Too: meaning also, as well, in addition to.

Two: can be as bad as one. It's the loneliest number since the number one.

To: a preposition used for expressing motion or direction toward a point, person, place, or thing approached and reached, as opposed to from.

-----------

They're: a contraction of they and are. Example:They're going to quit going to shows if Stevie keeps up with this setlist.

Their: a form of the possessive case of "they" used as an attributive adjective, before a noun: Maybe if she changed the set the fans would be a little more open to spending their money.

There: that particular place, or point. Bitch, don't even go there.

catinthedark 05-18-2007 10:26 AM

it's = it is. the contraction.

its - THIS is the possessive. NOT it's. the dog wagged ITS tail.

thankyouverymuch.

I love this thread, even though I am guilty of spelling errors all the time..so Carrie, thank you for not pointing out the fact that I spelled gynecologist wrong last night. :p

The Tower 05-18-2007 12:39 PM

It's "weird", not "wierd".

"Loose" and "looser" are the opposite of tight and tighter, not the spelling for "lose" and "loser". <--- I hate this one most of all.

Data is pronounced "day-tah", not "dah-tah".

And yes, I did...I'm ashamed.

And Tower, the data things is more of a preference thing...most dictionaries (at least the ones at my office and online) list both pronunciations as correct ones

I say dah-tah

you say day-tah

dah-tah, day-tah

I think it has to do with where you are located. Route-root, rowt etc

you should be ashamed.

and re: data, "dayta" is the preferred pronunciations according to most dictionaries, but the others "dat-a" and "dah-ta" are acceptable. much more egregious is when people use "data" as singular. it's plural.

lol what is the singular? I mean, I don't think I've ever used it that way. never really thought about it. just a question

Right. That's what I was trying to say

I more often than not say dah-tu. The Associated Press handbook doesn't list a preference. And yes, it does look like it may have something to do with location.

And I'm sorry Carrie, I'll spell gynecologist correctly from now on, I promise.

the singular is "datum."

oh, another plural word that people often use as singular is "criteria." the singular is "criterion." :woohoo:

It's all the guacamole. Clogs the pronunciation portals.

You know, for some reason I've always had a problem with toward vs. towards.

Also...can I just say...I HATE when people say "where is it at?" hate. "where are you at?" ARGHHHH!!!! No need for an "at"....at all :p

as far as i know, they're both correct, but american english speakers tend to say "toward" and british english speakers tend to say "towards."

Growing up, if we used "at" at the end of a sentence, my mother would respond "It's between the A and the T". We would get confused and look at her and she'd say, "There isnt a need for "at" -- just where is it?".
It worked.

On my first day in college, my English teacher went to one side of the room and on the chalkboard wrote "A" and then she walked to the other side of the room and on that chalkboard wrote "LOT". She then stood in the middle of the room and she said, "A lot. It's two words. Don't ever forget that or you will fail this course". I never forgot.

As it is, Im a horrible speller. Livia is CONSTANTLY on me about it. :wavey:

See? No one I know says toward...everyone says towards and it drives me a little batty...not nearly as bad as everything else...basically I don't know how I manage to even talk to people

I dated a guy once who said "suposubly" and "framiliar"...I dumped him really quick ;)

I don't think I've ever made any of the spelling/grammatical mistakes mentioned in this thread. Hah. :wavey:

my best friend's husband uses suposubly. and he's always going on and on about how much smarter he is than her. but he's a dick.

I also get might/may mixed up. :o actually, i still don't know. hhaha I guess "might" is "possibly" and "may" is giving permission?? but I mix them all the time.

SuzeQuze 05-18-2007 01:26 PM

"should of" instead of "should have" drives me nuts. And what's up with Stevie in CV saying "lip singing"? It's "lip synching"!

And by the way...I've sort of adopted that whole "moo point" thing - but only with friends/family who know what it means....

Oh me too. We pull out Friends quotes all the time.

"Aw, he's her lobster." or "It's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy, and it IS a big deal!" or whenever someone says something like "What in the name of hell?!" we automatically go "Maybe he found your flip flop?" or whenever something tastes gross "Yup, it's fat! I'm drinking fat!"

"Aah, she's one of us now."

"How you doin'?" Ofcourse.

"The cushions are the essence of the chair!" "So, I am taking the essence."

Okay, I'll stop.
