Sxsw 2007

http://2007.sxsw.com/music/festival/

That's the first official list of bands. As I posted in the other thread, most of the big acts are TBA. So far, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Booker T & the MGs, Johnette Napolitano (according to her myspace page, she is playing in a VERY small, intimate, hotel cocktail lounge), and many other cool acts are confirmed. Morrissey is rumoured to return, and there's another rumour of a Nirvana reunion w/ Ben Kweller on lead vocals.

Ledgies around the world - please post your recommendations! Y'all haven't let me down yet! Last year, I became a huge Wolfmother fan, thanks to Gerald. :xoxo:

One more favor - if you say a band is "good," please mention what type of music it is or who they sound like or why you think they're good. If it's techno, ecstasy music, twangy country, or something else I know I won't like, then I won't waste my time googling for them. In the near future, the SXSW site will have MP3s loaded and a sort function to list bands by genre and city & state/country, so that will help.

Thanks!!

estranged4life 02-14-2007 01:26 PM

I know of a few on the list....

I didnt list the obvious Austin based acts that you may know Livia:

Jello Biafra-(Former singer of the Dead Kennedys) Hardcore punk & spoken word

Broken Teeth (Featuring Jason McMasters of Dangerous Toys)-Rock

Tracy Byrd-Country musician who puts on an entertaining show, I would recommend him if you're a country fan.

Mastadon - Metal band, alright for their type of metal (Not thrash/death/black metal)

Meat Puppets-Alternative rock (I remember these guys from when they had 2 former members of San Antonio's metal band Pariah, Kyle Ellison & Shandan Sahm, in their group for a time)

Ian Moore-Great guitarist from Seattle - Rock

Charlie Robison-Country (Married to one of the Dixie Chicks)

Duncan Sheik-Rock/Alternative rock

Stardeath and White Dwarfs-Alternative Rock (From OKC, friends of Flaming Lips)

Tia Carrera (Didnt know she is based in Austin  )

The Tragically Hip - Canadian rock legends

Livia 02-14-2007 02:05 PM

Jello Biafra-(Former singer of the Dead Kennedys) Hardcore punk & spoken word - He's here every year and I never see him due to a scheduling conflict...I may try harder this time...

Broken Teeth (Featuring Jason McMasters of Dangerous Toys)-Rock Rule #1 during SXSW and only because I live here - never see anyone local. His AC/DC cover band, Big Balls, is also playing this year, which I thought was kinda odd.

Tracy Byrd-Country musician who puts on an entertaining show, I would recommend him if you're a country fan. Not really...

Mastadon - Metal band, alright for their type of metal (Not thrash/death/black metal) I'll google and check 'em out

Meat Puppets-Alternative rock (I remember these guys from when they had 2 former members of San Antonio's metal band Pariah, Kyle Ellison & Shandan Sahm, in their group for a time) The original members just did a surprise reunion show, I'm not sure what the sxsw lineup will be

Ian Moore-Great guitarist from Seattle - Rock formerly from Austin 'til he met a chick from Seattle and got married. :p He is a great guitar player, and nice eye candy too. But, I consider him local....next!

Charlie Robison-Country (Married to one of the Dixie Chicks) Not really into his music...

Duncan Sheik-Rock/Alternative rock After the butchering he did of Songbird on the FM tribute album, I don't think I can sit through a set...

Stardeath and White Dwarfs-Alternative Rock (From OKC, friends of Flaming Lips) They sound interesting....

Tia Carrera (Didnt know she is based in Austin  ) They won best metal band at the Austin Music Awards a couple years ago, they're alright

The Tragically Hip - Canadian rock legends[/QUOTE] They were just here for ACL and I skipped them...meh

Black Tie Revue (Pittsburgh PA)
- A local act over here. They're kind of punky, more new wave, but a fun band altogether. I saw them once a few years ago, and their set was really solid.

