Has Lindsey disowned "Out of the Cradle"?
Kind of a pointless post, but while I waiting to have my ice cream served at Friendly's tonight, I heard Soul Drifter over the muzak system. I couldn't believe it; in fact, I had such a hard time believing it I ran to the bathroom where it's much quieter, just to be sure I hadn't gone insane! It was the first time I'd ever heard a Lindsey song besides GYOW played in a restaurant, grocery store, hospital waiting room, etc.
So why won't he play anything from OOTC on his solo tour? |
Well he is doing Turn It On...
But generally this tour is quiet and acoustic, and generally Out of the Cradle is loud and electric. Plus it's his most commercial album and his new album and tour are not exactly about being commercial. I think the songs just don't fit as well. |

Inherently his weakest solo album, if not only due to the fact that several of the songs are blatant re-writes of his contributions to Tango (Chili, you were spot on in this analysis), its right up there with Go Insane in terms of its datedness (far surpassing GI in the realm of cheese/obnoxiousness, with the vocal affectations and the like). That's not to say there aren't one or two tracks that stand up in his overall canon- or even a few others that would be decent if they weren't drenched in a heavily dated (even for 1992) Fairlight treatment. It's just that, in comparison, consensus worst UTS track "Flying Down Juniper" ranks better than 90% of OOTC. I'll never, for the life of me, understand why OOTC is considered such a great album... especially compared to the output Lindsey released before and, well, even after it. |
Flying Down Juniper, a song which Lindsey would probably admit himself was rather weak, is better than 90% of OOTC? Now that is a good laugh.
|
I've certainly never understood the overwhelming love for Out of the Cradle (except for the fact that it's his most Mac-like, and therefore commercial, album) but I would take almost every song on it over Flying Down Juniper.
|
Yes, he has disowned it. Because of the crappy drum sound.

If he had used a fleshmade drummer on those OOTC tracks, the whole sheen of that album would have been different and it would have stood the test of time, imo. Go Insane doesn't sound that dated anymore to my ears. It did in the nineties, but not anymore... Weird huh?

I'm not sure why a "dated" sound to the album would prevent Lindsey from playing any of those tunes. He had no qualms about reworking "Big Love" and "Go Insane" to suit how his tastes had changed.
I'm sure he could, if he wanted to, very easily play songs like "Don't Look Down," "Wrong," "Countdown," "Soul Drifter," "All My Sorrows" and "Street Of Dreams." |

But in the sparse rythmtracks on UTS, I don't mind the use of electronics. |
I would love to hear him do "All My Sorrows" and "Street of Dreams"

I think "Street Of Dreams" would be a great addition to Lindsey's set, especially with "This Nearly Was Mine" as the intro, like he did in 1993. OOTC is a fine album. The biggest weakness is the lack of a real drummer. Had the album had Mick and John, I doubt there would be much debate on how good the album was. But, in the Grunge era, the album really was too sophisticated. He waited too long to release it.

Out of the Cradle
I think that the reason he's not doing OOTC tracks is because the concept isn't valid anymore. OOTC was all about leaving Fleetwood Mac and putting all of the crap associated with it behind him. Songs like "Countdown" or "Don't Look Down" or even "Surrender the Rain" aren't really relevant anymore because he came back to Fleetwood Mac. I suppose he could do something like "All My Sorrows" or "Turn it On", but he doesn't have enough musicians on this current tour to do them justice. There are SO many layered guitars on the album that even if he had all three of his accompanying musicians playing guitars on the tour, they really couldn't do most of the songs. He has the instrumental tracks, but the four acoustic tunes he does at the beginning of the set are better known and are surefire crowd pleasers.

I have a feeling that he is going to add maybe 1-2 more OOTC tunes to his set for the next leg. I also have an inkling that Shut us Down and Try for the Sun are gunna get in there. Or at least I hope so. |

This Nearly Was Mine/Street of Dreams would be a great addition. The versions I've heard from the OOTC tour were devastating. So emotional. I also think that Countdown done like he did acoustically on his own would work well. Not sure it would fit as well if it was performed with the full band though.
|
I always found it weird that he didn't perform Countdown much on the OOTC tour because it sounded great on Letterman that time.
But he should definitely add Street Of Dreams to this tour, it's one of my faves and fits with the acoustic feel he's currently going for. |

Countdown too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-UL_FygH08 I just LOVE when he goes totally nuts. Coke or no coke. |
Countdown live? Only in my dreams...that would be an incredible addition. His badass electric version or acoustic version. That is such a great song! I'm easy. :D
