CaNaDa BoUnD!

Kris and I are going to drive around eastern Canada for 9 days. Any suggestions of attractions to see? Places to eat? Where to shop? We will be stopping in Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. Oh, and Niagra Falls as well.....We are wondering about hidden gem towns and off-the-beaten path places.

Thanks.

amber 03-19-2007 08:29 PM

Whoa, that is going to be awesome! Good job, Curtie!

And, no, I don't have suggestions. Just wanted to say how cool that is. :p

I read French really well......can't speak it that good, though. Plus, Kris is a French professor and Masters student in French.

JazmenFlowers 03-20-2007 08:30 AM

how lovely. I hope you guys have a lot of fun and bring back great stories and pictures.

skcin 03-20-2007 10:51 AM

Where, oh where, are the resident Canucks now when you actually need them? Theresa? Cat? Lisa?

gldstwmn 03-20-2007 11:41 AM

That sounds wonderful. Please tell us all about it when you get back.

how weird, I was just looking at this thread and was going to bump it cause no one helped you out.

Anyway, maybe what they say about Canadians is true...

Can't you guys just find all the really cool stuff you need online? Clearly, no one here will help. :p JK.

Canada is pretty big, maybe they don't live in the right places. :D

However, I've heard from 2 very different people that they have vacationed in Nova Scotia, and is not to be missed. Then I asked them why, cause it is cold and I hate that, and it seemed so random. They went on and on about the wondrous beauty and coolness, so then I visited a website about Nova Scotia, and it did look hella cool.
So. There. I tried to help. :xoxo:

goldustsongbird 03-20-2007 08:50 PM

Well, since you don't want to visit me... There's always Yonge Street in Toronto. ;) Everything is there, seriously. It's miles f*ckin' long.

Niagara Falls? I haven't been there in ages, but erm, the falls would be a good place to start. Check out the Minolta and Skylon Towers. The Skylon has a revolving dining room. http://www.skylon.com/
I can't remember any other places to eat, though, so just check out their tourist site. http://www.infoniagara.com/ Ooh, and you should go on the Maid of the Mist ferry (I think it's a ferry) ride, if you're not averse to that kinda thing. It's so fun. Some people don't like boating, though.

I can't think of anything out of the way, off the beaten path type places. If the Wax Museum and IMAX are still there in N.Falls, check that out. lol. I think they might've closed them, though. Oh, and buy their fudge at the Fudge Factory.

MoonChilde 03-20-2007 09:28 PM

Sorry I can;t help you out much..Like I said if you were coming to the East coast of Canada I could point you to some cool places..or if you were going to the West Coast..Vancouver and northern Bc..than I could help you out again..lol..I have lived on both coasts and only usually just pass through the those middle boring provinces..lol..jk....No worries you will find lots to do and see in Montreal and Toronto though.Younge Street would be a good start ..just be careful...
If you ever decide to come East or west..I;ll have a list for you..
Enjoy your trip..

i'm back! sorry! was away for work...

curtis, i'm so happy to hear you're coming to our little corner of the world! i was born and lived in montreal for three decades... and i've lived in toronto for five years now. i may have a few suggestions...

what do you like to do? what kind of food? bars? shopping? activities?

(and need i say, you better tell me what date you're in toronto. we have a little wedding to plan, my house husband to be...) :xoxo:

ryan8472 03-21-2007 12:57 AM

Maybe you should go over the Falls in a barrel. You'd be my hero for life.

Stew_Matthews 03-21-2007 05:56 AM

Curtis

I’ll try and help you with a few suggestions. I know Newfoundland best but that’s probably too far North for your trip.

For something tranquil, it’s pretty nice around 1000 islands. If you want a couple of days to chill out in a really beautiful place – its worth a visit. Some of the smaller hotels are really nice and would make for a very romantic break!

If you’re driving between Ottawa and Toronto then you could go via Algonquin (spelling may be wrong). It’s a national park and beautiful to drive through and has an art gallery in the middle of it as I remember.

In Montreal, the jazz clubs are an obvious choice. If you like jazz I can send you some specific suggestions. I saw Cassandra Wilson in Montreal, one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. I’ll never forget her version of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon.

In Ottawa and the local area there is loads of white water rafting. Terrifying but don’t miss it!

And finally Niagra. You have to go but parts of it are horribly commercialised. But if you get chance go to Niagra on the Lake – there are a number of wineries near there.

Anyway the Canadians may be able to suggest a few more things. I feel in the mood for some Joni Mitchell now………....

Stew

ps Quebec City is wonderful too.

.

Parts of it? Please, the only place more commercial is Vegas.

Maid of the Mist is cool (the boat takes you right to the foot of the falls) and the Cave of the Winds tour you can walk down wooden stairs to their base. You'll get very wet on either adventure, but it's tons of fun.

Dumb question, but do you guys accept our money and debit cards and such?

You should be able to withdraw Canadian dollars from your account using your debit card over there. This is supposedly the way to get the best exchange rate. Your bank may charge a fee for any purchases/withdrawals made in a foreign currency. It's like 1% or something though.

skcin 03-22-2007 02:51 PM

That's not a dumb question. How are you to know if you have to cash in all your real money for loonies & toonies?

The credit/debit route is easiest, IMO. If you'd rather do cash, I'd exchange US for Canadian right at the border, and whatever you don't use change back on your way home.

Hey all.

My trip is going wonderful! Quebec City is abosuletly gorgeous@!#!@# I loved it there. We are in Montreal right now....hate it....the city is gross....Hyperdemic needles all over the place! We've seen a few places here and there that were nice, but we are not impressed.

We also visited the world famous Ice Hotel...ya know...the one you see on The Discovery Channel! Absolutely breathtaking!#$#

Coming up: Ottawa, Toronto, and The Falls :)

Pics to come soon!

wow :( montreal is a big city. you are clearly in the wrong neighbourhoods. sorry to hear that. you're missing out on one of the most beautiful cities in north america.

Grainuaile 03-30-2007 08:23 PM

I live in the Falls [God help me!] and we have an absurd number of strip clubs and sex shops, if that's what you're interested in. ;) Stay away from the downtown area, it's pretty nasty and seedy. Lots of fun museums and stuff on Clifton Hill. Two of my favourite restaurants are Mama Mia's [if you like Italian], and the Flying Saucer. The FS is tacky as all get out, but the foods actually decent and it's cheap.
