Buckingham Nicks Early Sound City Sessions released?

Four more titles, unearthed from Los Angeles' Sound City Entertainment, will be released by Sonic Past Music in the upcoming months. March 13 will be the launch date for J.P. Morgan: The Early Sound City Sessions and April 9 the release date of Rick Springfield: The Early Sound City Sessions and Les Emerson: The Early Sound City Sessions. An unexpected treasure, S&L (Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham): The Early Sound City Sessions will be released in May.

J.P. Morgan's CD was produced by David Foster, with Bill Champlin and a host of other great session players of the '70s. Rick Springfield's Sound City recording is with Rick's band prior to the involvement of Keith Olsen's studio musicians. Les Emerson's CD (The Five Man Electrical Band) is entirely composed of previously unreleased material; and the early Sound City sessions of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks produced by Keith Olsen, showcase the duo as they were on the cusp of joining Fleetwood Mac.

Even better if all but two tracks really are unreleased.

Landslide and Rhiannon would probably be the released tracks. I wonder which other ones we'll get and whether they were part of the Coffee Plant demos or not. So, for us brand new or not?

Or...maybe a crystal clear version of Without You? Oh, be still my heart.

trackaghost 02-16-2007 09:24 AM

Wow, great news. Maybe this will give them the push to finally release the Buckingham Nicks album on CD too.

danax6,

Love your sig :)

JazmenFlowers 02-16-2007 09:38 AM

 awesome. but wouldn't Stevie and/or Liddy have to ok a release like this? I'm just curious why they'd ok this, but not the BN album.

thanks for the info.

Maybe they figured 'hey, this will take off some of the pressure... this should tide them over for a while'.

estranged4life 02-16-2007 09:59 AM

I wonder if...

this release could be the tracks that are commonly referred to as "The Coffee Plant Demos" & "Buckingham/Nicks 2"?

That's what I was thinking... And I still think a two disc version of the Buckingham Nicks cd (the original being remastered) with a bonus disc of earlier stuff or outtakes would have been the way to go when ever they got around to releasing it. But yeah, this definately takes off some of the pressure - and some of the work involved in finding a label and a deal to release some stuff...

Does this stuff end up in retail stores - or is this strictly sold online though their site?

ELIUD 02-16-2007 10:14 AM

I'd love it if Cathouse Blues was on that disc. I want the world to hear that song.

Well, this is supposed to be stuff that is actually recorded AT Sound City, and the Coffee Plant demos were recorded at...the coffee plant. ;) But, as I said earlier, maybe they re-recorded some demos from that 'compilation' at Sound City (Without You, God willing...) or maybe this is brand new stuff even WE have never heard before.

That's what I'm wondering. Very cool, though.

danax6 02-16-2007 10:59 AM

It's quite possible this song will be on it.

http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/bn/un...lesintime.html

They did it live at those shows in the South. Maybe they intended to put it on BN2?

So I'm guessing either A) the above information above is incorrect, B) Stevie is forgetful, or C) the there was another set of Coffee Plant recordings from after the Buckingham Nicks record flopped?

That excerpt makes it sound like the Coffee Plant stuff was recorded prior to the inspiration for "Garbo." Is it possible the Coffee Plant material wasn't actually recorded in Morris Buckingham's coffee plant?

From the Lindsey biography at The Penguin, which doesn't mention the Coffee Plant thing:

These demos would probably be along the lines of what the Sonic Past information describes. But it's all a bunch of "he said"/"she said."

If only David were around, he might have a frighteningly accurate timeline to go by!

Fritz disbanded in 1970 and not long after Lindsey and Stevie left for LA. They were barely there when they had to head back again because Lindsey caught mono, which wouldn't do them any good in expensive LA. Back in the Bay Area, where Lindsey was slowly recuperating (which took a long time) they used the coffee plant during the night to record the demos. So, most of 1971. They headed back late '71, early '72.

I've always believed that Stevie wrote After the Glitter Fades after that cover shoot, and she's just mixing up Garbo with ATGF. I think Garbo was written when they were first in LA for that short time and she discovered what a whole different world it was. (and they had been in LA with Fritz for a short while also...staying at the Tropicana  )

catinthedark 02-16-2007 10:58 PM

this is seriously the most excited i've been about a stevie and/or lindsey release in years.

(sorry - i was excited about UTS, but not THIS excited!)

can you imagine if this has BN recordings even WE have never heard??

Exactly. I am speechless and lying on the floor reaching up to type this from when I fell off my chair (no, not really, but my jaw dropped) and still am in shock this is really happening. Somebody pinch me. :]

markolas 02-17-2007 10:36 AM

This just doesn't make any sense. I mean, Buckingham Nicks is already an obscure album that I'm guessing most people don't even know was ever made. Why would they release something even more obscure before they put out the actual Buckingham Nicks album?

Musicman408 02-17-2007 11:54 AM

This would be pretty cool.....:]

Keith Olsen might own these masters while S&L own Buckingham Nicks.

I love that song! Especially the devil's chambermaid line. I wonder what kind of sexy role playing was involved in Lindsey (probably) referring to Ms. Stepahnie as the devil's chamber maid?

Johnny Stew 02-17-2007 07:08 PM

This is very exciting news!

Several years ago, there was a similar release for Madonna. Her early collaborator, Stephen Bray, owned the rights to the recordings and released an "unauthorized" compilation.

There have also been similar releases of David Bowie's early Deram recordings.

yeah, I remember when a guy that produced some of Christina Aguilera's early demos put an album out. she allowed him to release it with a disclaimer written by her on the liner notes stating they were very raw demos.

to do some comparing to some stuff I have by B&N (So I am game to purchase this release), to see if indeed it has been remastered and upgraded.

ontheEdgeof17 02-18-2007 12:28 AM

Exciting news. I can't wait to hear this release. :wavey:

PenguinHead 02-18-2007 02:01 AM

Exciting news! My guess is that there is a possibility that Stevie and Lindsey may not even have the rights to some of their early records sans the Buckingham Nicks album. If they were smart about it, like someone else suggested, any rare stuff should have been issued as a bonus disc to the relatively short B/N album.

Thanks - that's what I was thinking, after remembering the stories about the "hands off Stevie" policy the men of Fritz had.

I'm fairly sure it was 1970. Stevie and Lindsey have always said that they didn't get together until AFTER they got to LA, but 1970 was the first time they were in LA. With Fritz, meeting with Keith Olsen, where they got to hear that they should continue as a duo without the rest of the band. And that's when they stayed at the Tropicana.
