Dream Job

I'm sure there has been a thread about this at some point in time but I did a search and didn't see anything. If I missed it just tell me this is a stupid thread and carry on. (I did see the thread about current occupations). This one is kind of a three-parter. Do you like your current job? If not, what would you have done instead, realistically? If you could do ANYTHING, what would it be (realistic or not)?

My current job is ok (attorney). Used to hate the particular field I was in but changed firms a few years ago so it is ok now. However, if I had it to do all over again, I think I would have been a veterinarian.

On the unrealistic side (since I really don't have any musical abilities to speak of) I would love to be a rock star! I'm planning on starting guitar lessons soon, so hey who knows!

strandinthewind 02-08-2007 01:14 PM

My job pays the bills and I like the people I work with.

I would have been some vain Broadway legend

estranged4life 02-08-2007 01:27 PM

Mine is being an 'asshole'...Which I have achieved successfully years ago

carrie721 02-08-2007 01:29 PM

my job sucks ass. i'm going back to school in the fall.

i have two totally divergent dream jobs. one is singing. the other is to go into bio/environmental sciences and work in the field, collecting samples, etc. that's what i'm going back to school for.

My job is what it is- not terrible, not wonderful either. But it pays the bills and then some.

If I could turn back time, I would have tried to become an architect.

If I were better looking, I would have been an underwear model. :p

My dream job is to have NO job. Financially secure and able to travel, hobbies, take classes just for fun, or whatever I wanted to do without worrying about funds or anything else.

Yawn - been there done that :D

skcin 02-08-2007 02:13 PM

I'm a nurse. I love my job, but if I were working in a hospital I'd hate it. Not a hospital kind of gal. I make decent money. But I'd make a lot more working in a hospital. I decided years ago that I'd rather have quality time, a life and my sanity that oodles of money.

I don't know what else I'd do. Something where I could work from home or have flexible hours. I've gotten really interested in design & remodeling & decorating, and real estate. Maybe something in that realm.

Dream job? Pro bowler. Do you know how much those guys rake in? for BOWLING?!?! :D

My "modeling years" mostly consisted of sitting in a field with string beans or picking peaches. I wore more than just my undies though. :)

me too! a kept wo/man...yep, that's the life for me.

I hate my job (I'm a paralegal). if I ever get out of the legal profession I will never go back.

other dream jobs:
#1 - entertainer (singer most likely)
personal assistant/shopper
fundraiser/event planner
graphic or interior designer
poet
food taste-tester
English professor
court reporter (although this is kind of in the legal field)

I know there are more...I'll have to think.

Well, as of right now I'm a junior in high school who works as a customer service girl at a grocery store in her spare time, so I can only go up from here (knock on wood).

Realistically, I'm probably going to go into law. I'm planning on a double major in English and Creative Writing (hopefully at Emory) and I'll be on the Pre-Law track as well while I'm there.

Now for the interesting part...my dream job. I really have two fantasies although the first is not so much a job as it is my idea of the perfect life: own a beautiful house on the beach, live as a complete hermit and do nothing but write my entire life.

misanthrope or creative soul...it's your call

The second is the ridiculous idea of being an actress but really, what girl doesn't dream of the glitz and glamor of Hollywood?

xdreamsunwindx 02-08-2007 05:18 PM

I currently do intern-type work for an independent garage/punk label here in Pittsburgh. I shrinkwrap records, CDs, put flyers up for shows, and do a bit of networking here and there, and I do whatever else people need me to do or can't be arsed to do. I've been helping out there for a few years now, and I do like it, but it's really boring after a while. It's very repetitive doing the same task over and over for eight hours, and the fumes from the shrink-wrap machine get me really high. But I only do it a few days a week, and the pay is good, so I can't complain.

I really want to work in music, but not as a musician. Unless you make it big, it doesn't pay the bills, and performing is something I love, and the thought of that as a "job" freaks me out. I'd love to be a music journalist, a photographer, a fashion designer, a cosmetologist, a promoter, or an A&R rep. Something like that. I did consider becoming a psychologist, a lawyer, or a social worker, but I just don't have the right personality.

If I move to a bigger city, like NYC, I want to get into pinup modeling, and gogo dancing, more as a hobby than a job, but you can get paid for that kind of stuff. And it's loads of fun. Someday, I want to start my own record label, run my own venue, and open up a record store. Probably won't happen, but I want to do at least one of those things.

