotation on VH1 in the mid-80's.

I became a serious Stevie fan in about 1985 and then I saw her for the first time in 1986(?) for RAL (at Jones Beach- I'm originally from Wantaugh, NY). I've been to every solo show of hers since- except for this upcoming one- *SOB*. ETA: I *do* remember what you're talking about with VH1 and MTV! :) :) :) |

My initial major musicial influences came from my older sister. I mated with them for life. (She went on to white trash country music.) First it was the Beatles and The Partridge Family! Then Fleetwood Mac. I became an eager music collector at a very early age. I recall being so proud showing my Sesame Street album to fellow pre-schoolers!
In 1977 I was 11 years old. My sister was a senior in high school. You could not escape Rumours -- it was a dominant force in culture at that moment. There were many parties at my house then. What passed for a sound system was my sister's little record player (a flip top box with a handle!) blasting at the top of the stairs. At one of these parties, I milled around watching a bunch of 18 years getting drunk (the drinking age was 18 in Massachusetts at that time). I can recall the very moment when I took notice of Stevie's voice echoing down the stairway with Gold Dust Woman. It gave me chills. Fleetwood Mac was on my radar now. My WT sister predictably soon knocked up and getting married, I inherited her albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, Future Games and Mystery To Me. As I absorbed those albums, the big surprise to me was to discover a huge rich history of a band of many incarnations. The obsession began and has never waned. I wonder, during the Rumours heyday, how many unsuspecting new fans bought pre 1975 Fleetwood Mac albums thinking they were getting the Rumours band. I bet those albums benefitted saleswise from the halo effect. |
I think the the year was around 1977 and i was 8 years old and i can remember watching the movie slap shot and there was this one scene where this van pulls up to the sidewalk and the song on the radio was rhiannon. At
the time i didn't know who sang it but i just remembered that voice and I asked my brother who was older than me to find that song for me. So a few weeks later i got the fleetwood mac white album for my birthday and thats when it started for me. |
I'm actually fairly new to the world of Stevie Nicks....I've known about Fleetwood Mac for years (from the limited selections they play on the radio every now and again) but didn't really tune in to Stevie herself until I started watching those specials on TV - VH1 Fanclub, Behind the Music - like that. Then "The Dance" and some of her videos (I LOVE "Gypsy" and "Stand Back"!!) started showing up on TV and I was hooked. I've only got three albums so far (the local music shops don't seem to carry a whole lot of variety beyond what passes for music among teeny-boppers these days) but I keep looking.
Stevie seems to be a wellspring of creativity. I pop in a CD and she sets my imagination free. I write fanfiction every now and again, just for fun, and some of my vignettes are centred around her lyrics. One of these days I might go hunting for sheet music...see if I can try some of her music on my harp... |
I know just who to blame... well - thank for my mac and stevie obsession. Christopher! (aka TheWILDheart) I think it was just last year actually. (OMG! just last yaer - that is WEIRD!) So I'd be 16.
He made a compilation of Mac's greatest hits - well - hits and some of his favourites... lol. The cd's still in the car actually. I think he made it as much for my mum as me  . We (mum, dad, me n chris) went to Alton Towers theme park as an "end of exams treat" lol. Had the cd on in the car on the journey. Well, I guess that was it for me. The rest as they say is history. I ripped the cd onto my compter and it wasn't long before I'd borrowed just about all of Chris's Mac and Stvie cds. I started my own collection just a few months later. Ah dear. And (I admit it) I'm still missing about 4 albums. I'm quite ashamed of myself! So there ya go. Moi's story. Love ya chris :xoxo: |

GRRRRRRRR!!! Biotch!! i think this maybe the ledge's new favourite phrase. I think like 80% of the people posting in this thread have said this.[/QUOTE] I was about to say something about that but you beat me too it. It definately is neat to hear everyone's story of how they became a fan. It's like, the day your life changed, know what I mean? I don't even know what music I was listening to before that 2003 Barnes and Noble day in Destin. How my life would be different if it weren't for Harry Potter. |
