Download recommendations

Since I'm new to the mp3 player world, I was hoping that people could post recommendations of songs to download. I'm still getting used to being able to get just 1 or 2 tracks by an artist, as opposed to purchasing a whole CD and when I go to search for music, and I find myself staring at the screen trying to think of who & what to search for.

I'm registered at Limewire, I've gotten pretty much everything I was looking for so far. I'd like to discover some new artists and/or older artists' obscure songs - and then if I hate it, I'll just delete it. :D I like a wide range of music, so pretty much anything goes - pop, rock, country, some R&B. I've heard people mention Scissor Sisters, Ryan Adams, the Decemberists, Nico Case to name a few - so gimme the name of a song to check out. If you'd like to post the files too, be my guest.

I have a few suggestions of my own. I'm not at home, so I can't post files right now :sorry: :

"Long Ride Home" "Tony" "Living With Ghosts" "You Never Get What You Want" "Rain" Patty Griffin. I f*cking love her.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Dani Harrison from The Concert For George. I saw this on TV a while back & it blew me away. I was thrilled to find the mp3.

"Where Would You Be" Martina McBride. Her voice just soars on this.

"River" Joni Mitchell. I know it's supposed to be a Christmas song. But it's so sad & beautiful, I'd listen to it all year.

"Ring of Fire" "Hurt" "Jackson" Johnny Cash. Hurt may make you cry.

I might know them? Ryan, do you even know who I am? I don't know anybody. I asked you guys the other day if it was cool to like My Chemical Romance, for God's sake! I'm a lost soul. Well, OK, I know The Killers. But they're all over the place, so who doesn't.

Give me anything remotely cool. Any song you really like.

Since Carrie suggested Jenny Lewis, check out the band she's in, Rilo Kiley. For individual songs, I'd go with It's A Hit, Love and War (11/11/46), and Portions For Foxes. Those are off their latest album.

Hm....you could also check out Panic! At The Disco, although they can come off whiney and obnoxious. Their songs are catchy as hell though.

Song more bands and songs by them (:p)

The Forecast - Every Gun Makes It's Own Tomb

Taking Back Sunday - Cute Without the E (Cut from the Team)

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now

Snow Patrol - Run

The Elected - Fireflies in a Steel Mill

Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead

I could go on forever. If you like some of those, cool. If not I can recommend something in a different direction. :p

skcin 01-08-2007 03:45 PM

^ Cool! Thanks dude.

Anyone have any lesser known tunes by well known artists that they like? Lisa - Cyndi? Dee - Beatles? Carrie - Emmylou? Sparky - Joni?

And hopefully Sharon will pop in with suggestions.

hayley 01-08-2007 03:46 PM

Paula- you should check out Brandi Carlile. She has one album out, self-titled, and an EP. If you like Patty, I think you'd really like her. And Rachael Yamagata. She has also has one album and an EP.

I've heard Rachael's version of River, but that's it. Thanks for the info.

I noticed because to play it on iTunes, I have to enter your password because I'm not authorized to play it! :p I'll just ask my friend to give it to me. :D

P.S. - I'll host some tracks if anyone wants one or is too lazy to use Limewire. :p

I second the motion for Imogen and submit "Headlock," "Goodnight & Go," "Glittering Cloud (The Plague Of Locusts)," "Embers of Love," and "Speeding Cars." For Frou Frou (Imogen's kind-of side-project), "Let Go" and "Breathe In" are safe bets.

I saw Rilo Kiley recommended, so for Rilo Kiley, I'd go for "Portions For Foxes," "Does He Love You?," "Science Vs. Romance," "August," "Paint's Peeling," "So Long," "A Better Son/Daughter," "With Arms Outstretched," Or anything else they've ever done ever because Rilo is love.

Once you've grown to know and love the Rilo, you can move on to Team Rilo. Which would be solo Jenny (Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins)/Blake (The Elected), Tilly & the Wall, etc.

can i third the motion for imi? she is fantastic!! i recommend everything everyone else has listed for her, plus "the moment i said it", "the walk", and on the frou frou front "must be dreaming" plus "shh" and "hear me out".

skcin 01-14-2007 10:53 PM

I've DL'd a few of the suggested tracks. I'm loving Brandi Carlile, I'll def. be seeking out more of her stuff. Jenny Lewis is good too; Emmylou never disappoints. Just found out that Cute is What We Aim For is from Buffalo, so I guess I'll have to like them at least a little bit. :) I was impressed by Neko Case's "Hold On, Hold On," and by Kathleen Edwards "In State." Sufjan Stevens "Chicago" is very unique - liked it a lot.

Panic! is no big deal, from what I've heard so far. Midlake...interesting. Decemberists "The Engine Driver" sounds like Oasis with a chick on harmony - not sure if that's good or bad yet.

Joanna Newsom's "This Side of Blue" is both beautiful and bizarre. Not sure how I feel about that one - at first I thought "wth is this crap?" but now I feel myself wanting to listen to it again. I think I heard another one of her tunes on TV the other night (Grey's? Ghost Whisperer?), but I forgot to check the credits. Johan's "She's Got a Way With Men" sounds retro, yet current.

BTW - anyone have any suggestions for good headphones? I hate earbuds. To be honest, I'm not that concerned about sound quality - I need something that I can wear while I'm jogging/working out that won't keep falling off/down.

goldustsongbird 01-14-2007 11:02 PM

^ Joanna Newsom is an acquired taste. I liked her first album, esp. Inflammatory Writ... I haven't heard any of her new stuff, tho. She's interesting.

I just realized I hadn't sent you any Cyndi stuff! :o So, you're looking for like, upbeat stuff, right? You know I'm gonna send you 100 songs. lol.

carrie721 01-14-2007 11:26 PM

glad you liked neko, brandi, emmylou, etc., paula. for headphones - i got the kind that are like ear buds, but they go over your ears too. that's a terrible description, sorry. but i got them from target for $10. they never fall off and i like them more than regular headphones.

It's OK, it's not your fault you're forgetful and irresponsible - you're Canadian! :wavey:

Anyway, it doesn't have to be upbeat. The more well-known tunes of Cyn's that I like are Change of Heart (#1 all time,) All Through the Night, I Drove All Night (her version of this tune is so hot), Money Changes, Shine...not that that will help you narrow it down or anything. Send me whatever you feel like, I won't turn it down.

I was thinking about those - but what about when I'm jogging on the beach in skimpy clothing (like I so often do here....) I don't think you can wear sunglasses with those, can you?