The Blue Van (Copenhagen DENMARK)
- One of my favorites! They opened for The Pretenders when I saw them last year in Atlantic City. They're a bit of a 60s garage throwback, and they put on a fabulous show. Some of their influences - The Kinks, The Sonics, The Small Faces, etc. Their songs are incredibly catchy, and they're completely adorable. I highly reccomend them.

The Breakup Society (Phoenix AZ)
- Formerly Pittsburgh-based powerpop band, fronted by Ed Masley, a great rock writer. They're on the label I work for, Get Hip Recordings. Unfortunately, I have never seen them in concert, but everyone I know who has seen them said that they're phenomenal. For a while, I could not stop playing their album, "James At 35." I mean, they have songs with names such as "Robin Zander" and "The New Ronnie Spector." Name-dropping like that is always good. Much love for The Breakup Society.

The Cynics (Pittsburgh PA)
- The greatest band to ever come out of the Steel City. Known as the "garage rock kingpins." Their influences are vast, but their sound, to me, is reminiscent of The Sonics, early Petty, Dylan, Blue Cheer, the Stones, loads of 60s garage and folk. Their lead guitarist, Gregg, is the owner of the label I work for, so he's basically my boss, which is weird. But I'm not just saying that, they put on a fabulous show, and their albums are always consistent. Michael, their lead singer, is an absolute sweetheart, and a great performer - he reminds me a bit of Iggy Pop onstage. If you check 'em out, tell Gregg or Michael that Kate Hate sent ya!

Gore Gore Girls (Detroit MI)
- Think, The Ronettes wielding Gretsch guitars. The Gore Gore Girls are another one of my absolute favorite bands. They've got the badass Detroit rock 'n' roll attitude down pat, and their ability to craft a perfect pop song could make even Phil Spector jealous. The Gore Gore Girls kick ass.

Grand Buffet (Pittsburgh PA)
- Basically the coolest hiphop duo ever. Songs like "Benjamin Franklin Music" and "Oh My God You're Weird" are hilarious, and they're also very structured. They're awesome.

IV Thieves (Nottingham UK)
- Another band I've seen opening for The Pretenders. I can't really describe their sound, but they have traces of The Beatles and Oasis in them. Noel Gallagher even commented that they're one of the greatest bands in the UK. I got to hang out with them a few times, and they're very sweet. And they're also adorable.

Lily Allen (Hammersmith UK)
- Because she's Lily Allen! Her tunes are reminiscent of old ska and dancehall music, and just catchy as all hell. Lily is the ****!

The Paybacks (Detroit MI)
- More straight-up Detroit rock 'n' roll. They're very consistent with their material, and I've never heard a dud on any of their three albums. A garage rock and powerpop hybrid, their sound is kind of like Cheap Trick, only much ballsier. Another favorite band of mine.

Sloan (Toronto ON)
- Fun, Beatle-esque punchy rock 'n' roll. "Chester The Mollester" may be one of the greatest songs ever.

Tilly and The Wall (Omaha NE)
- TILLY! I can't even really describe their sound, but they're loads of fun, and their records are great. And they tapdance!

Mary Weiss (New York NY)
- Former lead singer of The Shangri-Las. She has a great voice, and her songs are great. I'm seeing her next month in Cleveland, and I cannot wait.

That's all I can think of. I want to go to SXSW so badly.. maybe next year, though. Have fun!

estranged4life 02-14-2007 02:52 PM

OKC has mentioned the possibilty of doing something similar to SXSW in future to highlight the expansive alternative rock hotbed of 'the City' that has grown exponentially since the explosion of the Flaming Lips.

