Lindsey Survivor?

Saw this:
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showth...light=survivor
- and wondered if anyone'd be up for another one? I guess it would be the four studio albums (maybe even add in his SWY stuff as a GOS substitute lol :p ) plus non-album tracks. Then a big one with all 5 winners.

I've never been around for one of these, so I don't know if people are sick of them or not  . If people are then :sorry: !

So, anyone?

LINDSEY#1FAN 01-05-2007 04:29 PM

Pull 'em back!

And lets not call them "arguments", let's call them "spirited debates, where, once or twice, people might be killed just to prove a point" :p

I'm up for it, I'd even like to suggest doing the survivor in the style of March Macness that Rezamatic once did on the Rumours board:

http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=18650

http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=18663

Just randomize all his solo tracks (leaving out the instrumental intros on OOTC of course) and put them against each other like in the Stage 2 of the FIFA World Cup. A nice change from the usual survivor format.

I was thinking of something like that (just every single track bundled up actually lol), but the general format seemed to be just album against album so I thought I'd stick with that. I'm happy to do it any way, but I'm not really sure how to go about setting the whole thing up . Couldn't be that hard though. I'll try post a list later today of all his solo songs that we can include and then someone else can fill in the ones I miss :p

For GOS will we put it in and remove DOR, TTFTS and SGCYM since they're on UTS? Or are we ignoring GOS all together (I hope not!)?

More issues to be solved: should the Buckingham Nicks songs be included too?

And Play In The Rain in one or two parts? These questions boggle the mind.

I'm up to 63 tracks so far writng out the list. I thought the exact same things! At the minute PITR is in 2 parts still, but I'm inclined to make it one. What about This Nearly Was Mine? Gerald and me would probably prefer PITR in one part (but then that's OUR opinion). And I'd love This Nearly Was Mine to be in there too.

If you left that out then there's no reason to keep the GOS songs that made SYW in either, since those were technically released as FM songs.

I think the whole GOS section should also include the outtakes that weren't in the tracklisting that Lindsey submitted in 2001. Like this:

She Smiled Sweetly
Gotta Get Away
Shuffle Riff
Gift Of Screws
Twist Of Fate
The Singer Not The Song
Blue Turns To Grey
Deep Dense
Given Thing
Steve's Riff (Wear You Down)

Also, if Twisted is in there, then why not the Buckingham Nicks tracks too?

As for the rest, I Want You Back by Mick Fleetwood's Zoo could be in there too, it sounds like a Lindsey solo track anyway and it's never been in any survivor. And just for fun, we could include Lindsey's version of Here Comes The Sun and stand back and watch the fireworks.

If we get the total number of tracks to 64 we can do it World Cup style.

shackin'up 01-06-2007 09:19 AM

I second every word of Gaius' post. His question of the BN-tracks and Twister is valid, and as I'm concerned, easily answered. Leave them out.

Step back and watch the fireworks? You'll have to get in to be a sparkplug.

And yes, Play in the rain is ONE track. Just like Oh well is.

I'd like it in one part as well. So that can change, and TNWM can go in.

I only left it out since we already had one version of Go Insane and it was live.

Might I ask how Play in the Rain parts I and II are considered the same song? Different tracks, different album sides, and completely musically different from each other. I think if anybody prefers one over the other, and most probably do, they cannot possibly be treated as one.

I was kidding. ;) I'm not a Chiffonhead, and if I am, then I'm as much a Buckhead as I'm a Chiffon one. The selection of songs is perfectly fine with me.

Yeah, I know there's people who, for instance, prefer part II over part I.

I see this as a question of formats - had there been a CD issue of Go Insane in 1984 then Lindsey would've probably put Play In The Rain there as a single track, like it's been done with the CD reissues. On vinyl because of the change of sides he wanted to split the whole thing in two parts instead of putting it all on side A or B, probably because the other side would've been a bit too short then.

I do think of Play In The Rain as one piece because on vinyl side B picks off from where side A left us, that poing-poing-poing sitar manipulation or whatever it is. I remember that Jethro Tull did a similar thing with their Thick As A Brick album which only has one piece on it - Side A fades out with a certain theme that is faded in right at the beginning of side B. People think of it as a single piece even though it says "Part 1" and "Part 2" on the vinyl labels.

Actually on my vinyl label of Go Insane it says "Play In The Rain (Continued)" on side B, not "part 2". That's my reasoning for treating it as a single piece. But if people disagree with that then we might split it in two for the survivor/knockout.

Please, Gaius, you are completely correct in the play in the rain-case. We had this discussion in the Go Insane-survivor, and we lost it. This time we'll focus on it as one track, it's meant as one also. It's an entity and Peestie, I really like to see this gem intact, instead of butchering it as different songs. On my CD, Go insane has 8 tracks and number 5 is called Play in the Rain (6:56)

Thick As A Brick! Awesome album! One 40-45 minute song, but because of vinyl it was split into 2 halves. Didn't they do they same on Oh Well when it was originally released? I thought I remembered reading it was split over the 2 sides of an LP, and I'd say it's all one song.

If it's meant as one then he could have easily switched one other song and had it as one track on either side of the album. Or if nothing else, made it into one track on the cd release.

And aren't you the one who goes on and on about the "entity" of Under The Skin? If you rave about a whole album being one entity, how come it's so terrible for these two tracks to be one entity? I don't see you pushing for the Under The Skin songs to be treated as one. ;)

Forget the nonsense about the cd issue that I wrote above. I did do some research and found out that there are different cd issues of Go Insane. I guess the American one from 1991 (and the one that probably existed before that) had Play In The Rain as two separate tracks. However, at least in Europe they combined it into one track at one point, Gerald wrote somewhere in one of the Go Insane survivor threads that he has a 1984 cd issue from Germany that does exactly that.

Anyway, I think that since "Play In The Rain (continued)" picks up right from where "Play In The Rain" on side A of GI left off, it can all be perfectly seen as one piece. I also think there's a subtle difference between "part II" and "continued". "You And I Part I" and "You And I Part II" are clearly different pieces, but "PITR" and "PITR (continued)" are not.

One might think that splitting a track on two sides of vinyl and then asking it to be treated as one piece is weird, unusual and bizarre? Nah, it all sounds just like typical Lindsey Buckingham to me!

Hey, I was supposed to be the one who would first take the piss out of Gerald because he always speaks of Lindsey's albums like they were Beethoven's symphonies! ;)

trackaghost 01-06-2007 05:40 PM

I don't see any problem why Play In The Rain shouldn't be treated as one track. I think the "Continued" point is a good one.

Except for Out Of The Cradle, I'd piss on any of Ludwig's symphonies to turn them in for L&O, GI, GOS or UTS.

About the raving about entities, I must say that it is sometimes abitch to be a nonnative speaker. My vocabulary doesn't reach far enough to make a difference between the entityness of UTS and the fact that one song split in two still is one song. An apple cut in half is still one apple. Hell, that even goes for a pear.

And aren't you the one who goes on and on about the "entity" of Under The Skin? If you rave about a whole album being one entity, how come it's so terrible for these two tracks to be one entity? I don't see you pushing for the Under The Skin songs to be treated as one. ;)

Thanks Little Nicki, you put the atmosphere right on track for this survivor. I love statements.