You're pretty much the coolest Pittsburgh girl I know, have I told you that?

michelle2677 02-08-2007 05:54 PM

I'm doing it now. I just finished putting a filling in a guy's front tooth-one that an hour ago it was black along the gumline. I gave him a mirror and he started crying. I started crying. That's what it's all about  that, and a little volunteer work at the animal shelter and my life is complete :)

<333 likewise. Which is why we need to hang out soon.

markolas 02-08-2007 07:41 PM

I'm not real keen on my current job, even though I just got promoted and got a nice little pay increase along with it. But it's not at all what I want to do. I was a graphic design major in college but I didn't finish. I'd like to go back and give that another shot, and hopefully find something where I could work from home, at least part of the time. I have no idea in what capacity I'd want to do graphic design, however. I'm hoping I'll figure that out.

Ultimately, I'd just like to paint and draw all day, or maybe do freelance work when I felt like it. I need to start ratholing (I love that word) money, like now, though. Which I already am, I just need to rathole *more*.

chiliD 02-08-2007 07:51 PM

I hate my job  ...but I'm good at it. After 20 years, I guess you eventually get that way...AND the salary is fairly decent for a government employee.

What I'm still working on is to, once again after 25 years, be a FULL-TIME musician. Which once I reach a point where I can retire (yes, I said "retire") from my current job at a decent pension rate, then focus solely on making music. This "dual life" of having a stressful day job and still trying to keep both feet in the music biz is wreaking havoc on me. The ol' "I'm too old for this ****" is in full swing. Since I have no intention of giving up music, this damn desk job has its days numbered, but unfortunately the "number" is still pretty high.

Of course, all bets are off if I hit the lottery. Look out recording studios and concert tour venues!! My goal is to have an album that out-sells Time and gets twice the airplay.

Well how's Saturday for you? I get off work at 2:30 so anytime after that is fine :D

Peestie 02-08-2007 08:24 PM

Well, I'm studying Applied Mathmatics and Physics at university so apparently that can get me all sorts of jobs, none of which I have any interest in.

What I really want to do is something involved in music. I've started recording songs I've written and I can quite happily spend hours and hours experimenting with studio programs to get exactly the right sound I'm looking for. To me that's completely fascinating and would be what I what I's love to do. I'd settle for being a studio engineer or a producer (if I was good enough) but ideally I'd be a recording artist, doing original songs and handling the production duties mostly by myself, playing most/all the instruments myself probably and touring. Wouldn't care how big I got, just so long as it was able to make ends meet that'd be perfect.

I'd settle for that lol. What sort of stuff do you play/write? Once you get that album released be sure to say so I can get a copy and get you one step closer to Time. :D

Dammit D, you stole mine!!!
I could make a full time job out of overseeing my island, servants and naked babes.

I like my job, although I don't care for two people that I HAVE to work with. I get paid well, but get ZERO respect from the above two people. I've not had a "thank you". Ever.:(
(For those who don't know, I do sound for bands. The bands ALWAYS thank me, but the promotor who hires me, is the one who doles out praise, like Satan doles out icecubes!).

Well, while I was in school, I played in a band(still do). I gradually bought enough PA equipment to go out and do sound for other bands. The month I graduated from IU, I thought I'd give it a whirl, and see how much money I could make doing sound for bands(god forbid I get a REAL job, with my degree! Music was all I was ever really interested in anyway).
It's a good job, if you like being out til 3-4AM, sleeping til 2PM, and drinking all the free alcohol you can swallow!

Now that sounds like my kind of gig haha. It's really too bad that I don't have a single music bone in my body. I'm incredibly jealous of those who do.

sasja 02-08-2007 09:10 PM

I was a Drama Therapist (Freudian/Jungian) -- Mental Health Counseling with children, adolescents and families and in Juvenile Forensics, until I married and embarked on this, what turned out to be, family-building challenge .... (age :( )

Now I am about to become the Stay At Home Mom to TWO sons :D Being a mom is a bigger job than I had ever imagined, but with tons of good parts.

However, when my sons reach the time they don't need me so much any more I want to pursue my dream of having a travelling marionette theater, and visit schools and hospitals and community organizations and perform puppet plays.

I've always made puppets for my hobby and really, REALLY want to take it somewhere, a new level, one day. I think I am done with being a counselor. 15 years was enough.

that sounds fantastically interesting, but very emotionally taxing.
