Mika

Has anyone heard of this guy? I just heard his single "Grace Kelly" and basically fell in love. It's different from what I'm used to, quirky and I love the artwork that I've found on his website and his MySpace...

I know only about what I've read on these sites - anyone else heard of him/Like him?

Oh! I didn't see that....and yes, he's quite easy on the eyes, which absolutely doesn't hurt :p

Love his work:thumbsup:

danax6 03-07-2007 09:23 PM

In that picture he looks a little like Jim Morrison. I like a man with slighty longer, curly hair. Oh yeah.

goldustsongbird 03-07-2007 10:49 PM

I don't like that song.

Yep... I love the sing Grace Kelly! It's my ringtone!

TheWILDheart 03-08-2007 07:46 AM

He's been #1 in the UK singes chart for a few weeks now.

Livia 03-08-2007 12:35 PM

He's playing a lot during SXSW - including one of Rachel Fuller's special guests at her gig - along with Martha Wainwright, Pete Townsend, Sean Lennon and Willy Mason.

Yep, he's very cute! I'm not all that familiar w/ the rest of his stuff, besides Grace Kelly. I first heard about him from Perez Hilton.

I am soo there for the Rachel Fuller appearance -- what an incredible roster of "special guests"!!

I've only heard two singles off his new album so far, and I've loved both! It's different and not just another boy singer/songwriter cutout - meaning he's not another John Mayer, James Blunt, Daniel Powter type...he's got something new and interesting to offer and I think that's what appeals to me...

And he's hot.

I agree that he is somewhat hot, but I would hardly call him new or interesting. He is a carbon-copy of the scissor sisters in one guy

I've never heard Scissor Sister :o So he and his style is new to me...and I really like what I've heard so far - that may change when his album is released here and I get to hear the rest of it.

You've never heard anything by the Scissor Sisters??

No :o

I don't listen to the radio a lot - and though I've heard a lot about them I've still not heard any of their stuff...perhaps I'll check them out though!

You should! I love them. Check out their myspace page

I love the sisters too! Their cover of "Comfortably Numb" is awesome! And that chick singer's got a lotta Stevie-ness about her. :D

Well I like the snippets of songs they have on their MySpace! But they still sound nothing like Mika to me...they have more of a throw back sound...of course this is all judging from their MySpace, I definitely have to check out more!

I'll bet. That song sounds pretty generic to me. The way everyone talks about it, I expected it to be really something.

How is it generic?

I mean everyone has different tastes but this song really caught my ear (extremely rare these days) and basically he rocks.

I haven't heard any of Mika's other tracks. I do love Grace Kelly though! Just find it really catchy!

It just... IS. It doesn't grab my attention. To me, he just sounds like every other guy with a guitar.

Wow. And to me he doesn't, which is what appeals. If I have to sit through another Jack Johnson or John Mayer I'd go crazy - he seems different to me.

But to each their own...:D

Do you like Gnarls Barkley? That's who he made me think of. lol. I don't like Jack Johnsor or Mayer, either.

Good God. I HATE...nay LOATHE and Abhor (we know what you are, Blanche, it's nice to hear you say it....abhor a slut...same difference) Gnarls Bakley.

So yeah, I didn't get that connection at all...

So then have you heard the whole album or are you basing this on just the Grace Kelly song? I'm curious - though either way I'll probably still buy the album when it comes out here.

What did you think of the Decemberists by the way?

You never cease to crack me up.

I don't know what the big deal with Mika is, honestly. I like him, but he blends in with the rest of the "Guy and his guitar" acts out there.

Why thank you. :p

Wow....hmm...well maybe if I listened to the radio more I'd realize he's nothing different or special..but for someone as new music-ignorant as myself I just took to him right away.

It's cool, I use the same defense when people get on me about liking Jason Mraz. I know there's a bunch of guys out there that are doing the same thing, but there's something about him. I can't explain it, but I love it. So go on with your Mika love. We won't judge you. To your face.

And I also like Jason Mraz :o

And Sharon...so you think the album is a joke as well? Why?

The album "Life in Cartoon Motion" is our album of the week this week, so I have had to play it about 3 times a day, so I have heard it enough times to give a fair review :p

I love nthe Decemberists. I ordered the album in for the store based on the tracks you sent me

Interesting. So did you dislike it upon first hearing, or have you just grown very sick of it? Or do you basically just think it and he sucks?

I'm glad you liked the Decemberists! If you like Crane Wife I highly recomend picking up Picaresque...it's their previous album and I love it. It's great...now there's a band that is truly different

I will check it out - thanks :)

Ah...well perhaps me and your mom would get along :p I'm still curious based upon what I've heard - and I love the artwork on his site, which I'm asuming is also on the album?

foxyluva 03-08-2007 07:46 PM

The artwork is great - I admit that much :p

Peestie 03-08-2007 08:13 PM

The only chart album by a new artist I've bought in ages. It's such a catchy album from start to finish. Love it. Very cheery. Grace Kelly grabbed me when I heard. It's definitely ear catching. I knew the first time that I heard it that it would be a love or hate song though. I thought I'd get sick of it eventually but I haven't yet. Also, every song on the album could be the best IMO, except perhaps Billy Brown which is equally good and catchy but perhaps a bit to silly/flipant lyrically for me to take totally seriously.

Also, the "every guy and his guitar thing"... I don't hear that at all. For a starters, he's a pianist. Every song I listen to on the album just scream "not written by a guitar player, written by a pianist". There's something about the structure of the songs that says that to me. Also, there's really not all that much guitar on the album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC9UzFhNlbA

So, we've had him here for quite a while, is he just getting over to the US now?

ECK! I dislike him on an unhealthy level. That song is atrocious. Mika needs too take a long way off a short pier.