And people think Oklahoma is just a country hotbed.

rbs3676 02-14-2007 03:09 PM

Since the definitive list of acts and their specific showcase times haven't been written in stone, it's hard to say who I will wind up seeing. However, the musicians that I MUST see are:

Johnette Napolitano (she's the real deal)
Amy Winehouse (her song "Rehab" is my favorite at the moment)
The Watson Twins (absolutely gorgeous - they will be awesome)
The Fratelli's (awesome band and they look like a lot of fun!)
The Good, The Bad & The Queen (Paul Simonon - 'nuff said)
Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton (Broken Social Scene side act)
Lily Allen (love the CD and I think she'll be fun to see)
Midlake (a lot of people compare them to the Mac and I can totally see why)
Paolo Nutini (YUMMY!)
The Pipettes (new girl group with a big buzz behind them)
Charlie Sexton (although he's a local, I adore him)
Spoon (love that "The Book I Write" song)\
Viva Voice (I'm excited about this!!)
The Walkmen (Like a couple of their songs but LOVE their horn arrangements)

There will certainly be more!!

You're welcome! I'm totally jealous that you get to see them and I don't :P It should be a great show, though.

I can't believe The Stooges are playing SXSW. I need to get my ass out there, or to one of their shows, at least. Sigh.

ryan8472 02-14-2007 04:50 PM

I would love to go to SXSW this year, soooo many good bands performing. I was intrigued by some of the band names I've never heard of before though, namely Psychadelic Horse****.

Lesbians on Ecstasy was a favorite of mind - and Holy **** and Holy F*ck being listed one after the other.

Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris and Pete Townshend are gonna be guest speakers. I know RLJ is performing too (although I can't stand her new song that I keep hearing on the radio, it's on right now - same song she did on Letterman the other night, and she looks like crap). Anyway, I'd love to see Emmylou or Pete perform somewhere.

Edit: Just noticed that Emmylou IS performing during her panel session - which means it will be jam-packed. Unless they hold it in the largest room at the convention center.

I missed these 2 earlier.

Les Claypool is one helluva quirky bassist (See his work with Primus), but a damn good one with an original style.

I love him. Not only his bass-style, but certainly also his "singing"-style  and overall musical approach. A real innovator.

Wow, that is a weird rumour. I really hope it doesn't happen. It just seems wrong.

Anyway, I don't think there's much for me to recommend, I obviously got here way too late, but I will mention a couple anyway:

Afterhours - great Italian band, Smoky, swaggery, sexy rawk

Martina Topley Bird - she used to sing with Tricky, but she's even cooler solo

Andrew Bird - I love him! Great voice and amazingly talented whistler and violinist (not many pop stars can say that these days). I'm going to see him in March myself. I can post some MP3s if you're interested. His next album is going to break him I think, it's soooo good.

The Black Angels - cool, dark bluesy, gloomy rock and roll. They are touring at the moment with The Black Keys. I'm seriously tempted.

BORIS - Melvins-inspired Japanese rock. Their last album Pink was in a lot of year-end polls

The Broken West - I've been listening to their debut album I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On a lot lately. Just infectious power pop, with definite Big Star and Kinks influences

Vashti Bunyan - Vashti is an English folk singer who recorded one album back in the early 70s which didn't do much and she just retired from the music business. Years on the likes of Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom started singing her praises and she finally recorded a follow-up. She's also worked quite recently with Animal Collective. A real treat to see her I think.

Cracker!!

Daniel Johnston - see the documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston, which is amazing, and you will want to catch this guy.

Willy Mason - just a great acoustic singer-songwriter. Compared to Dylan, but then isn't every dude with an acoustic guitar. Def worth checking out. Good sense of humour and cool tunes.

Midlake - I saw them three times last year. Yes they are that good. And they have cool, weird films they play as a back-drop, interesting vintage equipment and beards. Oh yes.

Grant Lee Phillips - I've never seen him solo, but with his band Grant Lee Buffalo he was amazing live, I'm sure his solo show will be just as good.

Fionn Regan - fantastic Irish singer-songwriter, with cool funny memorable songs and lots of charisma

Gruff Rhys - the singer from the Super Furry Animals. I saw his solo show last night Livia, and it is so much fun, don't miss!

Sahara Hotnights - all-girl punk rock from Sweden, what could be better?

Sloan - perfect power pop. They lost it for a while but I hear their new album is great.

