Covers of Chris Songs
I thought it might be an interesting thread starter if we were able to compile a list of artists who have covered songs written by Christine McVie.
I'll give one: Stephanie Mills: "Oh Daddy" I'd love to see more... |
Eva Cassidy - Songbird
Chaka Khan - Everywhere Annie McLoone - Spare Me A Little Of Your Love Cyndi Lauper - You Make Loving Fun KC & The Sunshine Band - Don't Stop |
Tori Amos:Songbird
|
Willie Nelson-Songbird
Elton John-Don't Stop |
Leo Kottke - World Turning
Natalie Cole - Oh Daddy Rita Coolidge - Songbird And, all the songs of hers on Tusk were covered by Camper Van Beethoven (since they covered the entire album) |

Chaka? For reals? If you do not lie to me, you may have made my year.

I'd also love to hear the Annie McLoone version of "Spare Me", and Cyndi Lauper's "You Make Lovin' Fun," which has to be better than Jewel's version on that awful Rumors Tribute record. |
For what it's worth, I also remember some band from about five or six years ago doing "Everywhere." Heard it in a cafe in NYC. It had a kind of "electronica" feel to it. Don't know who it was...anyone?

Elton John's "Don't Stop" and the WORST offender: Duncan Sheik's "Songbird". Why they just didn't use Eva Cassidy's version just boggles my mind. The Cranberries' version of "Go Your Own Way", Matchbox 20's "Never Going Back Again" and the Goo Goo Dolls' "I Don't Want To Know" are the album's highlights for me. |

I usually don't care much for covers by my favorite artists, but I thought "Dreams" by that Irish band was pretty good. |

Even my nephew liked that one (although I think that did have something to do with Andrea Coor seemingly wearing little more than a handkerchief in the video!) Gail |

"Coors" is an American beer. |

I knew that! Gail |

I don't think they were actually aware of it until the album was nearly ready and by then it was too late. Mick has been quoted as saying Christine loves Eva Cassidy's version. Gail |

I guess I am the only one that loves D.S.'s Songbird. I think it's gorgeous.

There's a much better tribute album to the band, in general, called "Fleetwood Mac: Patron Saints of Pop," where all the band's songwriters (excepting Jeremy Spencer, Bill Burnette, David Walker, David Mason, Rick Vito, and Becka Bramlett) are represented. The majority of the songs are covered by energetic indie bands. Highly recommended. |

Anyone have other Chris covers to download? |

And, yes, I thought this was bonified 80s production. |

We can't forget the Camper Van Beethoven's Tusk versions of Christine's songs. Even more obscure - the other Fleetwood Mac (1997) tribute album "Patron Saints of Pop." It was all random covers of various songs by a bunch of unheard of alternative rockers. There was one song by Christine on it: "Never Make Me Cry," covered by Spiroon. Anyone ever heard of him, them, it?

Rosie Thomas covered Songbird on her last album.
I'll post it a bit later. My fave Chris covers are Willie Nelson's Songbird and Jewel's You Make Loving Fun. |
Status Quo covered Don't Stop on an album with that name, the first of 2 albums of covers they did in the 90s.

Didn't Christine once say (a long time ago) that Francis Rossi and Rick Parfit looked like a "couple of f*ckin ponces" Gail |

the interview was reasonably recent but the comment was made sometime in the sixties. Gail |

I agree that the lesbian comment in People Magazine was unecessary but it honestly did not occur to me that the producer from Love Will Show us How was supposed to be gay. I don't think that a couple of comments, the last one being more than 30 years ago, makes a case for Chris being homophobic. Gail |

By the way, that guy in the "Love Will Show Us How" video was Paul Bartel. He was gay & eventually died of AIDS. |

I think sometimes political correctness can go too far. We have local councils in England not wanting to have "Christmas lights" in case that offends muslims. It doesn't actually offend the muslim community at all but some one clearly thinks it would. It can be taken too far but on the whole I think things are better now. I can't speak for Christine obviously but I think the "ponces" comment was made as a reaction to their stage clothes which were a little effeminate when they are not effeminate men. So I would say she thought they were trying to look like soemthing they weren't. Just my opinion. Gail |

My band was about halfway through "Can't Get Enough" and it was obvious that we weren't going to END the song anytime soon, so I just started singing the chorus of "Don't Stop", we ended up doing two verses and two more choruses, THEN segued back into the Bad Co. song for the end. |
