chiliD 05-18-2007 05:09 PM

I haven't really been "sad" for quite a while...and I try not to dwell on sad times.

I'll take that as a compliment.

Actually, when I do hit a "sad" time, I DON'T listen to music, I MAKE music. Playing guitar is VERY cathartic.

i was kidding, i didn't mean it in a bad way ;)

and i missed the last bit of villavic's post - i don't listen to music that'll make me keep feeling bad, i listen to music that comforts me. thus, patty griffin. :woohoo:

DrummerDeanna 05-18-2007 05:42 PM

I'm incapable of listening to happy and uplifting music when I'm down...so I do listen to music that totally just "fits" my mood. Sarah McLachlan is good for that, Storms is good....I can't really think of any specifics...it totally depends on the degree of sad :p

Lots of Cowboy Junkies and Townes Van Zandt. Two of my favorite artists.

Both have really beautiful sad sad songs in their catalogs. In a way, when I listen to them though, they make me feel better. I'm not sure why, but they do.

ryan8472 05-18-2007 08:14 PM

The Mac - Angel
The Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Grateful Dead - Touch Of Grey
Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name
Pretenders - Night In My Veins

etc

I'm listening to that happy playlist right now actually!

amen.

any Tori Amos, but especially Little Earthquakes, and for some reason, Sandy Stewart's Cat Dancer album

rbs3676 05-19-2007 02:03 AM

When I am down, I listen to old Joni Mitchell and Morrissey. For some insane reason, they make me happy -- and I am over whatever it was that initially made me down.

I love the power of music...

I feel that way about Joni Mitchell. When I am down, I always play some Joni. Somehow, her songs put my pieces together again.

I love the healing power of music.

Especially Night Ride Home. That record is my everything

Josh2003 05-20-2007 12:44 AM

Rufus Wainwright is good for sad.

Some of his best for "sad": Dinner at Eight, Harvester of Hearts, Want, Vicious World, Waiting for a Dream.

And now the pathetic part: I actually have a "sad" playlist...I haven't listened to it in a while, but it includes:

Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
Jason Mraz - Absolutely Zero
Jewel - Foolish Games
Lifehouse - Everything
Dolly Parton - The Grass is Blue

And a few others.

I'm in a bummed mood, so maybe I'll listen to it tonight.

EveryHour 05-21-2007 12:42 AM

"Lilac Wine" or "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. Jesus.

elie 05-21-2007 07:54 AM

I agree on "Hallelujah". Usually I pick John Cale's version.

"Marianne", Tori Amos.
"Not the Red Baron", Tori Amos.
"Storms" FM
"Playboy Mommy" Tori Amos (that one always makes me cry)

Now if I want to feel better:

"Sara" (of course) FM
"Rear view mirror" Pearl Jam
"Mr. Zebra" , Tori Amos
"One", U2

I accept! Let's have happier songs at the wedding tho, k? :xoxo:

For sad songs, I also nominate the Chicks' Cold Day in July and Without You.

i am a HUGE believer in owning my sadness. when i am sad, i put on the saddest music i own, and just let my heart break off piece by piece. my best friend actually calls and threatens to come over and take my ipod away.

the best for helping to rip out your heart:

Goodbye - Patty Griffin: oh my lord. "today my heart is big and sore. it's trying to push right through my skin"

Top of the World - also Patty Griffin

Sanvean - Dead can Dance

Maybe Not - Cat Power

We All Lose One Another - Jason Collett

Factory - Martha Wainwright

Breathe Me - Sia