That's more than a couple but what the hell...

shackin'up 02-14-2007 07:39 PM

okay, here's some more info

Alamo racetrack :dutch lowfi band: here they’re fooling around in a dressingroom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek4osa4LlVI

Beasts of Bourbon raw hard ROCK ‘n’ROLL! From down under. Their name says it all.

Garland Jeffreys Hail Hail Rock’n’Roll and Matador were big hits. He’s just a classic songwriter that I should check out. Just to be sure about a highquality performance.

JOHN WATTS!!!! Former singer of Fischer-Z. Still active. A great songwriter and special singer. Last year he was playing The day Johnny Cash passed away in a street in Austin!!! Look!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT8I3uJ0bl0

22 pistepirkko-----Fins. Very original punkpoppy experiments. A great band.
The Tragically Hip----NEVER SKIP THE MTFCKING HIP!

You're not too late at all - it's still a month away, but it takes that long to plan it all out. Thank you for these suggestions - you're the 2nd person who has mentioned Willy Mason to me...I've got some googling to do....

Daniel Johnston - I haven't seen the documentary on him yet...did it show how the die-hard Austinites fought to keep his weird frog mural on the wall of a record store after it got turned into a sandwich shop? I used to live 3 blocks from it when it was still a record store. Records, not CDs. And yes, the mural is still there.

shackin'up 02-16-2007 04:26 AM

I don't know if you checked out the other links I posted, but this is a vid from 22 Pistepirkko. They do things in quite a broad range, so this is not archetypical for them. They can pop, noise, punk and rock and everything in between. Very sympathetic and good band. Checkem out Livia, they're very inspiring.

Certainly not his best song, but it gives you an image of his humour and sensibility for real life. This guy plays regularly with electric guitar over a preprogrammed synth. He pours out great melodies, rawedged but beautiful melancholic poprock with a wink. I love it.

They show the mural but not the fight to keep it.
I have to say, I'm really glad it's still there!

Billo 02-16-2007 10:08 AM

SXSW is always a nutty good time around here. Last year was my best yet(Met Ray Davies, Bobby Bare, etc.), and I didn't even buy a wristband. For me, that seems the way to go - select your few "must sees" and don't kill yourself running around trying to catch everything under the sun. (I've done that) The Continental Club I hear will have something special on Saturday Night (read old school deliciousness) but things are still being firmed up.

I will probably be playing a few shows at Ego's and Freddie's Place but will surely be out and about. We should try and hook up Central Texas Ledgies n visitors.

From the descriptions posted, the Gore Gore Girls have intrigued me most so far. And there's the free shows at Auditorium Shores that are often pretty bad ass (Toots and the Maytals, Gourds, Allen Toussaint, etc.) - I hear Public Enemy might do one - I'm not a fan but an interesting choice.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Townsend do something small and acoustic. But those presentations where they speak (Emmylou, PT, etc) are usually impossible to get in unless you have the $600 industry badge, and even then it's first come basis.

I need to peruse that list more and keep checking back here...

Livia 02-18-2007 02:02 AM

Ozomatli is playing one of the free shows, hope they don't get arrested this time! I believe Public Enemy is a go as well.

The schedule is up now -

http://2007.sxsw.com/music/showcases...007-03-14.html

I'm already going bonkers - The Gore Gore Girls are playing at the same time as Iggy Pop & the Stooges. But, they are also playing a day party at Yard Dog on Sat.

Midlake is also playing the same time as Iggy. But, they're rolling thru Austin on their tour next Friday and at the SPIN party on Thursday at Yard Dog.

Read the bio for Steaming Wolf Penis - hilarious!

http://2007.sxsw.com/music/showcases/band/33176.html

rbs3676 02-18-2007 05:30 AM

I'm going crazy with the schedule, as well.

As much as I would love to see Iggy Pop again, to see the Gore Gore Girls at the Continental Club is almost too good to pass up.

The Watson Twins are playing @ a Presbyterian Church!! How friggin' cool is THAT??!??

The more I hear about Razorlight I like...And the Bravery as well.

Hows this for a one/two punch: Amy Winehouse at midnight on Thursday and then an hour later, a few doors down, you've got the Fratellis playing!! Hell yeah!

Of course, nothing beats seeing Johnette Napolitano on Saturday night in a small bar on the 18th floor of the downtown Hilton. Heaven!!

The madness has begun...

I really love the band Oakley Hall, playing at Antone's!
Here are some links, and a quote from their webpage:
Quote:

In other news, we get a double shot of UNCUT mag’s love this month. First they named Second Guessing one of the best albums of the year in the November issue and then they included “Hiway” on a CD of new American psych in the December issue. And we thank them for their yank love. We noticed that Lindsey Buckingham is on their list too, so we’d like to take this opportunity to ask him outright: Lindsey, will you produce our next record? We love you. We love “Holiday Road”, “Go Insane”, Buckingham-Nicks, and Tusk. “Hold Me” is in heavy rotation on tour. We love it all. We have very little to offer in terms of money, but ever hear of indie cred? Doesn’t pay the bills, but it would add some color to the ol’ resume. Think on it and please contact us at

Livia 02-18-2007 07:38 AM

^^That's funny - I noticed them earlier today and when I saw their pic, I thought, "Oh, 2 chicks in the band, I'll bet they never get compared to FM."

Sahara Hotnights and The Blue Van are playing in the same time slot, but I am intrigued as to who the "special guests" will be in that 1 AM time slot at Antone's.

Livia 03-08-2007 02:32 PM

A week away and my head is spinning from the scheduling and re-scheduling. But I've finally whittled it down, more or less. Lots of these bands are playing daytime parties, which helps a lot w/ all the nighttime conflicts:

The Pipettes
Mohair
Lily Allen
Rachel Fuller and guests (Mika, Martha Wainwright, Willy Mason, Sean Lennon and Pete Townsend)
Razorlight
The Gore Gore Girls
The Bravery
Sahara Hotnights
The Blue Van
Isaac Hayes/Stax 50 Venue (Helloooo, children!)
The Besnard Lakes
Funky Nashville
The Hedrons
Land of Talk
Amy Winehouse
The Oohlas
The Nightwatchman (aka, Tom Morello)
The Fratellis
The Vacancies w/ Joan Jett
The Breakup Society
Sloan
The Silos
The Good, The Bad and The Queen
Charles Wright and the 103
Paolo Nutini (I'm also going to try and snag tix for his ACL taping)
Johnette Napolitano
Iggy Pop & The Stooges
Perry Farrell's Satellite Party

Whew! And I've still left room for some wandering time for whatever, like bands from Japan - they're always fun. And really, the further away from Texas they are, the more I want to see them. Nordic night last year was SO much fun!

Thanks everyone, for your great suggestions!

one more suggestion (even though you pretty much have a busy schedule) march 15th at noon at the apple street bar -- a band called metro station is playing -- they're about to blow up and are pretty awesome. they have a song called kelsey (which you can listen to HERE) that's really pretty amazing -- a combination of electronica pop and rock. i bought their ep and it's solid

i wonder if amy will be coked out of her mind -- she's got a pretty heated fued with lily allen going on right now. both will be in austin so i'm wondering if the **** will go down.

Amy Winehouse is my absolute FAVORITE artist right now. Her upcoming CD is incredible...I listen to it a couple of times a day and I am REALLY excited about seeing her. She's playing a couple of times during SXSW. Can't wait!

Okay, is she being serious? Does she mean to be unintelligible and sing about half a count behind the beat and just this side of flat ? Never saw or heard anything of her before. Seems like a train wreck. That is, unless she means to be a train wreck for comedy's sake.

she's dead serious. i have no idea what she drank/snorted before she went onstage but charlotte has her hand on the small of amy's back for a bit like amy might up and topple over. she's apparently a total train wreck -- but when she's not all drugged up, bitch can sing. she has a song called rehab on the new album -- "they tried to make me go to rehab i said no no no" she should have said yes, yes, yes.
